One major rhetorical strategy is the strengthening of speaker’s ethos through applying pathos. At the beginning of the film Ariely opens up with a story of his personal life to get the audience’s attention, and to demonstrate his knowledge. He goes on to talk about how he was severely burned, and when he asked the nurses to change the bandages slowly they ripped them off. He ended up analyzing this form of rebellion and started to study and devote his life to the knowledge of human behavior. This story helps apply pathos because he opens up with a personal story, but it also shows the evidence that he has had many experiences with this in his life. This is demonstrated when they play deep music that takes a dramatic and sad tone during the duration of the big impact lying interviews. It can be heard in Holiday’s story, Bolar’s story, and several others where they play tense tunes when talking about the major lies they told in their life. They chose to use this type of music to get the viewer to feel more concern over the subject. When dramatic music is used it gives the listener a sense vulnerability that leaves them unsure about the situation. In turn, it can be heard that the producers chose to use bubbly music when informing about situations when little lies were told for the benefit of someone. This can be seen when a story is told about a man pretending to be an air marshal in order to calm a lady down on a particularly rough plane ride. In doing this, the little white lie led to the woman calming down which was beneficial to her and those around her. The playing of light music helps remind the watchers that lies aren’t always a terrible thing, and it helps remove the feeling of instability that was presented in deeper parts of the plot.
