Difference between a Right and a Privilege Rights can generally be described as legal, ethical or social principles of entitlement or freedom. In other words, rights are essential normative rules that describe what is owed to people or allowed to people, following some legal system, ethical theory or social convention. Rights are of crucial importance in disciplines such as ethics and law, especially theories of deontology and justice. On the other side, privileges can generally be described as an exclusive entitlement to the exception granted an authority or the state to a particular person or a restricted group either on a conditional basis or by birth. However, these privileges can be revoked in relation to certain circumstances. Additionally, any right owned by the government turns to be a privilege. In discussing the differences between privileges and rights one can start by mentioning that a right is an irrevocable, inherent entitlement held by all human beings or citizens from the moment of birth. However, the main difference between a privilege and a right is that when a right being enjoyed by a person is revoked, then this will be injustice while on the other hand, a privilege given to a person can be revoked without necessary being taken as an injustice case but as unfair. Additionally, a person’s rights are essential for that person’s freedom while privileges are mostly essential for the safety of that particular person. Additionally, according to Thomas Jefferson “we hold these truths to be self- evident, that all humans are created equal, awarded by their Creator with assured unalienable Rights, among them Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness”. Thomas from his quote also believed that the government had no power to revoke any person’s rights either to walk, live or right to speech. It could violate any privilege it offers to its citizens but revoking the rights that will be an injustice. It is the government that owns the privileges while the citizens own the rights. An example of rights is the bill of rights that is provided in the constitutions which the fundamental rights to which equalizes all the citizens regardless of race, wealth status, and position in the society. The privileges are not a must to cut across citizens in the country but in most cases they are enjoyed by the government employees. According to the former US President Roosevelt, who once said that rights are not something to be given to someone but rather something that nobody can take away from a person. Hence all human beings are born with rights, some to which may happier unnecessary but are still unalienable and must be enjoyed by the entire citizen. On the contrary, privileges are granted to a person by the government when they consider it right. The rights are owned by citizens and can only be denied in case of misconduct, a situation where the victims’ rights are limited while privileges can be revoked and denied at any time by the government not necessarily due to misconduct by a citizen. Rights at the same time cuts across all citizens in all the states as in the united states and that is why in the arrest of Martin Luther King Junior while serving jail term in Birmingham said, “injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere” (Africa.upenn.edu) this was an indication that no matter the part one was in America they were entitled to enjoy the same rights as provided by their constitution and the government had no power to interfere with them. This helps in determining the difference between a right and privilege as the privileges can be interfered with them from the person providing them. Democratic government should be able to protect the right of its citizen since it is the citizen with power to choose who will lead for them. Therefore, it is clear “People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people” (YouTube). An indication of what is needed is expected from a democratic government where individual rights are respected and protected since election right belong to the people, and the elected are just people's representatives to act on their behalf. The denial of a right is injustice unlike a privilege which can be revoked. In sum, rights of citizens are unalienable and should be owned by them unlike privileges that are under the government control. The rights of individuals have been interfered with by the government and have made many activities, and democratic leaders respond to this claiming that the unalienable nature of rights and should not be confused with privileges. Therefore, privileges are government owned while right are individual owned, and this should not confuse by government leadership that have reversed the rights for privileges.

Is Homosexual Marriage a Right or Priviledge?

...Is homosexual marriage a right or privilege? Julie Camp PHI: 103 Informal Logic Instructor: Stephen Krogh September 24, 2013 Is Homosexual marriage a right or privilege? Informal logic is used to provide reasoning’s to assist in examining an argument. A conclusion needs well supporting evidence to provide productive and positive results. A political argument today is on homosexual marriage. My argument will be that the union of homosexual marriage does not have strong enough reasons to provide a productive and positive result because first, God created the institution of marriage, moreover going against the values and morals this country was built on, lastly same sex marriage will not produce a fruitful union. First, God created the institution of marriage between opposite sexes. A nation build on Christianity and under god, religious beliefs found to be just as important as the political one on equality. Traditionalist argue that marriage between a man and a woman should not be changed because of “prism of contemporary American society” (Campbell & Robinson, 2007, p. 131). This is the refracting of understanding of scripture. As Montgomery (2003) states in Kingston-Whig Standard “God is still the supreme ruler of this land, and neither the multicultural program of liberalism nor the strong homosexual political machine can change that, no matter how hard they try” ( para. 8) . Regarding the war on gay marriage the public opinion constitutes a “hard case” for the...

