Rise Up

Tiffany R. Sims
African American Art
Dr. Akua McDaniel
Struggle. Hope. Change. Since the colonial period, and even many years before this time period, African-American people struggled with inequality, lack of rights, and racial injustice. This struggle came to a historical high during The Civil War in the 1860’s. With much effort and persistence, the war ended and slavery was abolished in the nation. The result brought hope to black people in the United States. This newfound faith amongst black people was captured in many different forms, such as propaganda, literature, and most importantly, art. Two black, female artists portrayed this spirit in the forms of sculptures. During the Post-Civil War era, Edmonia Lewis and Meta Warrick Fuller created works that symbolized the struggle for freedom, hope for the future, and a need for change for African-American people. The American Civil War was arguably one of the most deadliest and important events in the nation’s history. Political tensions came to an all-time high and caused a split and war amongst the States from 1861-1865. Slavery was a root cause of the war. The North, also known as the Union, was fighting for the abolishment of slavery while the South, also known as the Confederacy, was fighting to preserve slavery laws in the nation. In the end, the North prevailed and laws were made to end slavery and give black people the rights and privileges they deserved. The end of the war brought about a new attitude for black people. As laws were being passed and slaves were being set free, African-Americans started to believe and know that there was hope for a better future. Black people began to experience a sense of liberation from the bonds of slavery and were ready to embark on the road to freedom that they had so long been deprived of. All these feelings...

Rise Up Your Flag

...Raise up your flag! The truth is a bitter pill That’s always hard to swallow But I’m going to accept it nonetheless Though I’ve still got a long way to go I’ve had to keep becoming stronger So I won’t follow in those footsteps again And as I sweep away the embers, I draw closer To striking at the heart of it all So I won’t give in, I’ll keep fighting back Until I’ve destroyed the rules of this world! So take the field, with a triumphant roar! I won’t be swayed anymore Even if this new power I’ve gained Tries to test what I’m made of Just raise your flag up high And shout at the top of your lungs And when I reach the next level Then untold power will be in my hands! Hip, hip, hurrah! Hip, hip, hurrah! Hip, hip, hurrah! Raise up your flag! When there’s nothing you can do to fight back You’re stuck suffering under their values But I refuse to stay quiet And follow the pack If you can’t abide the howling winds Then find their source, and shut them down I will protect the hope to choose The future we want to see If you accept these unjustifiable sacrifices are unavoidable, then nothing will ever change So take the field, with a triumphant roar! Don’t let them take the easy escape If you can find another way Then we’ll have nothing to fear Just swing your flag wide And sweep away the clamoring noise Smash the truths we believe in And change the world! Hip, hip, hurrah! Hip, hip, hurrah! Hip, hip, hurrah! Raise up......

Copper vs. Fiber

...Copper vs. Fiber They are two major types of cables used in networking, copper and fiber. Each cable are used in different application regarding to its usage. They also have different strengths cause of the material they are made of. Copper is the most common out of the two cables. Not as powerful as Fiber, but are ideal for buildings up to 100m. Fiber is mostly used for longer distances that copper can’t reach. For example, Fiber is ideal for high-rise buildings. Both cables do have their weakness. Copper can contract electrical current cause’s disruption between two devices and loses its signal over 100m in length. Fiber has a glass core. Bending the fiber to much will break the glass and renders the fiber useless. I good example for using each cable in a real world situation would be a high-rise building. Take the empire state building, you couldn’t possibly use copper wires to connect to each switch from each floor to the main hub. The signal will fade on the higher levels of the building. And you wouldn’t want to use fiber to connect from a switch to each room or outlet. Too many cramped spaces and you would not want to bend the fiber too much for the signal to break. So, you can use the fiber to connect from the main hub of the building to each switch on every level and you wouldn’t bend the fiber to its breaking point. Copper can be used to connect the rooms to the switch and you wouldn’t have to worry about having to break a piece of glass to go around or...

Bid to Construct a High-Rise Residential Apartment Building

...Evaluation of Security Programs SEC 420 Case Study 1 01/16/2016 Case Study 1 I just won a bid to construct a high-rise residential apartment building. The complex is to be located in an area of the city which borders a high-crime urban area on one side, and industrial facilities on the other. This will present several challenges that will require strategic planning to overcome or reduce the level of risk or threats. The construction will be built with a design that accommodates the needs of the occupants and owners especially those involving security and territorial space. Considering the industrial facilities surrounding the apartment it is important that the building will suit residents that are associated to the industrial facilities in the area. The building will have a modern designed with an attractive complex structure for people who are looking for an apartment. I will consider the following factors that will incorporate the needs of the occupants and owners, which include; territoriality; natural surveillance; design guidelines; territory and personal defense strategies; and confidence restoration strategies. I begin with territoriality of the construction planning. According to Robert A. Gander “Territoriality involves an individual's perception of, and relationship with, the environment. A strong sense of territoriality encourages an individual to take control of his or her environment and defend it against attack.” In order to......

