Blaine - He was from Maine and was a radiantly personable congressman with an elastic conscience. Blaine was one of the late 19th century's leading Republicans and champion of the moderate reformist faction of the party known as the "Half-Breeds". c) Burly “Boss” Tweed – He employed briery, graft, and fraudulent elections to milk the metropolis of as much 200 million dollars. Tweed’s luck ran out when the New York Times discovered evidence in 1871 and published. He then died behind bars. d) Democrats – They had a solid electoral base in the south and in the northern industrial cities, teeming with immigrants and controlled by well-oiled political machines. e) Republicans – Their strength laid largely in the Mid-West and the rural and small-town Northeast. There are always two sides to a story, two opinions to be heard, and during the late 19th Century, there were definitely two sides to the issue of Imperialist Expansion. From Messages and Papers of the President, in 1898 President William McKinley addressed Congress with a call to war against Spain, in an effort to expand American influence in Cuba. Conversely, the 1899 Platform of the American Anti-Imperialist League was published to dissuade not only the public, but the Senate as well, from supporting American Imperialism. Primary sources are vital historical resources that provide a real look into a situation. When analyzed, primary sources can show an author’s motivation to action, or explain an awful circumstance. However, primary resources fail to see the big picture. Secondary sources can provide clues that enable the reader to piece the big picture together more easily. These secondary sources may not provide the exact account of an event, however they remove the emotional bias that can be found in primary sources, and can sometimes link historical events, as they are written after-the-fact. Hayes also implemented civil service reforms that laid the groundwork for further reforms that would be implemented in the next 20 years(Rutherford B. Hayes). Ulysses S. Grant was the president before Hayes. Just like Hayes and Garfield, he fought in the Civil War, he also served in the Mexican-American War. Under his presidency, African Americans were elected into Congress. He also created the first Civil Service Commission. The two presidents after Garfield were Chester Arthur, Garfield’s vice president, and Grover Cleveland. Arthur was Garfield’s vice president so when Garfield died, Arthur took his place. Lincoln’s death changed the course of the country trying to rebuild after the Civil War. President Andrew Johnson was not popular and could not convince Congress especially the southerners to go along with him. Lincoln had a plan to build up the South and end the hate. He ordered amnesty and that the south be rebuilt. He pardoned, with a few exceptions, any southerner who would swear allegiance to the Union and the United States Constitution. His plan was to let the Confederate states back into the Legislature, but it was not working too well. We will never know how that went because he was assassinated. His idea always was to try to “mend fences” and forgive. The entire civil rights movement was set back because of the death of Lincoln. The Railroad The two railroads, the Union Pacific and Central Pacific met in Utah in May of 1869. It was merely ceremonial, but the real occasion was that it meant the railroads now would run from coast to coast. Joseph the Elder (“Young Joseph’s” father) and the other Nez Perce chiefs signed a treaty with the United States establishing a Nez Perce reservation encompassing 7.7 million acres in present-day Idaho, Washington, and Oregon. The 1855 reservation maintained much of the traditional Nez Perce lands, including Josephs Wallowa Valley. The second event was an influx of new settlers caused by a gold rush led the government to call a second council in 1863.” Government commissioners asked the Nez Perce to accept a new, much smaller reservation of 780,000 acres (3,200 km2) situated around the village of Lapwai in Idaho, and excluding the Wallowa Valley.” In exchange, they were promised financial rewards and schools and a hospital for the reservation. One of the allied chiefs signed the treaty on behalf of the Nez Perce Nation, but Joseph the Elder and several other chiefs were opposed to selling their lands, and did not sign.
