William felt Reverend Flowers bristle, and heard him suck at his teeth. “What’s wrong?” William asked. “Calling the Lord kind always concerns me; the Lord may be just, but that is far different than kind. I’ve never found an ounce of kindness in the true Lord.” William contemplated Revered Flowers words as they walked the rest of the way to the cider mill in silence. The guests took a break from swimming to sing happy birthday to Susan and Catherine. The crowd around the table parted for William as a chorus of Happy Birthday to You began. William placed the cake in front of the twins. The twins stared at two flickering candles in the shape of the number five. The song ended with an out-of-tune tooooo youuuuu…. The twins stared up at William. “Go ahead, girls. Blow out the candles,” William said. The girls leaned forward and began blowing on the candles. After several huffs, the flames went out in a puff of black smoke. The guests offered a gentle round of applause. Mary leaned forward, cut two enormous slices from the sheet cake, and set the slices in front of Susan and Catherine. The girls looked up at Mary and waited patiently. “Go ahead,” Mary said. The twins dug into the cake with both hands. Mary cut a third giant slice of cake and set it in front of James. James plunged a fork into the yellow cake, and shoved a gigantic forkful into his mouth. Mary began cutting smaller pieces and handing them out to the partygoers.
