Resume Review

As we prepare ourselves for a rewarding future career, we need something that can speak for us when applying for that future position. We need something to help us stand out and be chosen to meet for a face to face interview. A resume is will be our first line of communication to our new and future employment. It should show what we can and know how to do, our education and most importantly or experience that relates to the position we wish to apply.

I have created several different resumes to fit the position I had choose to apply for in the past and I can say that not every time was I chosen to come in and meet with the company. Since then I had improved my resume and it has helped me land great positions to is leading me to my future career goals.

Review Feedback I had recently updated my resume after getting hired with a new company. I had my mother, who has held several leadership roles in the past and now, to look over my resume and provide me feedback as to how I can make it better for any future opportunities. First thing she has told me was that my skills and experience listed where great but, a bit lengthy. She has mentioned that since I am no longer seeking employment in the medical field, which I held for about 4 to 5 years, it is irrelevant to what I hope to apply for in the future in Accounting and/or Administrative work. She has informed me that my resume’s format should be adjusted to that I can try submitting a one page resume or at least a one and a half page to any future employers. Her feedback has great and I do plan on making the adjustments to shorten my resume and making it more relevant to the positions I plane to apply for in the near future.

One of my classmates as well has provided me feedback, Sori. She has said the same thing my mother has said about the format. If I can change it up a bit, by listing my experience and skills in columns, reading it should be a bit easier for the hiring team and should bring my resume down to a page and half.

Conclusion Receiving feedback, whether it was positive or negative, has given great insights as to how I can make my resume better and improve on selling myself to future employers for future positions. What I plan to do is take the advice that Sori and my mother has given me and change the format of my resume around so that my resume does not look too crowded and too lengthy. I also plan to remove whatever skills and experience that is and could be irrelevant to any future positions I plan to apply for. With these feedbacks I received, hopefully in the future, if I ever may need to move forward with a new chapter in my professional life, my updated resume will help me land the position I hope to obtain.

Case Study

...Samuel Smoot 02/16/2016 HR Case Study #1 Overview The three most appropriate selection methods in the hiring process I think would be best would be the Resume/ Curriculum vitae review, Application form and formal interview. Since I have been in the working field, these three methods have been used each and every time for my hiring process. I believe that these three methods are more so traditional used and very effective in selecting the right candidate for a company. I will give an overview on each selection method I have listed and how it would be effective in the hiring process. Resume/ Curriculum Vitae Review The Resume or Curriculum vitae review (as known as the CV) is a summary of a potential candidate’s work experience, education, skills and references. There are different kinds of CV’s that can be used, A Chronological CV, A functional CV and a combined CV. A Chronological CV focusses on presenting the candidate’s experience on an employer by employer basis, with the posts being listed in reverse chronological order. It also contains detail of education and qualifications, together with hobbies. Some chronological CVs also contain a brief personal statement at the front which sets out the key skills and strengths of the candidate. This is the most common type of CV. (Adenle, 2016). A functional CV highlights and shows off a candidate’s skills and abilities rather than work history. It more so used when a candidate......

...Street Waterbury, CT 06708 (203) 555-5555 December 2, 1999 Pat Cummings General Manager Any Corporation 1140 Main Street Chicago, IL 60605 Dear Mr. Cummings: My interest in the position of Masonry Supply Manager (New York Post, November 30) has prompted me to forward my resume for your review and consideration. During the past ten years, my experience has been concentrated in the masonry and plastering products supply industry with a building materials firm. During my six years as General Manager, I took an old line business, which had undergone several years of poor management, and reversed the trend. I upgraded the firm's image, and customer and vendor relations, which subsequently increased the dollar volume and bottom line profits by 300%. I am presently looking for a position where my experience will make a positive contribution to the start-up or continuing profitable operation of a business in which I am so well experienced. I will contact you in a few days to arrange a meeting for further discussion. In the interim, should you require additional information, I may be reached at (203) 222-2222 between 9 A.M. and 5 P.M. ...Letters While your resume is a summary of your credentials, your cover letter should essentially be a sales pitch. Your aim is to demonstrate why your skills and your background make a perfect match for the position you're applying for. The cover letter is not the place to summarize your background--you have already done this in your resume. Remember, employers typically receive hundreds of resumes for each job opening. You must stand out from other job seekers in a positive way. The best way to distinguish yourself is to highlight one or two of your accomplishments or abilities that show you are an above-average candidate for this position. Stressing only one or two unique attributes will increase your chances of being remembered by the recruiter and getting to the interview stage, where you can elaborate on the rest of your accomplishments. You can also gain an extra edge by showing that you have some specific knowledge about the company and industry. This shows that your are genuinely interested in the job you are applying for--and that you are not blindly sending out hundreds of resumes. More importantly, the employer will view your interest as an indication that you are likely to stay with the company for a substantial period of time if you are hired. 10 Key Details to Remember When to send a cover letter: always mail a cover letter with your resume. Even if you are following up an advertisement that reads simply "send resume," be sure to include......

The Best Cover Letter I Ever Received

...The Best Cover Letter I Ever Received Harvard Business Review – David Silverman - 1:18 PM Monday June 15, 2009 In my last post I talked about how to make your résumé more likely to catch the attention of a hiring manager. As a follow up, I'd like to discuss cover letters. Here's my basic philosophy on them: don't bother. That's because the cover letters I see usually fall into one of three categories: The recap: The résumé in prose form. It's redundant, harder to read than the résumé, and provides no additional insight. The form letter: This says, essentially, "Dear Sir or Madam: I saw your ad in the paper and thought you might like me." And it's clearly a form letter where maybe they got my name and company right. If they're lucky, I will still take the time to read their résumé after being insulted with a form letter. The "I'm crazy": This one's rare, and it expands on the résumé of experience with some personal insights. Examples range from the merely batty ("I find batik as an art form has taught me to become both a better person and project manager.") to the truly terrifying ("I cast a pentagram hex and the central line pointed towards your job listing. I know you will find this as comforting as I do.") There are really only a few times to use a cover letter: 1. When you know the name of the person hiring 2. When you know something about the job requirement 3. When you've been personally referred (which might include 1 and 2) Under those......

Cover letters as referred to in the U.S have multiple names internationally like letters of interest and motivation letters. Regardless of the name the process is still the same however typically self-photos of the applying individual are attached to a cover letter, resume or both whereas in the U.S, photos are not appropriate attachments when looking for employment. It is also important to remember that paper sizes differ in other countries so altering your document size will be necessary if you want all your information to come through, otherwise your resume, fax, email etc. may have some missing information when viewed or printed out. It is ideal to send both a resume in English and the language of the country in which you are applying to. You may even need to prepare yourself to be interviewed in both languages (Thompson,...