...could’ve ever happened to me was the day I found out I was pregnant. Having being sick and facing different health issues I was told at the age of fourteen that I would never be able to have kids. Hearing that statement, sent chills up my spin, and made me feel empty inside. My husband and I continued to have the faith that one day Go would see fit to bless us due to the fact we come from a religious background. The ones who know me know I have a passion for children and a diagnosis like this made me feel less of a woman. Happily to say bad news turned into good news. Being able to give birth to children is an honor and blessing, each development process is different and the fact in knowing you can help nurture and see your kids grow up is a priviledge. Firstly, being able to give birth to children is an honor and blessing. The first time I was told I was pregnant seemed like a dream because I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Every little thing I was instructed to do by my OB/GYN I made sure I did it to the fullest. I didn’t want anything to go wrong, and I even researched on the internet as well as brought books I felt would help me during my pregnancy. Knowing that a precious seed was growing inside of me changed my body tremendously, but in the end it was all well worth it. In the midst of my pregnancy my husband had to buy me some new shoes and clothes as my body transitioned. It didn’t bother me at in any way because I was elated to know that God decided to bless me to carry...

Nahusa and Shudra Disputes in Ambedkar's Essay

...Nahusha story in Brahmin versus Shudras(B.R.Ambedkar) In the essay “Brahmin vs. Shudras” Ambedkar points out three major points of disputes and contentions between Brahmins and Kshatriyas. Firstly, Brahmins had the right to receive gifts. A payment without any kind of work is generally called the ‘gifts’. According to the Brahmins nobody but only they had the right to receive such ‘gifts’. Thus the contention between the Brahmins and Kshatriyas went on. Secondly, the Brahmins thought that it was the priviledge of the Brahmins only to teach the Vedas. Thus the Kshatriyas had no right to teach the Vedas. So, that particular right of the Brahmins also created a major contention between the Brahmins and the Kshatriyas. Thirdly, the right to officiate at the sacrifice was one of the major issues of the contention between the Brahmins and Kshatriyas. Brahmins believed that Kshatriyas had no right to officiate as a Purohit(priest) at a sacrifice. Thus a dispute emerged as the Brahmins had the priviledge to officiate at a sacrifice. The story of Trishanku, narrated in Ramayana is an immediate instance of the dispute between the Brahmins and the Kshatriyas. This contention is particularly on the third point that is the right of the Brahmins only to officite at the sacrifice. King Trishanku wanted to perform a sacrifice by which he would go bodily to heaven but Vasishtha, the brahmin rishi says that it was impossible. Then Trishanku sought the help of the...

After more than 6 months of being a Nurse Volunteer, I am so blessed that my mentors and my alma mater were so supportive on my career that’s why I was given the opportunity to work and teach as a clinical instructor in the school where i graduated from then in a university after 10 months of teaching experience, even though academic and experience wise, I am not still qualified. The Role of Government

...a given time (“Wikipedia”n.d). Governments consist of the legislators, administrators, and the arbitrators. Government is the way that state policies are enforced, as well as the way of determining the policies of the state (“Wikipedia”n.d). The role of Government can consist of many different views. It can be viewed as our protector, someone who defends our nation against our enemies, such as terrorist, or even as a burden in our everyday lives, such as the taxes that we have to pay. The Government also plans against tough times by putting aside surplus, commodities, and against famine (“Wikipedia”n.d). According to the Former Secretary of Agriculture, Ezra Taft Benson, “The most important single function of government is to secure the rights and freedoms of individual citizens. The government greatest role in our economy is to enforce laws and rules that must be abide by the people. One example of the ways that the government enforces laws and rules is by examining criminal copyright violations, get indictments and prosecute criminals for their actions. The government also supplies statutes for civil enforcement and hands jurisdiction to federal courts in order to hear a copyright case against a violator. Last but not least, the government agency plays a vital role in the time of disaster. Dana Wright Controversy

