When I talk about my returning back to school three things come to mind. The first thing I need to do is gain all the knowledge that I need to further my career in the field of Psychology with a concentration on chemical health. For years, I have been unable as a program assistant or case manager to help the clients that I've served. My lack of education and not having a license to counsel I has limited me. Secondly, I have a need at this point in my life to redefine who I am as a person who cares about people in and outside of my present life. I am tired of being a victim of my circumstances which I feel makes me feel less than the person that I want to be in life. …show more content…

All of this is essential positive things to add to this journey called life. I was once the young high school graduate with bright eyes and a promising future going to college. I enrolled in a large local University and started my journey to arming myself with the necessary tools to have a stellar career. After the initial shock of freedom and adulthood, two years later, I found myself socially at the top of my game, but educationally the dean had placed me the former 3.8 high school student on academic probation. I was now struggling to make the grade in college. I now know that I was not focused, or driven, my priorities were not intact and the entire long-term goal to me was just a fleeting futuristic challenge. The importance of college had not set in and therefore it appeared I was paying to go to school to become a better social butterfly. My parents did not seem to find the importance of that concept...

Why Wgu

...Why? Prepared by Eric Norwood They say that sometimes good things come to those that wait and great things come to those that work. I once heard this myth that I find fascinating; as we get older we get wiser. No matter what the age, I think that getting and education is a wise decision. For many reasons, including an unstable economy, people over 40 are returning back to college campuses. Being a Senior Admissions Advisor at a Career College, I have had the privilege of witnessing this on a daily basis. As a 40 year old myself, I too have decided to return to college. That’s right I am going back to school. It is never too late to finish what you started. Why I chose to go back to school? I would be shocked if my reasons were not the same as most people. I could probably think of many reasons why I decided to go back to school. In this essay, I will share a few reasons. One personal reason is to finish what I started. In June 1996, I graduated with a B.S. in Sociology at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.  In September 1996, I entered into graduate school for M.A. in Sociology, specializing in Industrial Relation.  I completed two years of studies, including an internship at United States Postal Service (USPS).  Following that, I got hired for the USPS, and quickly promoted through the ranks to the Office of Inspector General.  I spent the next 12 years working as an Internal Auditor for the government.  Life got in front of me, had an auditing career...

Going Back to School

...Why I decided to go back to school I would honestly have to say that my decision of going back to school has to be the most adult decision I have made. So many pros and cons were involved in this decision. Although going back to school can certainly be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, it is not a decision that I could make selfishly. A solid support structure is one of the keys to seceding in this journey. I needed to know that my fiance was willing and able to support me in the decision I made. I also needed my family’s support to know that the decision I made was the right one. A huge advantage of returning to school at an older age is that I will appreciate learning in a way that was not possible before. This life experience will give me a perspective of what life is really about. I fell like this time around I will enjoy learning and my grades will be reflective of this.   I needed to complete what I set out to do when I was younger. That is why I decided to finish school and actually finish something I have started. My parents also had a big part in my decision. I know that they worked really hard for us to go to school. I know that they will be very proud to see any of us finish school and show for it. Another big denominator in my decision was how now a days you are only worth anything if you have a degree. My decision was made because I want to make something out of myself, and I know that I am capable of doing it. I don’t want to have a regular...

Academic Success

...Continuing Academic Success Essay John Smith GEN 201 Continuing Academic Success Essay Even though you're scared of academic failure, make sure you know yourself because knowing what your goals are and how to accomplish them and to know what resources are available will help you succeed. Going back to school can be terrifying, especially after being out school for so long. You, like myself, are probably telling yourself that you can’t do it. You haven’t been in school in so long; things have changed so much. We all hate the thought of failure; the truth is you won’t know until you try. There are things you can do to help yourself prepare for returning to school, and I’m going to go over some that I have learned along the way. The most important thing you need to know when returning to school is yourself. You can’t be successful if you don’t know your strengths and weaknesses. By taking a look at yourself, you can get a grasp on what areas of learning you might struggle with and what part of learning should come easy. There are many factors that can influence how we learn. These factors can include your behavioral characteristics, how much life experience you have, which of your senses are most predominant and whether or not you are self-directed in your learning (Reuter, 2000). For instance, I know that I need to be shown a few times, then I need just to dive in and try it myself. If I don’t get that hands on experience, all the telling me in the world doesn’t...

Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers: The Story Of Success

...April drew in another deep breath and began to scroll through the empty pages of her application essay. Exhaling once more, she opened the novel, Outliers: The Story Of Success, and flipped through the pages while searching for nothing specific. Malcolm Gladwell wrote on page 79 that, “To get into and succeed in a reasonably competitive graduate program, meanwhile, you probably need an IQ of at least 115.” This concept awakened a thought, hidden until now, that transported her six years back to Manchester Middle, New Hampshire. Her teacher, while not a particularly kind woman, was returning the sixth graders’ essays with a smile and a positive comment for each student. Overall, the class had done marvelous, with the exception of the continuously...

Personal Narrative

...I spent 6 weeks out of school and even upon returning, I felt no better. I continued to panic over essays and cry during presentations until the end of the year. But by early June, I had settled on a medication that actually worked and made new friends with whom I felt comfortable. I stayed in contact with people I had met while I was out of school and began to date the boy who made me want to drop out of English in the first place. I became closer with the smart boy from my class as well, and bonded with him over a love for Star Wars, rap music, and coding jokes. I began to write with confidence and humor, reclaiming ownership of my own voice. I wrote about topics I was interested in. Writing about Luke Skywalker “[taking] off Anakin’s helmet to reveal a disfigured, dying man, struggling to breathe and riddled with cuts and gashes” gave me the opportunity to look back on a trilogy that dominated my childhood and transfer the details into writing. I looked back on my dark past in a humorous light, describing how “each morning, I straightened my hair and put on my eyeliner while listening to music with far too many angry guitarists and screaming vocalists”. In my Afghanistan paper, I had no problem admitting that my interest in the...

Me Talk Pretty One Day

...Me talk pretty one day “Me Talk Pretty One Day” is an essay written by David Sedaris in the year of 2005. David Sedaris is an American Grammy Award-nominated humourist, comedian, author, and radio contributor. The theme of the essay is the attitude to learning a foreign language. It is an expository text about the writer’s personal experiences. In his essay, David Sedaris writes about his experiences on learning French at an international school in Paris. With a language course that endured for only one month as the only previous experience, the 41-year old writer moves to Paris to learn the language. The essay is about his experiences at the school and with his very strict French teacher. This strict teacher tears David Sedaris down and takes all courage and self-esteem out of him because he, along with all his new classmates, can’t speak fluent French. He becomes frightened of saying something wrong, so he decides to stop doing things that requires speaking, such as going to the bank, asking directions and ordering coffee or food. He is closed off from the society. The tone in the text is informal and casual, which is supported by the way the subject has been tackled: David Sedaris shares his personal experiences. The text is focused on his personality from the very beginning: page 1, line 1 “At the age of forty one, I am returning to school…”. The personal style of writing characterizes the essay genre. The essay is written in colloquial language and the chosen vocabulary...

...Scoop, Residential Schools and so forth where Indigenous people are forced to leave their reserves for circumstances that are beyond their control. Raven Sinclair states that, “the Sixties Scoop describes a period in Aboriginal history in Canada in which thousands of Aboriginal children were removed from birth families and placed in non-Aboriginal environments” (65). The Sixties Scoop was an event that affected many Aboriginal people across Canada, including Garnet in Keeper’n Me. At a young age, Garnet Raven was removed from his home on a reserve and placed in multiple foster homes, which causes him to lose a sense of who he is. The Sixties Scoop was the reason why Garnet did not have the connections to home that he now needs to work towards. In Richard Wagamese’s Keeper’n Me, the notion of home is shown through the way the protagonist Garnet finds himself by...

Essay on "Me Talk Pretty One Day"

...Essay on ”me talk pretty one day” The essay “me talk pretty one day” is an essay written by David Sedaris and published in 2005. It is a expository text about David’s, the author’s, own experiences with learning French in a foreign country and the essay deals with themes such as the attitude towards leaning a foreign language but also that you have to understand the language, before you can speak it. In the essay, the writer David Sedaris shares his experiences with learning French at an international school in France. His first encounter with the strict and yet quite sarcastic French teacher tears down his walls of self-esteem and belief in himself throughout most of the time he spends in the class, because he and his other classmates can not speak the language fluently. In time he becomes more and more frightened that he might say something wrong and he even stop taking any contact with people because he dread anything that requires speaking the language. The students in the class are not fluent in French either and their halting sentences sound like “Sometimes me cry alone at night” (p.8, line 109) and “[…] someday you talk pretty” (p.8 line 109-110.) The author understands his fellow students, although they do not speak fluent French, but when his French teacher talks in class he does not understand half of what she is saying, for instance: “Even a fiuscreza ticiwelmun knows that a typewriter is feminine” – (p.7, line 71-71) This tells us exactly how the students...
