The reason I returned back to school was for personal and professional reasons, with the intensions of gaining the knowledge and skills to be a successful educator.
I’ve wasted enough time, been at a standstill with my career for a long time, it was time for a major change. I decided to go back to school for not only myself, but my son as well. I got sick of living paycheck to paycheck barely making ends meet. Not being able to provide for my son was very frustrating. He’s at the age now to where I didn’t want him to see his mother struggling. It hurts to tell your child that you can’t get this now or you have to wait till my next pay.
I’m 35 years old with goals that I feel I should have accomplished already, but have not. My family and friends has contributed to me wanting to further my education. I look at them in see great accomplishment and fulfillment in their eye. That’s what I want for myself.
As a parent and educator it’s important that I’m always learning so I can give my son and students the very best of me. In during this they will wreak the rewards and benefits that I didn’t have as a child growing up. We as parents are always telling our children that education is the key to great success in that you can accomplish or conquer the world with hard work and dedication.
Noting having my degree determined how far I would go in my career and determined my pay scale as well. I applied for a position received a letter by mail stating that although you have the experience, we decided to go with someone more qualified. That means someone with a college education and a degree. Receiving this letter was a reality check for me I was so disappointed with myself because this was the perfect job for me. In I let it slip right though my fingers all because I didn’t have that college degree.
Going for my college degree has always been a personal goal of mines....

Changing Our Lives Essay

...Assignment 2 Changing Our Lives Essay changing our lives essays Alicia Carter Instructor: LaRuth Ensley ENG 090 10-22-2012 Changing Our Lives Essay We all want success, money, and happiness right? Would a college education not be the key to having all of those things? Returning to school now would ensure that I could have money, with a successful job and happiness in the gratification of completing my degree, all the while, setting a stellar example for my daughter, making my family proud and allowing me the opportunity to obtain a college degree. All of this is essential positive things to add to this journey called life. I was once the young high school graduate with bright eyes and a promising future going to college. I enrolled in a large local University and started my journey to arming myself with the necessary tools to have a stellar career. After the initial shock of freedom and adulthood, two years later, I found myself socially at the top of my game, but educationally the dean had placed me the former 3.8 high school student on academic probation. I was now struggling to make the grade in college. I now know that I was not focused, or driven, my priorities were not intact and the entire long-term goal to me was just a fleeting futuristic challenge. The importance of college had not set in and therefore it appeared I was paying to go to school to become a better social butterfly. My parents did not seem to find the importance of that......

Why Wgu

...Why? Prepared by Eric Norwood They say that sometimes good things come to those that wait and great things come to those that work. I once heard this myth that I find fascinating; as we get older we get wiser. No matter what the age, I think that getting and education is a wise decision. For many reasons, including an unstable economy, people over 40 are returning back to college campuses. Being a Senior Admissions Advisor at a Career College, I have had the privilege of witnessing this on a daily basis. As a 40 year old myself, I too have decided to return to college. That’s right I am going back to school. It is never too late to finish what you started. Why I chose to go back to school? I would be shocked if my reasons were not the same as most people. I could probably think of many reasons why I decided to go back to school. In this essay, I will share a few reasons. One personal reason is to finish what I started. In June 1996, I graduated with a B.S. in Sociology at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.  In September 1996, I entered into graduate school for M.A. in Sociology, specializing in Industrial Relation.  I completed two years of studies, including an internship at United States Postal Service (USPS).  Following that, I got hired for the USPS, and quickly promoted through the ranks to the Office of Inspector General.  I spent the next 12 years working as an Internal Auditor for the government.  Life got in front of me, had an auditing......

Going Back to School

...Why I decided to go back to school I would honestly have to say that my decision of going back to school has to be the most adult decision I have made. So many pros and cons were involved in this decision. Although going back to school can certainly be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, it is not a decision that I could make selfishly. A solid support structure is one of the keys to seceding in this journey. I needed to know that my fiance was willing and able to support me in the decision I made. I also needed my family’s support to know that the decision I made was the right one. A huge advantage of returning to school at an older age is that I will appreciate learning in a way that was not possible before. This life experience will give me a perspective of what life is really about. I fell like this time around I will enjoy learning and my grades will be reflective of this.   I needed to complete what I set out to do when I was younger. That is why I decided to finish school and actually finish something I have started. My parents also had a big part in my decision. I know that they worked really hard for us to go to school. I know that they will be very proud to see any of us finish school and show for it. Another big denominator in my decision was how now a days you are only worth anything if you have a degree. My decision was made because I want to make something out of myself, and I know that I am capable of doing it. I don’t want to have a......