...uses five of the ten elements of architecture to create quite a notable building. These five elements are expressed in the buildings materials, the architect’s use of lines and repetition, how the building balances astatically, and the tower’s scale. Material This tower is constructed on top of a 24 foot thick concrete base. The tower is erected by a steel skeleton and is faced with “blond brick and creamy terra-cotta”. This healthy base and firm skeleton contribute to the firmness of this building. The four faces of the tower have Seth Thomas clocks, all with arms measuring six feet long. There is, finally, a 2.5 ton bell in the top two stories of the tower. Line As with any tower, the majority of the lines draw the audience’s eyes up from the bottom to the top. The majority of the tower’s lines are vertical, with a subtle horizontal contrast from the lines of windows on the faces. Just below the clock, the architect constructed a prominate horizontal line. This horizontal line appears due to an observation deck like platform. This floor only stops the vertical sides of the building for only 2 or 3 stories before another horizontal line. These two parallel horizontal lines create a box-like shape that dramatically stopping the eye’s move upward to draw attention to the ornamentation of this part of the tower. Above this block, is a smaller square section that hosts the clocks. This section is smaller and less ornamental to draw the viewer towards the clock. Finally,......

Housing Business

...Apartment • Apartment: a relatively self-contained housing unit in a building which is often rented out to one person or a family, or two or more people sharing a lease in a partnership, for their exclusive use. Sometimes called a flat or digs (slang). Some locales have legal definitions of what constitutes an apartment. In some locations, "apartment" denotes a building that was built specifically for such units, whereas "flat" denotes a unit in a building that had been originally built as a single-family house, but later on subdivided into some multi-unit house type.[5] • Apartment building, Block of flats: a multi-unit dwelling made up of several (generally four or more) apartments. Contrast this with the two-family house and the three-family dwelling. An apartment (in US English) or flat (in British English and often associated with or miscontrued as social housing) is a self-contained housing unit (a type of residential real estate) that occupies only part of a building. Such a building may be called an apartment building, especially if it consists of many apartments for rent. Apartments may be owned by an owner/occupier or rented by tenants (two types of housing tenure). The term apartment is favored in North America, whereas the term flat is commonly, but not exclusively, used in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and most Commonwealth countries. In Malaysian English, flat often denotes a housing block of lesser quality meant for lower-income groups, while......

Case Study

...Case Study 1 5/10/2012 Top Quality Architects, LP My company, Top Quality Architects has just recently won a bid to construct a high rise residential apartment building. Before we get started there are a few considerations to take a look at during the beginning of this new project. The location that the construction will take place borders a high crime urban area. When we construct this building we want our residents to feel safe while living here whether they are parking their vehicle or just exiting or entering the apartment building. Our design will not include ground floor apartments simply because we feel that there is no security and public to private entrance will only increase the possibility of a crime to happen. In order to do this we would have to apply the crime prevention through environmental design concept. Crime prevention through environmental design or CPTED reduces the opportunity of crime occurring. We know that it is impossible to mitigate crime permanently so we take every precaution we can to reduce it by a large percentage. To be effective and truly implement the CPTED principles, the design factors must be blended with the social (human) factors of the environment. This blend requires the involvement of trained and dedicated individuals, (a mix of government, neighborhood, and business representatives) from its design through it use, individuals from very diverse disciplines coming together to design an environment for......

She only assumes and thinks that her assumptions are always right.” For a daughter, her mother should and must not be questioned, therefore, everything was kept to herself. There was no one who she can share her feelings with. Slowly, everything she kept build up and became something she can’t avoid- hatred. She need not be compared to her all-rounder brother. She need not be someone worthy only of her father’s love. Yet, it happened. Life was unfair but she still accepted it with an open mind with doubts if she should do so. When she reached the tuition centre situated on the third floor, she straight away went to the back of the building instead into her class. She could not face her friends. Ever so many times, she thought of running away. All sorts of feeling she experienced and then, she thought of SUICIDE. After all, she was standing at a high-rise building where she could see a part of the city she lived in for the past four years. Confused, she was. Yet, it was already decided. She climbed over the bars. She braced herself and gathered all the courage she had. She let go of the bars a finger at a time and let herself fall with her eyes shut. The wind caressed her pale face, running through her hair. “Thump!” and that was all that was heard. Perhaps someone must have saw her......

...Thesis Statement: There are several features that make a city difficult for living well and three of the typical features are: putting cars in the center of urban life, making a city too smart and building too many high-rise buildings. What makes a city unlivable? For the first point, urban construction should accommodate human beings rather than the cars because the city’s main function is to human habitation. According to the reading, some residents oppose the planner’s suggestion that connect those cul-de-sacs in Mimico with a new road running nearby the lake as a result of the considering, this plan seems that everyone can come into their backyard and disturb their quiet life. Actually, a good traffic plan for a city should be used in reducing auto dependence and enhancing transit and walkable neighborhoods. Those poor planning will create places which discourage physical activities so that the bill will be paid in the form of reducing quality of life, and choking pollution and congestion. Consequently, a budding city must make shorter commutes, public transport, walking, and bicycling its top priorities if it wants grows healthily. The second point refers to the high-tech that applied in city's plan with the purpose of serving the people rather than controlling the life of people. Following the development of technology, the smart city's computers can do more than programming traffic. It will calculate where offices and shops can be laid out efficiently, where people......
