Will Humans Fall In Love With Robots?

In the book Alone Together, written by Sherry Turkle, there are many points brought up about how Artificial Intelligence has improved and how it has been used in the form of Robotics. What Turkle is really talking about in this book is the possibility of relationships with these advanced robots. Many people think that it is impossible to ever love robots. This statement in my opinion is totally false. I feel like it is totally possible for a human to love a robot. I believe it is highly possible in the near future when artificial intelligence is able to almost replicate the human brain. I don’t think the people that say that is impossible take in the fact that there is a possibility that in the future robots will help or even replace humans when it comes to childcare. That is when human will start to become used to robots and even start building relationships. In Alone Together, Turkle expresses her concerns when she says, “In the case of children, I am concerned about their getting comfortable with the idea that a robot’s companionship is even close to a replacement for a person.”(pg. 65) Once robots are introduced to a younger generation and that generation has become used to the idea of robots there will definitely be relationships between humans and robots. Many people have had relationship problems to where they feel uncomfortable being with another human being. Some have had spouses that have passed away early. Some people don’t even want to pursue a relationship with another human. That is why in the future robots will be a very viable option for these types of people because the robot would be better than nothing to a lot of these people. Again Turkle states, “that if your lover were a robot, you would always be the center of the universe. A robot would not just be better than nothing or better than something, but better than anything.”(pg. 64) If you look into the future with that quote in mind, I feel like many people who held the opposing view would then somewhat consider the real possibility of loving robots. One of the most popular reasons why so many people say that it will be impossible to love robots is many people do not believe that we will not have the technology to program the robot to function like a human being. They believe that it is impossible to recreate an emotional state of mind within a robot. Although artificial intelligence isn’t that advanced at this point in time, I would expect it to be available in the near future. One of the greatest examples of advancing artificial intelligence is in videogames. Only about 25 years ago artificial intelligence was introduced into video games. Then videogames only really contained enough power to allow A.I. to solve very minor problems. These minor problems were like which way a ball bounces of a paddle when hit in a certain area. Now videogames are extremely advanced. A.I. in modern videogames do the same thing it has done for many years but also more. Now not only does A.I. solve very minor problems but also very large ones. Now in games you can make one user decision and the artificial intelligence will sculpt the entire rest of the game to fit around the decision you made. It’s very surprising and impressive to see how advanced an entertainment device has become. It would be somewhat ignorant to say that there will not be, at any time in the future, A.I. that could express humanlike emotion. The last point I want to make about humans loving robots is where will we draw the line between what is human and robot in the future. Eventually in the future robotics will become advanced enough to be placed on and within human beings. For example prosthetic limbs will become somewhat part of the body. The robotic limbs will function as if someone was not missing their limb at all. An example would be a robotic arm. Eventually I can see where we place chips and even artificial organs into humans to help make life last longer and more enjoyable. The question that the people that don’t believe there is a possibility of loving a robot is, how far can the addition of robotic parts to the human body go before people realize that falling in love with a human could actually be falling in love with a “robot” as well. With all the possibilities of the advances in robotics and artificial intelligence it is hard to say that there is no way that humans can fall in love with robots. Anyone that does not agree on my point of view needs to do a little bit more research before they make their educated and final decision. For me there is no doubt in my mind that at some point in time humans will love robots.

Robots

...ROBOTS In the past decades, many things have changed. In terms of living, social life, infrastructures and cultures. Humans have gone through this massive change over the past decades. In today’s world, robots have been playing a vital role in human’s life. Since the creation of the first robot, humans experience a revolutionary new life. Robots make humans life much easy and simple. In the olden days, humans cannot travel long distance due to time limitations, but now humans can travel around the world with the help of moving machines called robots and then there is a whole new creation of - many in humanoid form, and some that take highly practical forms all their own- which can talk, walk, rescue lives and perform dangerous jobs in extreme environments, or takeover ordinary tasks at home while we are out enjoying our lives. Right from healthcare and homecare, to emergency activities, robots are rapidly becoming a fixture in our lives. Although robots would make humans life easier, robots are a threat to mankind. It is an undeniable fact that robots will take over the future. From the first time we saw a toaster pop up by its own, we have casually accepted that robots can be trusted to do things for us. They record our programmes, prepare our meals, play our music, and even run our cars. We just do not see it because these “robots” do not have a face we can talk to. If we just leave them doing such jobs, soon or later humans will become dumber. "Even if my most pessimistic...