Academic Success

...Continuing Academic Success Essay John Smith GEN 201 Continuing Academic Success Essay Even though you're scared of academic failure, make sure you know yourself because knowing what your goals are and how to accomplish them and to know what resources are available will help you succeed. Going back to school can be terrifying, especially after being out school for so long. You, like myself, are probably telling yourself that you can’t do it. You haven’t been in school in so long; things have changed so much. We all hate the thought of failure; the truth is you won’t know until you try. There are things you can do to help yourself prepare for returning to school, and I’m going to go over some that I have learned along the way. The most important thing you need to know when returning to school is yourself. You can’t be successful if you don’t know your strengths and weaknesses. By taking a look at yourself, you can get a grasp on what areas of learning you might struggle with and what part of learning should come easy. There are many factors that can influence how we learn. These factors can include your behavioral characteristics, how much life experience you have, which of your senses are most predominant and whether or not you are self-directed in your learning (Reuter, 2000). For instance, I know that I need to be shown a few times, then I need just to dive in and try it myself. If I don’t get that hands on experience, all the telling me in the world......

Me Talk Pretty One Day

...Me talk pretty one day “Me Talk Pretty One Day” is an essay written by David Sedaris in the year of 2005. David Sedaris is an American Grammy Award-nominated humourist, comedian, author, and radio contributor. The theme of the essay is the attitude to learning a foreign language. It is an expository text about the writer’s personal experiences. In his essay, David Sedaris writes about his experiences on learning French at an international school in Paris. With a language course that endured for only one month as the only previous experience, the 41-year old writer moves to Paris to learn the language. The essay is about his experiences at the school and with his very strict French teacher. This strict teacher tears David Sedaris down and takes all courage and self-esteem out of him because he, along with all his new classmates, can’t speak fluent French. He becomes frightened of saying something wrong, so he decides to stop doing things that requires speaking, such as going to the bank, asking directions and ordering coffee or food. He is closed off from the society. The tone in the text is informal and casual, which is supported by the way the subject has been tackled: David Sedaris shares his personal experiences. The text is focused on his personality from the very beginning: page 1, line 1 “At the age of forty one, I am returning to school…”. The personal style of writing characterizes the essay genre. The essay is written in colloquial language and the chosen......

Essay on "Me Talk Pretty One Day"

...Essay on ”me talk pretty one day” The essay “me talk pretty one day” is an essay written by David Sedaris and published in 2005. It is a expository text about David’s, the author’s, own experiences with learning French in a foreign country and the essay deals with themes such as the attitude towards leaning a foreign language but also that you have to understand the language, before you can speak it. In the essay, the writer David Sedaris shares his experiences with learning French at an international school in France. His first encounter with the strict and yet quite sarcastic French teacher tears down his walls of self-esteem and belief in himself throughout most of the time he spends in the class, because he and his other classmates can not speak the language fluently. In time he becomes more and more frightened that he might say something wrong and he even stop taking any contact with people because he dread anything that requires speaking the language. The students in the class are not fluent in French either and their halting sentences sound like “Sometimes me cry alone at night” (p.8, line 109) and “[…] someday you talk pretty” (p.8 line 109-110.) The author understands his fellow students, although they do not speak fluent French, but when his French teacher talks in class he does not understand half of what she is saying, for instance: “Even a fiuscreza ticiwelmun knows that a typewriter is feminine” – (p.7, line 71-71) This tells us exactly how the......

