The Iran-Contra Affair, the United States sold weapons to Iran for use in their war with Iraq. Reagan did this despite an embargo against Iran( imposed after the 1979 hostage crisis) and the fact that Iran was at an avowed enemy; the United States was t the same time offering support to Iran because top official in the Reagan administration hoped that selling arms to Iran would ease relation between the United States and Iran. More damning is that members of Reagan ‘s administration took profits from the sales of arms to Iran and sent the money to a right wing guerrilla group in Nicaragua called the Contras, who were battling the left wing government. It was never proved that Reagan was aware that Iran arms sale finds had been diverted to the contras, but the nationally televised testimony of Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North demonstrated that Reagan was probably not aware of the contra affair and that he had not, therefore, sufficiently controlled his administration. At, Reagan behest, Congress investigated the affair, chastised the president, and indicted several of his men. Dr. Morris is also the associate minister at St. John's United Methodist Church in Memphis. Dr. Morris’s ministries provide health care for the working poor and uninsured in Memphis and promote both a healthy physical body and a healthy spiritual body. Such a perspective deteriorates expectations for students and weakens educators’ abilities to recognize giftedness in its various forms (Ford & Grantham, 2003). The most devastating brand of this sort of deficit thinking emerges when we mistake difference—particularly difference from ourselves— for deficit. If one concentrates best while sitting still it may be difficult to imagine that somebody else—a student or colleague, perhaps—concentrates more effectively while pacing or tapping a pencil. Similarly, if one always has lived among people who speak a certain language variation, such as what people commonly refer to as “standard English,” she or he might mistake somebody’s use of a different variation, such as the Appalachian variety spoken by my grandmother, as an indication of intellectual inferiority or, worse, deviance (Collins, 1988).
