RReview of ‘This is England’
‘This Is England’ is a movie directed by Shane Meadows. The film takes place in the summer of 1983 in England. Margaret Thatcher rules the country and problems such as poverty and unemployment is affecting England. The plot takes place during the Falkland wars (The war where the main character of the movie, Shaun lost his father) He lives alone with his mother in what we would call poverty or the working class. They don’t have much money so he has to wear pants that are way too big for him. He gets bullied in school for his clothes and doesn’t seem to have any friends. On his way home from school, Shaun meets a group of skinheads, led by a guy named Woody. They let him join their group and soon Shaun looks like the rest of the group, his head gets shaved, he gets doctor Martens shoes and jeans with red braces and of course a Ben Sherman shirt. The group lives on the edge of the law and runs around destroying houses and smoking a lot of hash. Shaun finds a punk girl named Smell and he falls in love with her. The group soon changes a lot when the racist skinhead named Combo is released from prison. He returns the group. He tells the group about his ideas and ends up dividing the group. He made Shaun stay using manipulation; saying that he needed to fight back for his dead father. Combo becomes a bit of a father figure for Shaun and Shaun thinks it cool to be a part of the ‘big boys’. The group sees themselves as nationalist and not racists. The working class has so poor conditions that they try to find their scapegoat. The scapegoat is of course the immigrants. Shaun of course does what the group tells him to do and he isn’t thinking of the consequences. They end up threatening a group of Jewish boys and a man in a local shop. Suddenly he gets involved in a murder when Combo attacks the immigrant Milky from the skinheads group. Shaun now realizes that it isn’t for fun anymore and gets scared.
The film ends when Shaun throws the English flag in the water, as a kind of symbol, that he is over the skinhead group and that he wants to start over again, without judging people who are not from England.
The town that they live in is a small community for the working class. People don’t really trust each other. It’s every man is the architect of his own fortune.
Shaun goes through a lot in the movie. Shaun starts with being a sweet, strong and independent boy. He doesn’t care about what people say about him and he stands up for himself. Then he meets the group of skinheads and now he isn’t so sure of himself anymore. They say that if he wants to be a part of them, he have to get new clothes. He also has to cut his hair, and Shaun does all these things to be a part of the group. When he finally becomes one of the others he begins to tease Tubbs who is also in the group, so the other boy thinks that he is cool. He forgets to think about when it was him, who was being teased. When Shaun meets Combo he also stands up for himself against Combo. When Combo talks about the war where Shaun’s father died he shouts and hit Combo. When Milky gets murdered he becomes a grown up. He can think for himself. He won’t just be the boy who does what he is told to, just to get accepted by the elder boys. He gets over the loss of his father when he throws the flag in the water. He won’t stand up for his father anymore if it means that he has to beat up people. He now knows what wrong and right is. He isn’t angry for his father’s dead. He has accepted it and has become even more independent.
The message is that you should not have prejudices, and that it’s completely all right to come from another country than the one you live in.
I think the movie was alright. They had a lot of accent, so it was a bit hard to understand. The movie was a bit different from other racist movies but it was okay. On a scale from one to ten I would give it a 7.

The sense in the start of asking Shaun to be a member of the group is to give him a little bit of fun in his life but after a few days the really going to like him so they buy him new clothes and cut his hair so he look like one of them. Later in the movie a guy named Combo want to start op his on gang or group and he tell Shaun to be a member of the gang because the will fight for England just like Shaun father did before he died. Woody’s group was more like a peacefully gang whereas Combo’s group was much more violent. The movie takes place in a little village in the poor society in England 1983. There are a lot of problems in the local community. One of the problems is that Combo’s group of skinheads are just threading the city like they want to nobody really dare to stand op for this group of people. That’s just making them do what ever they want to against the people in the village example in the movie they rob a little shop because the owner is an immigrant. Review of This Is England

...That Was England Review by anon It is 1983, and England’s youth culture is filled with mods, new-romantics and skinheads. It is the start of the summer holidays for a 12-year-old boy named Shaun, who lives with his widowed mom. His dad, an army officer, died in the Falklands war. One day while he is walking home from the last day of school, where people have been picking on him all day for wearing flares, he stumbles upon a group of young, and surprisingly kind, skinheads. The leader, Woody, takes pity on young Shaun, and the skinheads take Shaun under their wings. There, a life of girls, parties, Ben Sherman shirts, Doc Martin boots and shaven hairstyles starts for young Shaun. All is good and well until one of Woody’s friends, Combo, turns up, fresh out of 3 years’ imprisonment. Combo soon creates tension in their little group and Shaun finds himself at some of his first major life decisions. Overall, I found the movie really interesting. It had fascinating, complex characters, and you had to read between the lines to fully understand some of them. The plot itself was compelling although a bit fast paced, but that is to be expected when you have to tell a story like that in under two hours. It was interesting to get a glimpse into the skinhead culture of England during the 80's, and get to see how Margaret Thatcher's politicsadivided the nation. The film crew behind ‘This is England’ captured the mood/atmosphere/feeling of the 80’s excellently with their rough editing, grainy...