...History of Anime The history of anime began at the start of the 20th century, when Japanese filmmakers experimented with the animation techniques that were being explored in the West. During the 1970s, anime developed further, separating itself from its Western roots, and developing distinct genres such as mecha and its Super Robot sub-genre. Typical shows from this period include Lupin III and Mazinger Z. During this period several filmmakers became famous, especially Hayao Miyazaki and Mamoru Oshii. In the 1980s, anime was accepted in the mainstream in Japan, and experienced a boom in production. The rise of Gundam, Macross, Dragon Ball, and the Real Robot and space opera genres set a boom as well. The film Akira set records in 1988 for the production costs of an anime film and went on to become a success worldwide. Later, in 2004, the same creators produced Steamboy, which took over as the most expensive anime film. The Super Dimension Fortress Macross also became a worldwide success after being adapted as part of Robotech, and Megazone 23 also gained recognition in the West after it was adapted as Robotech: The Movie. The internet also led to the rise of fansub anime. Spirited Away shared the first prize at the 2002 Berlin Film Festival and won the 2003 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, while Innocence: Ghost in the Shell was featured at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. During the 1970s, the Japanese film market shrunk due to competition from television...

The Occult Symbolism of Movie “Metropolis” and Its Importance in Pop Culture

...its Importance in Pop Culture Fritz Lang’s 1927 movie “Metropolis” is one of those timeless classics that withstand the test of time. Rather than becoming forgotten and obsolete, “Metropolis” is increasingly relevant as many of its predictions are becoming reality. We will look at the underlying occult message of the film and the usage of its imagery in the acts of pop stars such as Lady Gaga, Madonna, Beyonce, Kylie Minogue and others. Metropolis is a silent science-fiction movie released in 1927 by Fritz Lang, a master of German Expressionism. Set in a futuristic dystopia divided into two distinct and separate classes—the thinkers and the workers—Metropolis describes the struggles between the two opposite entities. Knowing that it was produced in 1927, viewing this movie today is quite an experience as many “sci-fi” aspects of the plot are eerily close to reality. Metropolis describes a society where the “New World Order” has already taken been implemented and a select elite live in luxury while a dehumanized mass work and live in a highly monitored hell. As we have seen in previous articles on The Vigilant Citizen, Metropolis is excessively echoed in popular culture, especially in the music business. Whether it be in music videos or photo shoots, pop stars are often portrayed as the character Maria, an android programmed to corrupt the morals of the workers and to incite a revolt, giving the elite an excuse to use violence repression. Are pop stars used by the...

Anime/ Bad Influence on All Children Under 13

...Since the 1960s anime has boomed into a world wide label for cartoons. However, these cartoons can be a bad influence for children of a certain age, poor examples for viewers to follow, and has not established any creative guide lines. During the past decade or so anime has boomed into entertainment for many different age groups. From a giant robot battle in space to fighting ninjas with deadly weapons, ninjutsu, and giant foxes fighting giant snakes and frogs, anime reaches out to many audiences. When children under the age of thirteen see this stuff they may attempt to try it them-self, and with no parent to tell them what is real and what is not, then it may be attempted by the viewer. If a child under thirteen reads the manga (anime books) and some one is reading it with them, then that adult supervision can protect them from bad influences that might see. An adult needs to be with the child while watching the anime series or reading the book. Without parental viewing then the child will not know that the violence in the anime, or manga books should not be imitated in the real world. In fact a child died while mimicking Gaara. (from what I know, his friends burried his head in a sand box) this is off of a show called Naruto other anime such as this are know as Bleach, Inuyasha, Death Note has a warning, but is not strong or specific. If a child can imitate this there is no telling what else will happen next. If a child under thirteen watches these shows and does not imitate...

The Origin of Arcee Through a Feminist's Touch

...The Origin of Arcee Through a Feminist's Touch Modern day pop culture has much to answer for. We live in a time where political correctness dictates the necessity of ignoring all our old world prejudices. Yet sexism, racism and all other such examples of outmoded concepts still manage to seep into mainstream culture. For this essay, I intend to apply the literary theory of feminism to showcase such an example of glaring sexism in the origin and back-story of Arcee. Arcee is one of the very few female characters from the popular series Transformers. While there will be examples from alternate storylines, the one I would focus on primarily is the IDW Generation 1 Continuity comic books. The Transformers series has been ongoing for over 30 years. It has spawned various comic books, cartoon series, video games and movie remakes. Unfortunately this has led to numerous re-imaginings and alternate universes of the story. But the underlying theme centers around the robotic inhabitants of a planet called Cybertron. Here a war has been raging for centuries between two factions sharing completely opposing ideologies. The Autobots, who believe in the rights of freedom for every sentient being, and the Decepticons, who believe in establishing peace through domination. Arcee is a female member of the Autobots. Although portrayed as one of the 'good guys', she is nevertheless an example of the pervading sexism that exist in our society. The world of Transformers is comprised overwhelmingly...

