This essay will be summarizing most the main and important ideas used in Benedict Carey’s piece called, “Judging Honesty by Words, Not Fidgets”. The audience of this piece would be anyone interested in law enforcement and might just want a summary of Carey’s piece and don’t feel like reading the whole excerpt. For those in the audience who have not read this excerpt it is mainly for the purpose of law enforcers, officers, and even some people who just want to learn the trick of lying and getting away with it. Benedict Carey really wanted to go over the methods of interrogation that have been used throughout our history. Using some research he tried to find the methods that would most efficiently find the true criminals in an interrogation and help out our future law enforcers. When people think of an interrogation some of the first things that usually comes to mind is questioning, good-cop, bad-cop, lie detectors, and two way mirrors. Well these methods have been used for some time now and trying to get answers out of people is not always the easiest. Sometimes cops cannot even tell if someone is lying or not because some people just get good at telling lies. The audience would think that with today’s technology it would be a little easier than what it is. This is exactly what forensic scientists have been trying to do. They are finding new techniques they hope will give interrogators and other law enforcers a better chance to cypher out the criminals from the truth tellers. “With the new techniques being tested they have found that it doesn’t always matter about the body language of the person getting interrogated but more about the content of what the person says”(Carey 11) . Instead of going straight to a suspect and rumbling on about how you think they are the criminal, the officers now try to get the most evidence possible before interrogation. This means the officers go into the questioning knowing exactly what they are going to ask the suspect and they make it less of an interrogation and more of just an investigative interview. They just ask simple questions rather than shove random questions down your throat and expect you to answer them. By trying these new methods researchers are getting closer and closer to finding the most effective way of getting truthful answers. In the article Carey writes, “In analyses of what people say when they are lying and when they are telling the truth, researchers have found enticing differences”(Carey 10). People that are lying usually stick to one story and one story only meaning they have practiced and learned everything they are going to say before they even say it. Honest people don’t know exactly what they are going to say so they have chances of messing up a part in their story. In several studies, Dr. Colwell and Dr. Hiscock-Anisman also found that people telling the truth tend to add 20 to 30 percent more external detail than do those who are lying. This being said researchers are going deeper into these thoughts and coming up with types of interviews to discovery the liars from the honest people. With different forms of interrogation, liars going by scripts, and a new interview method. The researchers are getting closer and closer to finding the key to a successful interrogation. If these new interview methods work it could help out law enforcers around the world to pick who the criminals are out of many different suspects. This being said if everyone works together and the scientists can get answers this world might start clearing the streets of criminals more often and more proficiently. Let’s make this place a safer world to live in.

Technological Advances In Sports Research Paper

...For hundreds of years, competitions between different opponents have taken place all over the world. As we have come to know them today, sports are a mainstay in cultures everywhere. Just as automobiles and computers evolve technologically over time, so do sports. The technological advances of recent decades have changed the way that some sports are played, and has made the overall competition much safer for amateurs and professionals alike. Early days of sports play needed fine-tuning of equipment and rules to become as popular a form of entertainment as they are today. Equally important to sports was the implementation of cutting-edge technology to make the game better for the people that play it. As technology is constantly being updated and outdone by newer, stronger, better, and faster products and materials, sports are no exception to utilizing these advances. From the implementation of new materials in lighter hockey sticks to the customization of wood selections in baseball bats, sports are evolving with technological advances every day. Not only are equipment and safety measures greatly impacted by technological advances, but treatment and therapy garner advances as well. Physicians and sports trainers are implementing new technologies into treatment routines and prehab to allow athletes faster recovery times and greater...

Salaries of Sports Athletes

...of Sports Athletes The world of sports is a multimillion dollar industry. Around the globe, people flock to sporting events or watch their favourite teams faithfully each week on television. As a result, professional sports athletes receive huge salaries – well above, for example, those of doctors, lawyers, teachers or social workers. There is some debate about whether such outrageously high salaries are justified. On the one hand, sport is viewed as a professional career, in which the top players should rightly earn high salaries. Athletes train rigorously from an early age to become peak performers in their field. They face tremendous pressure in each and every game, match or competition. Their personal lives are compromised and they lose all privacy. At the same time, their strong achievements bring honour and attention, not only to themselves, but also to their teams, schools, cities or countries. On the other hand, various professions contribute to making our world run smoothly. Doctors put in at least ten years of grueling study and internship; their work saves lives. Teachers educate and inspire young people to be responsible citizens: their efforts produce the citizens of tomorrow. Social workers rescue individuals facing physical, mental and psychological challenges: their intervention creates safer societies. Yet, professionals in the fields above usually struggle to get by, despite their meaningful and critical contribution to the world. In my view, paying enormous...