This Is England Review

...Misfits and skinheads A review of Shane Meadows: This is England. Shaun Fields is a 12 year old in the 1980s, who has a hard time after the death of his father. He is not afraid of saying his opinion and throws a punch whenever someone gets on his nerves. On his way home from school, after being bullied for wearing second hand clothing, Shaun meets a gang of young adults in an underpass. With the gang showing him sympathy, he ends up becoming a part of this gang, and the leader Woody becomes like an older brother to him. Being a part of the gang Shaun finds happiness and joy, and even gets a girlfriend called Smell. However, all the joy ends when an old gang member joins them and tearing them apart, causing chaos between the gang’s friendship. Coming straight out of jail Combo has had an epiphany. He wants to fight for his country, to get rid of all the people whom is not Englishmen by blood, and Combo invites them to join him to fulfill his new vision. Shane Meadows’ interpretation of the skinhead era in the 1980s does an exceptional job colliding a misfit youngster (Shaun Fields), and a gang of peaceful skinheads to help our protagonist find acceptance and happiness, after the tragedy of his father’s death - during the Falklands War. Meadows manages to capture all sorts of emotion during the movie, with some great actors and a well-thought musical atmosphere. With a mixture of the harsh ganglife and the difficulties of life. The settings/feelings of the movie becomes...

The 7 Habits

... Book Reviews Like 17 people like this. What this handout is about This handout will help you write a book review, a report or essay that offers a critical perspective on a text. It offers a process and suggests some strategies for writing book reviews. What is a review? A review is a critical evaluation of a text, event, object, or phenomenon. Reviews can consider books, articles, entire genres or fields of literature, architecture, art, fashion, restaurants, policies, exhibitions, performances, and many other forms. This handout will focus on book reviews. Above all, a review makes an argument. The most important element of a review is that it is a commentary, not merely a summary. It allows you to enter into dialogue and discussion with the work’s creator and with other audiences. You can offer agreement or disagreement and identify where you find the work exemplary or deficient in its knowledge, judgments, or organization. You should clearly state your opinion of the work in question, and that statement will probably resemble other types of academic writing, with a thesis statement, supporting body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Typically, reviews are brief. In newspapers and academic journals, they rarely exceed 1000 words, although you may encounter lengthier assignments and extended commentaries. In either case, reviews need to be succinct. While they vary in tone, subject, and style, they share some common features: First, a review gives the...

...Assignment 2 – Final Project 1. Please explain the similarities and differences between the framework of the Leadership Challenge (A1) and How NASA Builds TEAMS (A2)? Please use as example the Case Study: New England PATRIOTS: Making the Team. Use your creativity. Model the way is the first of the five practices of exemplary leadership. In this practice, a leader needs to ensure that their audience understands and believes in something strongly. Leaders are expected to speak on and stand for matters of conscience and value to the organization. In order to do this, a leader needs to Find Their Voice. In other words, the leader needs to discover what they are passionate about. This practice is analogues to the Express Authentic Appreciation behavior in NASA’s 4-D team building methodology. In order to be able to express authentic appreciation towards their audience, a leader needs to be in tune with what drives the members of his audience. Listening to the audience, asking clarifying questions, and expressing expectations can accomplish this. The second subcomponent of model the way is Affirm Shared Values. This subcomponent is vital to the success of any team, group, or organization because as individuals, we each have different motivators, but if we share core values then building quality relationships can be accomplished. Address Shared Values is the 4-D behavior that when practiced aids in building strong and genuine relationships, which is a fundamental element...

Christopher Haigh's Chapter Summary

...POLITICS IN ENGLAND, 1558-1603: BOOK REVIEW Christopher Haigh- English reformations, religion, politics and society under the Tudors (Oxford University Press 1993) Through Haigh’s analysis, his book does not seek to offer explanations of a great English Reformation event; instead, it will seek to tell the story of all the lesser events which in sum became some English Reformations. This suggests Haigh’s book is delving into more detail over the causes which constituted a reformation. According to Christopher Haigh, in recent attempts to get at the grass roots of Reformation history are frustrating and perhaps futile. Why has it been so difficult for historians to uncover English Reformations? One historical and geographical reason could be: In Tudor England there was no public opinion polls and in a fragmented and localized society there was no public opinion towards the measure of reformation. Thus, there is no form of evidence that will tell us unequivocally what people believed. However there are several sorts of evidence which Haigh displays throughout his book, one being...