Since my arrival at Jonathan Alder High School in 2007, Dana and I have collaborated to revolutionize the way we teach ELA at JAHS. JAHS students do not see Mrs. Wright as a school librarian. She is a co-teacher and resource whom they can rely on to help them in any subject area, with any assignment, even after they graduate and enter the collegiate or work worlds. The beginning was a glorious time as I was one of the few teachers who saw the genius of Dana’s knowledge and teaching abilities. The library became my second classroom and Dana a part of our regular curriculum. As other teachers saw the benefit of collaborating with Dana in lesson design,...

Wong Kim Ark Case Study

...The definition of whiteness, and who has the right to be a citizen, has been an ongoing debate throughout our country's history. Starting as far back as 1790 up though present day, the guidelines for who is ‘white’ and in turn, who has the right to become a citizen, have changed over and over again. This podcast explains a lot of the reasoning and thought process that went into the decision of the Wong Kim Ark case back in 1895, when he tried to reenter the country when the Chinese Exclusion Acts were taking place, and how he had to fight to prove that he was a US citizen. In the Wong Kim Ark case, a big portion of what decided whether he could re enter the United States or not, dealt with the concept of birthright citizenship. His parents...

Human Service Organisation

...What is Social Accountability (SAc)? |   | Accountability in common parlance means “answerability”. It is about holding people to account for their impacts on the lives of people and the environment. It involves the rights of those impacted and the obligations of those with power. Thus, accountability can be defined as the obligation of power- holders to account for or take responsibility of their actions. Thus, Social Accountability can be defined as ‘the duty to provide an account or reckoning of those actions for which one is held responsible. Thus, accountability involves two responsibilities or duties: the responsibility to undertake certain actions (or forbear from taking action) and the responsibility to provide an account of those actions’ (Rob Gray, 1996, Accounting & Accountability).  | Social Accountability of NGOs |   | The priviledge of being an NGO comes with the onus of benevolent and public purpose activities. An NGO comes into existence only with the pre condition of working for charitable purposes involving public benefit without having any profit motive. There is a big difference between the social responsibilities of an NGO and a profit making corporate. A profit making commercial organization may opt for various activities, which enhances its social accountability as well as credibility. An NGO on the other hand has to work for public purposes in order to retain its legal and ethical entity. As organizations interact with a number of other institutions...

The Struggle for Equality in Marriage of Gay and Lesbian Couples

...any middle ground with this debate, one is either in support of this issue of gay marriage, or one is opposed to it. Whatever your feelings are regarding this issue, there is no denying that gay marriage will be an issue for debate for a very long time. While religion may say it is wrong many people believe gay and lesbian couples deserve the same rights as straight couples and do not deserve to be treated differently. Webster’s dictionary defines marriage as n., (1) the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual or contractual relationship recognized by law,(2) the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage <same-sex marriage>. This change in definition was made in 2003. Marriage should be about getting married to that special someone that you love, it is not just a piece of paper that ties us together. It also involves legal, economic and social aspects as well. Civil unions and domestic partnerships are discussed every day in society, but neither is the same as a “legal” marriage, and are not afforded the same rights as straight married couples. Health insurance is difficult enough for married couples without the challenge being faced by same sex couples. Every state, as well as every insurance company has a different set of policies, rules, options and benefits. Now a new batch of standards is arising as the Affordable Care Act begins to take effect. In California...

If you're going to have a pilot as a career, during the early days of your training, confidence is already being buildt up on you so that is to overcome the fear, so that you won't have any fear—like in my case, I'm in the airline industry, I'm carrying like a hundred-eighty passengers [on] every flight, it won't look good if you [have] fear on the flight deck so a pilot must not have any fear or anything when doing his...
