Role Model Review- Oprah Winfrey

When asked to write a Role Model review I knew exactly who I wanted to write

about and then I read the instructions that it had to be someone that was relatively well

known. This made this assignment a little harder for me and a little more challenging.

When going through and looking at other people that I could use as a Role Model I

chose to do it on Oprah Winfrey. I picked Oprah because she is a person that is always

looking to help someone out that is in need of help no matter what the conditions are that

she has to deal with in the enviroment to get these people the help they need. In this

review I am hoping to tell you a little about Oprah and her beliefs and what I feel her

Worldview is.

Oprah Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954 and lives in Montecito CA. She lives

with her partner Stedman Graham. Oprah is an American media proprietor, talk show

host, actress, producer and philanthropist. She is best known for her multi award winning

talk show. The Oprah Winfrey show was the highest ranked show of its kind and was

nationally syndicated from 1986-2011. (Press Release, 2004) She is now owner and

CEO of the Oprah Winfrey Network. During her life as a Actress she was in the movie

The Color Purple, the movie Beloved. She did documentaries and movies for HBO. She

was also the voice for Gussie the Goose in Charlotte’s Web and also the voice Judge

Bumbleden in the Bee Movie. This is just a few of the movies she was in.

About Oprah’s beliefs that I did not realize until I did research on her for this paper.

she comes across as a Christian that want to help everyone in need and enjoys giving to

the needy. But after researching her a little more

...stored in the muscles and the liver in the form of glycogen. Once these glycogen stores are filled up, any extra gets stored as fat. Glycogen is the source of energy most often used for exercise. It is needed for any short, intense bouts of exercise from sprinting to weight lifting because it is immediately accessible. Glycogen also supplies energy during the first few minutes of any sport. During long, slow duration exercise, fat can help fuel activity, but glycogen is still needed to help breakdown the fat into something the muscles can use. Adequate carbohydrate intake also helps prevent protein from being used as energy. If the body doesn’t have enough carbohydrate, protein is broken down to make glucose for energy. Because the primary role of protein is as the building blocks for muscles, bone, skin, hair, and other tissues, relying on protein for energy (by failing to take in adequate carbohydrate) can limit your ability to build and maintain tissues. Additionally, this stresses the kidneys...

Huhthe Role of Celebrity Endorsements in Politics:

Prior to the 2008 Democratic Presidential Primary, Barack Obama was endorsed by Oprah Winfrey, a celebrity with a proven track record of influencing her fans’ commercial decisions. In this paper, we use geographic differences in subscriptions to O! – The Oprah Magazine and the sale of books Winfrey recommended as part of Oprah's Book Club to assess whether her endorsement affected the Primary outcomes. We find her endorsement had a positive effect on the votes Obama received, increased the overall voter participation rate, and increased the number of contributions received by Obama. No connection is found between the measures of Oprah's influence and Obama's success in previous elections, nor with underlying local political preferences. Our results suggest that Winfrey’s endorsement was responsible for approximately 1,000,000 additional votes for Obama. Anorexia

...not know exactly what the causes are of anorexia, or other eating disorders for that matter. They say eating disorders can be caused by many things such as: biological, psychological, social, cultural and even family factors (Gowan). For many of the sufferers, anorexia becomes almost like a religion. People feel this way because, they have power over themselves. They control what they can eat and they feel in power when they do this (Bennett). A story I found off of ebsco, (academic resource website) was a girl who dreamed of being a ballerina. She saw many dancers who were thin and good at dancing and that’s what she wanted to be like. This girl was only 15 years old when she started to starve herself. It was all because of a role model she looked up too. This girl lost 30 pounds and she still didn’t think that she had any problems. She wouldn’t admit to anorexia. Most people with the disease don’t admit to it because they feel that they don’t have a problem. Finally after a year, she...

Relational Leadership

...Running Head: In Support of Relational Leadership In Support of Relational Leadership By Gail S. Pasley Submitted in partial fulfillment of The requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts Human Resources Development Under the direction and Guidance of Dr. Barbara Seifert, Ph.D. Human Resources Professor Webster University Orlando Metropolitan Campus April 12, 2011 In Support of Relational Leadership What does Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King, Jr., Margaret Thatcher or John F. Kennedy have in common? The answer appears to be obvious—they are great leaders who possess great intellect, persuasive ability, charisma, etc. And, most of us would even dare to say that Adolph Hitler and Osama Bin Laden were also great leaders—after all, look at the empires they built, and the great following they commanded. Jim Jones, leader of the People’s Temple was hailed by many as a great spiritual leader until he led a “revolutionary suicide”, that became known as the Jonestown Massacre in 1978, which left nine hundred and eighteen people dead (Rosenberg, para. 1). What separate these two groups of leaders from the other? What truly makes a great leader? Or is the idea of the great leader, in the words of Levi and Ritti (2002), “one of America’s most cherished myths.” Even with this assertion Levi and Ritti do not totally deny the influence of leadership in the success of an organization, but cautions that it is challenging to measure its efficacy because...