Discovering One’s Talent: Learning from Academic Specialization

...of academic Abstract specialization within the British system of higher education to test whether education yields information about one’s match quality in different fields of study. In distinguishing between systems requiring early and late specialization, he predicts the likelihood of an individual switching to an occupation unrelated to one’s field of study. If higher education serves mainly to provide specific skills, the model predicts more switching in a system requiring late specialization since the cost of switching is lower in terms of foregone skills. Using the Universities Statistical Record from 1972 to 1993 and the 1980 National Survey of Graduates and Diplomates, he finds that individuals who specialize early, as in the case of England, are more likely to switch to an unrelated occupation, implying that the benefits to increased match quality are sufficiently large to outweigh the greater loss in skills from specializing early. With regard to instruction, economists have made substantial progress in specifying and identifying the economic value of higher education, as it increases the value productivity of human agents as workers . . . the much neglected activity is that of discovering talent. It, too, can be approached by treating it as a process which provides students with opportunities to discover whether they have the particular capabilities that are required for the type and level of education at which they are working. — Theodore W. ...Mosaic Law as a Sabbatical year wherein the release of all debts that are owed by members of the community is mandated, but not of "foreigners".[1] The seventh Sabbatical year, or forty-ninth year, is then followed by another Sabbatical year known as the Year of Jubilee wherein the release of all debts is mandated, for fellow community members and foreigners alike, and the release of all debt-slaves is also mandated.[2] The Year of Jubilee is announced in advance on the Day of Atonement, or the tenth day of the seventh Biblical month, in the forty-ninth year by the blowing of trumpets throughout the land of Israel. In Islamic teaching, according to the Quran, an insolvent person was deemed to be allowed time to be able to pay out his debt. This is recorded in the Quran's second chapter (Sura Al-Baqara), Verse 280, which notes: "And if someone is in hardship, then let there be postponement until a time of ease. But if you give from your right as charity, then it is better for you, if you only knew." Medieval period[edit] Bankruptcy is also documented in East Asia. Anglo-Saxon Tradition of Christianity

...Why did the Roman tradition of Christianity finally triumph in England? Many have argued that collision between the Celtic and Roman churches in England was inevitable. The Celtic Church held concepts of episcopacy that “were fundamentally different from that of the Roman Church”. For example, under the organisational structure of the Celtic Church, the abbot’s authority was paramount. In contrast to this was the Roman Church, where the bishop was the central figure in the diocese. The most striking issue between the two churches was in relation to ecclesiastical practise. The Celtic Church practised a different form of baptism; tonsure and most notably deviated in their calculation of Easter. One of the earliest examples of this conflict came when St. Augustine met the British bishops in 603. Here, he succeeded in offending the British by refusing to rise upon their entrance, showing that he did not think of his Celtic counterparts as equals. The Easter discrepancy was addressed at the Synod of Whitby in 664. King Oswy of Bernicia, the bretwalda of Northumbria, is reported to have declared that “he would rather be on the side of St. Peter, who held the keys to heaven, than that of St. Columba”. His decision at the synod to accept the Roman method of calculating the feast of Easter marked an end to the rival Celtic tradition. It brought the Church in England closer together by accepting Roman organisation. Despite the advent of the Synod of Whitby, the triumph of the Roman tradition...

Special Needs Children

...Literature Review BSHA/442 August 06, 2012 Dr. Elizabeth Thompson Literature Review Special needs individuals are not different from everyone they just need a little extra help along their way. This population has to have mediation because there are many who cannot speak for themselves. They need the help from a neutral person so that they can discuss complications that they may be dealing with without judgment. Advocacy is a necessity too because that individual needs a person to stand by their side and help them fight for what is right. In todays society people only care about themselves. This hinders those that have special needs because they also need people to think about how a person with special needs can do the same task. Just because an individual has a special does not mean that they cannot do what everyone else can. Advocacy would come in at this point because they are there to be on that individuals’ side and help them. The Special Education Advocacy is located in New England. They state on their web page "I implore you to see with a child's eyes, to hear with a child's ears, and to listen with a child's heart" (Special Education Advocacy, 2009). This is a very powerful statement and draws individuals in because they want that personal experience that they are offering. For the mediation services that they offer it is stated that they have “unbiased mediation for families experiencing...
