...Whedon's slick blockbuster "The Avengers" presents what may be the ultimate team: half a dozen Marvel Comics superheroes for the price of one. You don't need me to tell you it's the culmination of a five-year plan that began with Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury taking Tony Stark aside at the end of the first "Iron Man" to tip him off as to the "Avengers Initative." There is a bigger picture, he told him -- and here it is: The be-all but not (they're hoping) the end-all of the current craze for CGI-enhanced superheroics. Interspersing flip one-liners with a host of larger-than-life characters and the usual flurry of fight-and-flight scenes, the film is never less than amusing. Still, it's never more than amusing either. Marvel Studios has made it a point of pride to diverge from the grim severity popularized in the DC / Warner Bros Batman films. The lightness is fun but it doesn't offer much of a foundation on which to build an epic. And let's face it, there's more than a whiff of opportunism about a project that pits a defrosted World War II hero, Captain America (Chris Evans), an inventor-industrialist, Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), the pagan lightning god, Thor (Chris Hemsworth), a scientist with anger-management issues, Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and SHIELD agents Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) against the Norse god of mischief, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and a legion of marauding aliens. In 3-D. Meet the boss of 'The Avengers' Chris Hemsworth is 'Thor' ...

...different movie posters of the same genre and look for common themes and elements between them and decipher the meanings and purpose. Methodology To find examples of movie posters I began my research by using google to search for images of known action movies. The first search was for the Expendables 2 poster. When looking at the results I saw that one poster was more frequent than the others and had a movie release date. I then cross-checked that movie poster with trusted sites such as imdb.com or fandango.com. These websites have credibility because they have expansive archives of movies and all submissions to the website are reviewed by professionals before being posted. The second poster I google searched was for the Avengers. With the Avengers I used the same process as the...

...Shakespeare’s Hamlet is a classic story of revenge. The theme of revenge is evidenced many times throughout the play. While revenge is a central theme, many critics would agree that the story is more of a character study of the namesake protagonist than a simple revenge tale. The character is more complicated than the theme in itself. The Prince Hamlet is an actor pushed into the role of a reluctant, conflicted, and indecisive avenger. He is an actor who sees himself as such, and cannot take action. “The form, structure and incidental features of revenge are clearly present: the offense which demands vengeance, the avenger, the violent confrontation, the destruction of the guilty” (Austen 1). “Involved a ghost of a murder victim who clamored for revenge and a hero who was prepared to avenge the ghost’s death” (Bell,1). Yet Hamlet is an actor and an intellectual. Two character traits that are obstacles to his bound mission of revenge. Austen states, “Hamlet is a tragic hero who knows that action is required of him, but his purpose is blunted by an inability to act. He is a frustrated actor, whose conception of action does not translate itself into deeds” (1). He also writes, “Urged on by the Ghost of his father, Hamlet at first appears to be resolute: 'thy commandment all alone shall live I Within the book and volume of my brain' (I.v.102-3). Yet even this allusion to books makes us question his resolve, for he has only just vowed to 'wipe away all trivial fond records...

...Mumbai, Dec 22 (IANS) Aamir Khan, whose "PK" has opened to rave reviews and roaring box office success, says he chooses a film on the basis of the script and not box office prospects. "PK", which came out Friday, has managed to gross Rs.95.21 crore in three days. When asked if it is true that he chooses films on the basis of box office prospects, Aamir said: "It's a very unfortunate trend because the moment creative people start thinking about numbers, then the shadow of the numbers influences the kind of film they choose and pick." If the team of Aamir, director Rajkumar Hirani and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra created history with "3 Idiots" in 2009, the trio have repeated the same success with "PK", a film that boasts of a unique concept. It uses an alien to talk about the ills of society and not only makes viewers laugh and cry but also makes them think. "The moment I start choosing films that can do Rs.100 crore business, then my choice becomes very limited and I can only do films like 'Avengers' or 'Spider-Man', which go on to achieve those numbers. This really kills creativity to an alarming extent, so I have always selected my films based on what I feel towards them," he said. "Like 'Taare Zameen Par' went on to do good business and I didn't know it would. I just did it because I liked the script. Also, I selected 'Rang De Basanti' because I loved the script. I did 'Lagaan' when the entire film industry thought it was a disaster. "So these films I have not picked looking...

...Running head: WEEK THREE INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT 1 Popular Literature Paper SOC/105 October 10 2012 WEEK THREE INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT 2 The following paper will describe to the reader a brief overview, followed by a little bit about the author, and then explain how this type of popular fiction fits with other literature in the same genre. Comic books of yesterday and today have introduced a lot of new and interesting characters. The character that I selected to right about is the Incredible Hulk. The Incredible Hulk was introduced to the world in a comic book back in 1962. This character, Bruce Banner, was a scientist that was working with atomic weapons when an atomic bomb went off and exposed him to an enormous amount of gamma radiation. When he was exposed to the radiation, it turned him into a savage and extremely strong animal of a human being. Normally when Mr. Banner becomes enraged the Incredible Hulk is exposed and only when the Incredible Hulk calms down does he turn back into Bruce Banner. Although the Hulk's color has varied just a bit over the time that he has existed, the majority of the time he is the favorable and most popular green color. Whenever Bruce Banner turns into the Incredible Hulk, he is then capable of immense strength, minus the brains. Strong emotions such as anger, terror and grief are also triggers for...

