My group and I: Christine, E’loni, and Jonathan, were assigned Proposition 62 which is about ending the death penalty in California. Proposition 62 is proposing to replace the death penalty with life in prison without parole. This is beneficial for grieving families because this will reduce the number of times they have to attend the never ending appeals of the guilty inmate since the inmate is trying to get off the death penalty. Often times, the inmate dies before they even get executed. If the proposition is passed, the inmate will be sentenced to life in prison without parole. The inmate will also be forced to work and some of that money will go towards the victim’s family instead of just sitting around until the day of execution. We had to support Proposition 62 for our video. …show more content…
We had to create a 30 second ad about voting for proposition 62 that showed all three rhetorical appeals ethos, pathos, logos and would persuade the audience. The purpose of the assignment is to be able to effectively persuade the audience on choosing your position on your proposition. Our work effectively communicated our argument that keeping the death penalty is ineffective and should be replaced so that the state can save money while keeping our communities safe and healthy. We did this by triggering the audience’s emotions to re-evaluate why they want to keep the death penalty when it is more harmful than beneficial. Currently the death penalty costs 18 times more than life in prison. More people die in death row for natural factors than actually going through the execution. We gave facts like these to the audience to help them see the issues on the death penalty rather than only wanting “justice” by using an inefficient

UPTON AND MARY ANN COHEN Abstract This article presents a seven-step corpus-based approach to discourse analysis that starts with a detailed analysis of each individual text in a corpus that can then be generalized across all texts of a corpus, providing a description of typical patterns of discourse organization that hold for the entire corpus. This approach is applied specifically to a methodology that is used to analyze texts in terms of the functional/communicative structures that typically make up texts in a genre: move analysis.