How the Media Affects the Asian Community

...Growing up in America with first generation immigrant parents has not been easy, and growing up in a culture where you can’t even see yourself in everyday media makes it even harder to adjust. I remember watching T.V. as a kid and rarely did I see any Asian Americans on the screen; and if I did, the characters were portrayed in a way I was not familiar with. Finally getting a show like Fresh Off The Boat makes it seem like Asian Americans are breaking through barriers and making their way into mainstream media. As an Asian American myself, I happen to see this as a huge deal; finally, there is something I can relate to on T.V. Even though the Asian-American community has been excited and supportive of the series, it apparently does not appeal to the majority, and there have already been rumors of the show’s cancellation. But why is a show as innovative as Fresh Off the Boat being cancelled? The show has so many fans and is considered ground braking in the Asian-American community, but that is not enough to keep the show on air apparently. -As a minority in America, Asian Americans deserve to have their culture portrayed accurately in mainstream media. However, whenever there are Asian characters on television or films, the roles do not reflect the Asian culture, but reflect the stereotypes thought of the culture. Mainstream American pop culture has failed to represent Asian culture accurately in the media, which in turn has left a negative impact on the Asian American community...

...Anime (Japanese: アニメ?, [anime] ( listen); English i/ˈænɨmeɪ/) are Japanese animated productions usually featuring hand-drawn or computer animation. The word is the abbreviated pronunciation of "animation" in Japanese, where this term references all animation;[1] the term may ultimately derive from the French dessin animé, referring to an animated picture.[2] In other languages, the term is defined as animation from Japan or as a Japanese-disseminated animation style. Arguably, the stylization approach to the meaning may open up the possibility of anime produced in countries other than Japan.[3][4][5] For simplicity, many Westerners strictly view anime as an animation product from Japan.[6] The earliest commercial Japanese animation dates to 1917, and production of anime works in Japan has since continued to increase steadily. The characteristic anime art style emerged in the 1960s with the works of Osamu Tezuka and spread internationally in the late twentieth century, developing a large domestic and international audience. Anime is distributed theatrically, by television broadcasts, directly to home media, and over the internet and is classified into numerous genres targeting diverse broad and niche audiences. Anime is a diverse art form with distinctive production methods and techniques that have been adapted over time in response to emergent technologies. The production of anime focuses less on the animation of movement and more on the realism of settings as well as the use...

I Am Legend: Book Vs Movie

...interest in, was the movie I am Legend. The movie is based off of the novel, I am Legend, written by Richard Matheson. Although both the movie and the book follow the same plot, they have many differences .Throughout time, the I Am Legend story has changed due to pop culture and being hip, showing that zombies are not what they once were. In one article by Richard Corliss, “Will Smith Gets Lost In His Legend” it discusses how the role Will Smith played differs from anything he has ever done.Corliss begins with a brief background of Will Smith’s acting career. It talks about previous films like I,Robot, The Pursuit of Happiness, and Hitch. This is important, because other then I, Robot, Smith never played in an action/suspense film. I think this is important because it lets Will Smith be creative with his role as Dr Robert Neville. Basically allowing an actor with almost no experience in this type of work, do his best interpretation of how he thought everything would play out. Corliss speaks on Will Smith’s previous acting roles by saying Lately, though, the most reliable box-office magnet in Hollywood hasn't given himself or his fans much to laugh at. He was a tough, emotionally constipated cop chasing androids in I, Robot, and an ambitious man who loses his job, his home and his wife — everything but his young son — in The Pursuit of Happyness. (Corliss) Then it gives a basic background of the movie “I am Legend” ‘s plot. It begins by talking about the uncivilized life style...

Observational Behaviour and Industrial Revolutions

...How Industrial revolutions have helped in the development of OB as a new science. Though human relationships have existed since time immemorial, the branch of knowledge dealing with them is relatively recent. Prior to the industrial revolution, people worked in small groups and had simple work relationships. They were, however, subjected to unhealthy working conditions and scarcity of resources, so they hardly had any job satisfaction. During the early stages of the industrial revolution, the conditions of workers showed no signs of improvement. But as increased industrial activity led to greater supply of goods, wages, working conditions, and level of job satisfaction gradually improved. The Industrial Revolution "When you could have the visual demonstration that, instead of a pecuniary lost, a well oriented attention to form the character and increase the commodities of those who are entirely at your service, will increase essentially your earnings, prosperity, and happiness, no reason, except those based on the ignorance of the own good, could in the future impede you to pay the greatest attention to the living machines you use; and by doing so you will impede an accumulation of the human misery, of which now is hard to have an adequate idea." Speech to factories' supervisors Robert Owen, 1813 As we have seen, already since beginnings of the mechanization there was people who got worried about the "living machines". In this speech for the managers of factories of that...

One of his radical music was East, composed in the year 1972. It was totally different from the traditional techniques at that time. It had slow glissandos and the performers sung and hummed on top of playing the instruments. Generally, Murray employed his compositional creativity to challenge his listeners as well as the performers of his music. The spice girls joined the Pop music in the 90s and became successful.
