The article Punk’s Not Dead, was written by Josh Delmar Zimmerman, a previously employed Northern Arizona University writing program professor, who now lectures as a high school teacher in Oregon. This anecdotal, four paged article, discusses how individuals eventually become judged and stereotyped based upon specific characteristics they hold, or attribute themselves to. Zimmerman reflects upon his youth in an attempt to demonstrate this common action in society. He offers the readers of his article the ability to visualize his punk past and his punk experiences, displaying the manner in which stereotyping presents itself with specific preferences people have for music. By doing so, Josh Zimmerman attempts to portray that when individuals choose to associate themselves with the unconventional at the expense of being generalized, that such decisions enable the individual to formulate their own unique characteristics. This approach of displaying his contention, thus, became overwhelmingly emotional. This can clearly be observed toward the end of his piece where he states, “Think about it. If you were an authority figure threatened by strong minds that have not yet matured, wouldn’t you be afraid? Fuck yeah you would” (557). This statement presents itself with an exaggerated amount of pathos appeal as Josh Delmar Zimmerman purposefully alluded to his young punk character that he discussed throughout the entire article. It embodies that rebellious, care free attitude that Zimmerman so clearly depicted with statements such as “Sometimes whirling around in a circle of individuals with arms flying, legs kicking, bodies slamming, music thrashing, and lyrics penetrating is dangerous” (577).