Haller’s article adds on to Shapiro’s claim since the “supercrip” stereotype not only sets standards for the disabled community but also conceals the real problem in society; the discrimination and unfair treatment of the disabled community. Haller’s article can be limiting due to the influence of her personal viewpoint, since she can choose what advertisements to utilizes as support. Harnett, Allison. “Escaping the 'Evil Avenger' and the 'Supercrip': Images of Disability in Popular Television”. Irish Communications Review. 8(2000): 21-29. Print. The article “Escaping the 'Evil Avenger' and the 'Supercrip': Images of Disability in Popular Television” by Allison Harnett, illustrates the inaccurate images of people with disabilities in fictional film and television. Harnett claims the media’s portrayal of persons with disabilities is inaccurate and unfair. In films, Harnett states persons with disabilities are “oversimplified” and not used for their “complexity as people” but for their “identifiable impairment” for “dramatic effect, emotional appeal or blatant symbolism” in films.(Harnett, 21). The media utilizes disability as a technique for films to captivate the audience. The media delights the audience through the use of inaccurate images...

...Instagram were like "This movie is perfection" or "Everyone who hates this movie is stupid and wouldn't understand the dark theme because they only like light-hearted Marvel movies". What exactly was wrong with this movie? Everything. I mean the fight scenes were pretty cool, but that's about it. It was just an overall mess. The story jumped around everywhere and couldn't focus on anything. Let's start with the first thing wrong, the title. It shouldn't even be called Batman V Superman as that's not even the main conflict of the movie. It should just plainly and simply be called "Dawn of Justice". Batman barely fought Superman and if you think that those 10 minutes of them fighting is worth the title of the movie, think about this: in the Avengers, Iron Man and Thor fought at the beginning but you don't see the movie being called "Iron Man V...

...Introduction: Even before a child is born they are being socialized; socialization of the boy or girl starts from the parents and people around them buying gender specific items. Children’s clothing and toys play a large role in socialization and with the all the stereotypes surrounding gender specific items this seemed like a very interesting area to research. My research question is: How does stereotypes of children’s clothing and toys influence gender identity? Literature Review: In Jane Little and Carol Martin’s (1990) study, “The Relations of Gender Understanding to Children's Sex-typed Preferences and Gender Stereotypes,” “Once children can accurately label the sexes, they begin to form gender stereotypes and their behavior is influenced by these gender-associated expectations. A cognitive component related to the sex-typing process, however, certainly does not preclude the significance of biological and socialization influences” (Little & Martin, 1990, p. 1437). In this study it showed that boys tended to choose more masculine clothing and the girls feminine items like dresses and frilly items. Toys were also presented to the boys and girls; boys choose more masculine typed toys like trucks, tool kits, motorcycles, army men. The girls choose toys more feminine like Barbie dolls, doll clothes, doll and crib, purse and a beauty kit (Little & Martin, 1990). In Clyde W. Franklin II (2010) study, “Becoming ‘Boys,’ ‘Men,’ Guys,’ and ‘Dudes.” Gender roles were...

...‘Revenge is a confession of pain’ – Latin Proverb. In the view of this statement compare and contrast the extent to which the playwrights demonstrate the idea that revenge arises from the pain of the aggressor. In the view of this statement and in relation to ‘Hamlet’ and ‘The Duchess of Malfi’ it is important to define what pain actually is. Pain relates to grief in terms of Hamlet grieving for his father’s death. It also relates to suffering and injury – be that of the mind or body. There are instances in ‘Hamlet’ and ‘The Duchess of Malfi’ where the motivation for revenge may arise from the emotional pain of the aggressor; there are however acts of revenge shared in these plays that cannot be explained as a confession of pain but rather as a result of self-preservation and duty. Somroo explains that ‘The motive of revenge is a primitive emotion to be found in natural man, though it is a dangerous emotion.’ Somroo explains that revenge is primitive therefore it can be explained as an impulsive emotion born of pain or suffering. This shows that suffering and revenge are closely linked; the idea that revenge is born out of pain has excited audiences throughout history as a theme of revenge tragedies. In this genre of play both Webster and Shakespeare use the theme of revenge to show that it has consequences for every character that is unfortunate enough to be involved as it often results in multiple and an almost comical amount of dead bodies. Shakespeare more than Webster has...