LGBT ,Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, youths struggle with acceptance of their sexuality from friends and friends, school, society, violence, the work force, religion, suicide. The choice of turning all those subjects away has been a solution to many of the cases on these people. Depending on the family of the individual, they may be turned down for the rest of their lives or given the chance to still be involved with them. It all depends on whether the family is traditional. Tradition is when all the sons, daughters, aunts, and uncles that have a straight orientation. Everyday Life The LGBT community faces many challenges in their everyday life like voting, sexual talks, and segregation. In the early nineteen hundreds, the people who campaigned for elections did not let the LGBT community vote because they did to feel that they were equal to the heterosexual man. ...however, we will not plunge into problems and issues; instead we consider some important preliminaries. We first look at the economic perspective—how economists think about problems. Next, we examine the specific methods economists use to examine economic behavior and the economy, including distinguishing between macroeconomics and microeconomics. We then look at the economizing problem from both an individual and societal perspective. For the individual we develop the budget line, for society the production possibilities model. In our discussion of production possibilities, the concepts of opportunity costs and increasing opportunity costs, unemployment, growth, and present vs. future possibilities are all demonstrated. Finally, in the Last Word, some of the problems, limitations, and pitfalls that hinder sound economic reasoning are examined. The Appendix to Chapter 1 provides an important introduction to graphical analysis. While this will be review material for most students, for some this may be new. Instructors are strongly urged to confirm that their students understand this section before proceeding. The software supplement can provide effective remedial help for those students who are not familiar with graphical analysis, or just need a refresher. WHAT’S NEW There is a new learning objective for this chapter: Explain the individual’s economizing problem and how trade-offs, opportunity costs, and attainable combinations can be illustrated with budget lines. ...

These children, of course, are often the ones who are most difficult to educate, and the ones neighborhood public schools can't turn away. You also don't learn that in the Finnish education system, much cited in the film as the best in the world, teachers are—gasp!—unionized and granted tenure, and families benefit from a cradle-to-grave social welfare system that includes universal daycare, preschool and healthcare, all of which are proven to help children achieve better results at school. In other words, Waiting for Superman is a moving but vastly oversimplified brief on American educational inequality. Nevertheless, it has been greeted by rapturous reviews. Gender

...Sex Roles: A Journal of Research, May 1997 v36 n9-10 p551(22) Advertising's effects on men's gender role attitudes. Jennifer Garst; Galen V. Bodenhausen. Author's Abstract: COPYRIGHT 1997 Plenum Publishing Corporation We posited that media images of men influence the gender role attitudes that men express soon after exposure to the images. A total of 212 men (87% European American, 7% Asian or Asian American, 3% African American, and 3% other) viewed magazine advertisements containing images of men that varied in terms of how traditionally masculine vs. androgynous they were and whether the models were the same age or much older than the viewers. Men who had initially been less traditional espoused more traditional attitudes than any other group after exposure to traditionally masculine models, although they continued to endorse relatively nontraditional views after exposure to androgynous models. These findings suggest that nontraditional men's gender role attitudes may be rather unstable and susceptible to momentary influences such as those found in advertising. Down Syndrome: Observing Shannon

...Down syndrome: Observing Shannon Submitted by: Alfonse Bowman Arcadia University ED 584: Supporting Students with Low Incidence Disabilities Professor Hopkins Fall 2013 Introduction For our final paper I chose to research trisomy 21 or as it is known clinically, Down syndrome (DS). The primary reason I chose this low incidence disability is because I will make the transition from a regular education teacher to a special education teacher in the spring and I am already familiar with other low incidence disabilities. I realize that with my new role in a self-contained classroom it is important for me to understand the term Down syndrome and then see how the definition and behavioral traits impact the student, the teacher and the other students in an educational setting. This research paper will provide clinical and anecdotal information on DS with real-life observation of a student with Down syndrome. History of Disorder According to the National Down Syndrome Society (2013), during the early nineteenth century, John Langdon Down, an English physician, published an accurate description of a person with Down syndrome. It was this scholarly wok, published in 1866, that earned Down the recognition as the “father” of the syndrome. Although other people had previously recognized the characteristics of the syndrome, it was Down who described the condition as a distinct and separate entity. The United States Department of Health and Human Services Center for Disease Control...