Is Environmental Stewardship the Answer to All Our Woes?

...Nature, which has sheltered and provided for us, only greed. It is oft noted that in time of great turmoil, when civilization is threatened to collapse a liberator comes forth to save the world. We face an enemy no less than those faced by heroes whose exploits are immortalized in epics and legends. This time we do not face demons, this time we do not face a single oppressor, this time we face the greed in each and every one of us. The villain resides in us, it frames us, it also gives the opportunity for every man to be a hero. The hero has been given a name, that of an Environmental Steward. The job of an Environmental Steward is at its best difficult. Even at the basic level, regulating oneself, it requires sacrifice and renunciation is always difficult. But it is at this very basic level that we can lay the foundations for change. To quote Mahatma Gandhi “You must be the change you want to see in the world”. The job is also often thankless. There are no songs written about a man crusading to save a local plant from extinction. He will many a times be cursed by the very people whom he is trying to save. What we do receive from this is a deep sense of satisfaction and the ability to dream of a world for our grandchildren that does not include a broken earth. It seems that in a practical world, the force of the sword is mightier than the subtlety of the pen. Resources are needed to bring in real, measurable change. Corporates have the required resources to effect real change in...

Can Snapchat's New Snap Map Summary

...In Angus Chen’s article, “Can Snapchat's New 'Snap Map' Bring The World Closer Together?” the author discusses the positives that come with this new feature. He talks about how this new addition can “foster a global community or sense of togetherness” (Chen 1). By looking on Snap Maps, any user is able to see the world with the touch of their fingers and experience a new culture without leaving the comforts of their home. One issue that the writer does mention with this is that there is a possibility of someone leaking another person’s private information and graphic/violent content. He questions how SnapChat will be able to censor these pictures before it is able to reach the public. However, the writer fails to discuss the negatives that come with Snap Maps. This new terrifying feature opens an invitation of stalking, robbery, and relationship issues that can be detrimental to a community or a group of friends....

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Essay 1 – High Score – Band 8-9 In today's modern world, computers are an essential part of everyday life. Around the globe, children often use computers from a very young age. Although it is important for children to participate in various well-balanced activities, in my opinion, children who use the computer daily are actually developing a critical skill for future success. The bases for my views are personal, academic, and professional. From a personal point of view, computers are an invaluable resource to help young people explore the world around them. For example, children who use Internet to satisfy their curiosity about diverse topics are already becoming independent learners. No child with a computer is ever bored! By starting early in their lives, children feel totally at ease around computers; they are also able to take advantage of the wide range of services computers provide. From an academic viewpoint, children have no choice but to master this technological invention. For instance, when I was in university, students brought their laptops to class to take notes, do research and exchange information. They wrote assignments, created presentations and developed databases. Children who build early confidence and experience in these abilities are at a distinct...

Early Economic Prosperity: Fine China

...Early Economic Prosperity: Fine China For centuries, the common theme of global politics and economics has been focused on the relative prosperity of the West compared to the rest of the world. It’s a trend with roots as early as the 15th century and that has characterized the world we live in today. In the 9th through the 14th century, however, China was starting to become one of the more prominent powerhouses in the world and played a major role on the international level in both politics and economics. China’s impressive strength during this time period insists that certain policies must have been put into place at the governmental level in order to spearhead the country into prosperity. To just credit this success to a more centralized approach than the rest of the world would be an unjust oversimplification of China’s illustrious history. Instead, we must look at China’s emphasis on both technological advancements and centralized business practices as the sources of their ensuing dominance in the several centuries prior to the arrival of Europeans in the Americas. While some say that just a general policy of centralization helped to spur Chinese advancement during this time period, it is actually more accurate to hone in on their reformative business practices as the most probable cause. As Abu-Lughod (1989) stresses, China’s reforms occurred both on a national and a global scale. Within borderlines, one of China’s first steps was to adopt paper money (especially in North...

