Childbirth is usually perceived as the epitome of joy in one's life because it is the miracle of a baby being born. We expect everyone to feel joyful as life is introduced into the world. Annie Dillard is in an obstetricians ward and witnesses a nurse cleanse a newborn baby. Unlike the happiness one might feel when caring for a baby she utilizes the nurse Pat Eisberg and her job to show that the processing of babies has become nothing more than a boring task. The situation has become much like an assembly line in a factory as the babies are treated as they are objectified. Throughout the passage Dillard uses various rhetorical devices to show how the love for this phenomena is now nothing more than a dull and unemotional job. Dillard uses

Rhetorical Analysis On Annie Dillard

...In the eighth paragraph, Dillard lists everything that Rahm was able to do with his airplane. She saw him complete, “tailspins, flat-spins, figure 8’s, snap rolls, and hammerheads.” Dillard creates the list in order to convey how continues and flowing all of Rahm’s actions looked from the ground compared to the other pilots. The list also forces the audience to read faster, which represents that speed of the airplane. To the crowd watching, he looked “like a brush marking thin air.” Dillard includes this simile in order to further establish her awed tone, and to emphasize to her audience how her attitude towards Rahm has changed. Dillard uses another long sentence in the tenth paragraph. Instead of using periods, she uses commas to complete...

Rhetorical Analysis Of Death Of The Moth By Annie Dillard

...Rhetorical Précis “The Death of the Moth” By Annie Dillard Annie Dillard in her essay, “The Death of the Moth” (1945), asserts that in order for her life to have meaning, she would have to do something that outlasted her life as a human being. Dillard supports her assertion by comparing her purpose in life to the one moth that did not turn to ash in the midst of the fire but flourished in spite of its last moments. The author’s purpose is to share an anecdote as to explain why she is the way she is in order to inspire another generation of writers. The author writes in an awestruck tone for the class she is speaking to so they may realize just how poetic life as a writer can be. “Black Men and Public Space” By Brent Staples Brent...

C16 Students examine rhetoric in essays, images, movies, novels, and speeches. They frequently confer about their writing by conferencing in class. C 14 Feedback is given both before and after students revise their work to help them develop logical organization, enhanced by specific techniques to increase coherence. Rhetorical structures, graphic organizers, and work on repetition, transitions, and emphasis are addressed. I comment on individual drafts, and I write memos to the class in a blog about whole-class concerns such as specificity of quotations, parallelism, and transitions. C13 Simultaneously, students review the simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentence classifications. We examine word order, length, and surprising constructions. Loose and periodic sentences are introduced. We examine sample sentences and discuss how change affects tone, purpose, and credibility of the author/speaker. In addition, feedback on producing sentence structure variety is focused on critical thinking skills, evaluating sources and resources, using...

PREFACE Rationale We agreed to produce the instructor’s manual for the sixth edition of A First Look at Communication Theory because it’s a first-rate book and because we enjoy talking and writing about pedagogy. Yet when we recall the discussions we’ve had with colleagues about instructor’s manuals over the years, two unnerving comments stick with us: “I don’t find them much help”; and (even worse) “I never look at them.” And, if the truth be told, we were often the people making such points! With these statements in mind, we have done some serious soul-searching about the texts that so many teachers—ourselves...

Living History

...___________________________ LIVING HISTORY Hillary Rodham Clinton Simon & Schuster New York • London • Toronto • Sydney • Singapore To my parents, my husband, my daughter and all the good souls around the world whose inspiration, prayers, support and love blessed my heart and sustained me in the years of living history. AUTHOR’S NOTE In 1959, I wrote my autobiography for an assignment in sixth grade. In twenty-nine pages, most half-filled with earnest scrawl, I described my parents, brothers, pets, house, hobbies, school, sports and plans for the future. Forty-two years later, I began writing another memoir, this one about the eight years I spent in the White House living history with Bill Clinton. I quickly realized that I couldn’t explain my life as First Lady without going back to the beginning―how I became the woman I was that first day I walked into the White House on January 20, 1993, to take on a new role and experiences that would test and transform me in unexpected ways. By the time I crossed the threshold of the White House, I had been shaped by my family upbringing, education, religious faith and all that I had learned before―as the daughter of a staunch conservative father and a more liberal mother, a student activist, an advocate for children, a lawyer, Bill’s wife and Chelsea’s mom. For each chapter, there were more ideas I wanted to discuss than space allowed; more people to include than could be named; more places visited than could be described...