You Have to Earn It

...Exit Essay In today’s world you will find that the old as well as the young want to get something for little or no work. People love to get a “free” anything. We love to get free coupons, free movie tickets, free food and the list goes on and on. Sometimes students want an “A” for doing absolutely nothing in class. The truth of the matter is everything in life is not free; you have to earn diplomas, degrees, wages, etc. As a student in the Sullivan Alternative Program, I have been productive in class each day, dressed appropriately, and maintained a calm and cooperative attitude in order to complete my term at the Sullivan center and return to J. L. Mann High School. First of all, I have been productive in class each day. I have remembered that school is for education and I have put forth my best effort to succeed in life. I set my alarm clock and I got up early every morning and made it to school on time. I was in my assigned seat and ready to go to work. I came to class prepared with the necessary materials. I had my pencil, pens, paper and books. My pencil was sharpened before each class started. I kept up with my syllabus and scheduled work daily. For each class I dressed appropriately. I dressed according to the school rules. I have not sagged my pants. I have not worn pants that have elastic at the band. I have not worn clothes with offensive sayings printed on them. When I wore a hat or a cap I removed it when I entered the building. I understood that the dress......

On Writing

...Ashley Eller December 12, 2011 UCWR110-022 Final Reflective Essay On Writing My favorite author and literary genius, Stephen King, in his memoir On Writing wrote, “Write with the door closed, rewrite with the door open.” This is possibly the best piece of advice I could ever think to give to a struggling student with a paper to write. Your first draft is always for yourself and your own personal reflection. In your second draft, “open up the doors” and write for everyone else who will be reading it. Without this solid piece of advice, I don’t think I could have ever expanded on my writing at all. Over the years, my writing career has hit its peak in junior year, and I have plateaued from there. Since being a UCWR student, I have had the chance to expand my range in my writing skills. From this course, I have learned to expand my writing ability to subjects I would never have broached before, allowing myself to heighten my awareness of the world around me as well as hinder my procrastination. In the beginning of the year, I was very disappointed I would have to take this course. From my previous experience with accelerated English and rhetoric courses, I felt I would be bored and disappointed with the classroom experience. Over the course of the semester, I have learned I was wrong. While in the beginning my engagement level was poor, I was still interested by the current events brought up in class. Some of the biggest topics we discussed (Occupy Wallstreet, Penn State...

Joan Didion's on Going Home- Analysis Essay Revised

...The Most Expensive Home The door thuds as you close it behind you on your way out to go to school, work, or wherever you are headed. You don’t have a second thought about what you’re leaving behind: your home. But have you ever thought about the significance of that word, “home”? In Joan Didion’s essay, “On Going Home”, Didion describes her experiences and thoughts on what defines her meaning of home. Didion uses many asyndetons and polysyndetons to emphasize her emotions and poses several rhetorical questions. Throughout the essay, it can be concluded that perhaps the generation that truly knows the meaning behind the word “home” is gradually disappearing. The contributing factors to such interpretation derived from Didion’s personal experiences with her direct family, her husband, and even her own daughter. Didion first sets her definition of home by clarifying that to her, home means “not where [her] husband and [she] and the baby live, but the place where [her] family is”. Her diction reflects the way she thinks about her home, with words such as “troublesome” that give off a negative connotation. Although she defines this place as her home, she expresses how she changes personalities and formalities in front of her parents and brother, which her husband is unfamiliar with. This transformation represents her familiarity with her family, whom she grew up with, or her childhood, and a vague description of what makes up her home. However, since she is not in her......

Jobs and employees are essential buffers for uncertainties in organizations to their environment. But for it to be effective, a good fit between both employee and the job is necessary so as to have a competent and dynamic workforce. Therefore, the purpose of this essay analyses on a Human Resource (HR) perspective what is competency, the importance of competencies in the current workforce and its tandem relationship to staff undertaking international assignment. Importance of Competency in workforce Mcshane, Olekalns & Travaglione (2010) mentioned that information technology and transport systems enhanced the effects of globalization by bringing connectivity and interdependence between countries around the globe to a whole new level. Therefore, in order to meet the competitiveness of the environment, recognizing core competencies needed by the organizations in its employees is essential as it promotes customer value on the external aspect and allows creation of new business through innovation on the internal aspect (Nankervis et al 2011).