Pan's Labyrinth

...Pan’s Labyrinth is set in Spain, during 1944 at the time of the Resistance. The setting takes place at a house, known in the movie as a mill, surrounded by the forest. The movie shows two worlds; the real world and the fairy tale world of a little girl, Ofelia. The music in this movie is mesmerizing, as it comes around mainly when Ofelia is present and has to do a task assigned to her that the book reveals that is given to her by the faun, known as Pan. Ofelia is the developing character, because the movie surrounds her in the world of fantasy. Ofelia is traveling with her mother, to go live with her stepfather, when the car has to stop. Ofelia gets out of the car and wanders off, when she come across a stone and picks it up. The stone is a piece of the stone statue, and then Ofelia places it in the statue and a bug appears. The bug later appears in the mother’s room, and reveals that she is a fairy, and there is a close-up of the bug crawling out of the statue. This scene revealed the importance of the fairy as well as the part she plays in the movie. The Captain is a stock character, because he is portrayed as being mean, even to Ofelia. The only reason Ofelia is there at the mill is to be with her mother, who is pregnant with Ofelia’s brother. In one scene, you can see the Captain’s hand on Carmen’s belly, which is an indirective/subjective point of view. In another scene, there is the Captain with his men questioning an old man and his son about what they are doing out in...

The left half is dedicated to metaphysics and the right half is dedicated to epistemology. Now imagine a horizontal line running through the middle of the vertical line to form quadrants. The upper left quadrant represents the intelligible world of being which is invisible, eternal, unchanging, and etc. The lower left quadrant represents the visible world of becoming, which is visible, temporal, changing, and more. What an Education Means to Me

...I simply just say… an education means the world. Education means my future, my life and, my career. As Brian Kaufman said “You get the better job with the better pay. But that is not the reason we should pursue a higher education.” And it’s not because there’s more in life then pay. So education means the things that others couldn’t have. Education means the night’s people read under the lamps that tried not to get caught. Education, things that others got beat brutally for. It means I have a chance to climb to the top. It means I get to prove the ones who downed me wrong. Education gives me the chance to make the ones who desired it proud. Education means I have a future. Education means I’m capable of a healthy living life. Without education I couldn’t read nor write this paper. Education means I have a chance. To know I have a shot to aim at my goal makes me overly excited. To know I can be anything I want with nobody stopping me makes me feel in charge. It’s not up to fate because it lies in my hand. It depends on me and what I choose. Education means that I determine who I’m going to be. It’s not like a dice that has to be rolled. It’s me and my decisions. So as you see Education means the world to me. This is because when we get older we will be in charge. We will be the ones who are placed in business. We would be the ones to now represent. We would be the ones helping those who helped us. So education means the world to me. << What Higher Education...

Algory

...they have nothing to look at but shadows casting on the wall that are provided by another. This is all that they know, have experienced in cave and have never been out of the cave. That tells nothing on the surface, but once one looks really hard a few messages or meanings can be explained from the Allegory. The main point of the Allegory of the Cave is to give an example of the way that we all live our lives. The remainder of the Earth's inhabitants see what we think is reality when actually it is, the shadows of true reality. The Shadow makers represent the opinions makers, or the people that make us look at the world the way we do. An opinion maker can be anyone, a priest telling you how God wants you to live, ones parents teach them morals or the television. These shadows make us think that this is the way to live and that this is what is important in the world. As stated before, few can break the chains and escape the cave. When they do and find out what true reality is, most come back and want to tell the truth. In most cases these people are looked down upon for not conforming or for trying to poison the minds of others. Look at Socrates, he was crucified for trying to teach. The main point of the Allegory is to illustrate the way in which we live and show how what we think is realities merely are shadows. I seem to think there is another meaning to the Allegory of the Cave. I agree with the interpretations of the story up to a point. The part where my believes differ is...
