Abstract
RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) is a technology that incorporates the use of electromagnetic or electrostatic coupling in the radio frequency (RF) portion of the electromagnetic spectrum to uniquely identify an object, animal, or a person. It is an automatic identification method, relying on storing and remotely retrieving data whenever required using devices called RFID Tags or transponders. It is also called Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC). I would like to make a presentation on the following topics related to RFID technology: * Brief overview of RFID technology * Basic components of RFID * Standards followed * Simple working and Sequence of Communication involved * Advantages, applications and future scope
Components of RFID
Technology
Tags (Chip + Antenna):
An RFID Tag is an object that can be stuck on or incorporated into a product, animal or a person for the purpose of identification using radio waves. There are two main components present in the RFID tag. Firstly, a small silicon chip or integrated circuit which contains a unique identification number (ID). Secondly, an antenna that can send and receive radio waves
Interrogators (Antenna + Reader):
Interrogators are used to read the Tags & in certain cases even write on them.
Middleware:
Middleware is the needed interface between the existing company databases & information management software. Middleware provides a range of functions:
• Data Filtering
• System Monitoring
• Multiple Reader Co-ordination
Standards
The number and use of standards within RFID and its associated industries is quite complex, involves a number of bodies and is in a process of development. EPC Global is an organization that has defined standards for a range of features of global RFID systems which is the most widely accepted standard in supply chain management.

How does RFID work? the tags contain electronically stored information. Some tags are powered by electromagnetic induction from magnetic fields produced near the reader. Some types collect energy from the interrogating radio waves and act as a passive transponder. Other types have a local power source such as a battery and may operate at hundreds of meters from the reader.Unlike a barcode, the tag does not necessarily need to be within line of sight of the reader and may be embedded in the tracked object. ...RFID in transportation Gopi Krishna Potla Wilmington University Abstract: Radio Frequency Identification is the most prevailing technology in the current world. RFID has many successful applications. Transportation is one among such applications. The use of RFID in transportation made tracking to things easy. RFID increase the efficiency of transportation, saves time and money. It is used in trucking, shipping, airports and also in railways. In this paper, RFID technology is explained briefly at the beginning. Later, implementation of RFID on different ways of transportation is illustrated. The standards of RFID in transportation are also presented. Introduction: RFID stands for Radio-Frequency Identification. RFID technology is a type of wireless communication in which radio waves are used to recognize people and objects. The purpose of an RFID system is transmitting data from a portable device, called a tag, to an RFID reader to execute a particular application based on the tag provided identification or location information (Graafstra, 2006; O' Brien, 2006). This was initially developed for improving warfare technologies. Now, it has been a part of everyone’s routine life. It consists of a tag with a chip and an antenna for sending and receiving data. The technology consolidates with an interrogator (reader), which has an antenna that communicates with the tag. This is an enhanced distinct option for barcodes as it has read and write capabilities. ...Information Systems for Supply Chain Management – Paper 1 – RFID Alex Bartell ____________________________________________________________ _________________________ Radio frequency identification (RFID) significantly increases supply chain efficiency by creating an electronic tracking system that encompasses the entire product life cycle. The technology was first discovered during World War II so countries could differentiate their aircrafts from those of their enemies. Just-in-time supply chains were made possible after the innovation of RFID technology. The ability to track products from raw materials to the end customer has brought to light many opportunities for process improvement. Information systems have integrated in RFID recognition technology in order to reduce the number of steps and manual data input required when tracking a product. RFID has created endless ways to track consumer behavior by storing buying habits and transaction details. Radio frequency identification was originally used for military purposes during World War II. In 1935, the radar technology capable of locating aircrafts was invented by Sir Robert Alexander Watson-Watt (Roberti). Planes were able to be identified but there was no way to distinguish between different countries aircrafts. The Germans discovered that when their own pilots rolled the aircrafts, the radar would pick up a slightly different signal, thus creating the first form of RFID technology. The British started placing transmitters...

...Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION Background of the Study Managing correctional population is a challenging and expensive task for state and local jurisdictions. In recent years, methods of securities were implemented to secure the inmates and to lessen the cases of escapes. These help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of correctional management. According to Lukens, there was a problem in monitoring the inmates during the headcount procedure as the inmates portray the appearance of a sleeping person in cell beds. To resolve this dilemma, they required all the inmates to stand in order in specific area at the same time during headcounts. It was observed that the time it takes to finish this procedure was impractical so they switch to a procedure of checking each inmate in their individual cells (Preventing Prison Escapes and Responding to Security Audits, 2000). Traditional way of monitoring the inmates was considered as impractical as it only applies on situational instances. Wortley (2002) said, that one of possible reasons why prisoners were able to escape prisons is the way these traditional approaches were implemented. Two inmates of the Manila City Jail escaped and had disarmed ten officers in their wake. Due to the heavy rain, they had gone unnoticed by the roving guard on duty that night (Andrade, 2012). In 2002, 17 inmates at BJMP Tagum City Jail escaped in broad daylight. Outnumbering the personnel on duty during the headcount in the morning, the inmates took opportunity...

...RFID and Oracle Inventory System Management Riordan’s daily operations are inefficient and time consuming. Every stage of the supply chain is observed, tracked, recorded, and updated all visually and manually. The delivery of raw materials to the manufacturing warehouse requires a shipping supervisor to receive shipments from truck drivers with the shipping documents to show what has been ordered. This paperwork is than compared to a scheduled orders receiving report. This report is provided to the receiving are on a weekly basis. Once everything is confirmed by the supervisor, it is then handed to the inventory clerk to enter into the inventory system. The manufacturing of goods follows the same type of process. Raw materials that are used are recorded on an inventory form which is then turned into the inventory clerk at the end of the day. This process doesn’t allow up-to-date information on current warehouse stock levels. Then there is product shipping. Sales orders are taken through fax, phone, and sales employees. Sales orders are then copied and handed to the inventory clerk and entered into the customer shipping and billing system. With each shipping order sent, workers loading trucks then send those shipping documents to the clerk to update the inventory of sub-assemblies and final products in the system. These processes have a lot of physical handling of receiving, processing, and shipping goods. This can be very time consuming to manually track, record...

...Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) RFID RFID stands for Radio frequency identification. It is a technology that uses communication via radio waves to exchange data between a reader and an electronic tag attached to an object, for the purpose of identification and tracking. It's grouped under the broad category of automatic identification technologies. RFID is fast, reliable, and does not require physical sight or contact between reader/scanner and the tagged item RFID is also called dedicated short range communication (DSRC). History Invented in 1948 by Harry Stockman. Initial application was during World War II-The United Kingdom used RFID devices to distinguish returning English airplanes from inbound German ones. RADAR was only able to signal the presence of a plane, not the kind of plane it was.. Came into commercial use only in 1990s. Identification * Assign IDs to objects * Link the ID to additional information about the object * Link the ID to complementary info * Find similar objects Components A basic RFID system consists of three components: * An antenna or coil * A transceiver (with decoder) * A transponder (RF tag) * The antenna emits radio signals to activate the tag and to read and write data to it. * The reader emits radio waves in ranges of anywhere from one inch to 100 feet or more, depending upon its power output and the radio frequency used. ...Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is not beneficial to the society The advancement of information and technology has been the most influential aspect throughout the last century of the Modern World. Moreover, the rapid development and pace in the field of technology have opened up literally world of possibilities for the future. While considering this, the innovation of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) in information and technology makes an incredible stride in modern businesses’ and societies’ progression. “RFID is the generic name for technologies that use radio waves to identify and track objects automatically”(Jones, Hill, Hiller & Comfort, 2005). RFID system comprises tags with integrated circuit where data is stored, a reader and antenna which communicate between reader and tags. The tags could be active, passive or semi-passive. Active tags have built in battery and can be used for reading and writing capabilities. Similarly, semi-passive tags contain a battery that enables longer reading distance and also enable the tags to operate independently of the reader whereas passive tags do not have power source and do not have writing capability. This RFID system does not require line of sight to detect data like in bar code system. The reader transmits wave signal where the tags use this signal as power source or use the power in circuit to transmit data stored in tags back to the reader. The data acquired by the reader is then passed to a host computer or any...
