Saint Dymphna
Feast: May 15
Died: 650 Saint Dymphna was born in Ireland in the 7th century. When Dymphna was 14 years old, her mother died. Damon, Dymphna's father, loved his wife deeply and did not do well after she died. He felt he needed to find a woman that resembled his deceased wife and sent his soldiers to find her anywhere in the kingdom. Unfortunately, no woman could be found, so he started to desire Dymphna because of how much she looked and acted like her mother. When Dymphna found out her father's sick plan she was afraid and asked for help. Saint Gerebernus told her she should leave and he helped Dympna leave home. They and two others took a ship to Antwerp. They walked through the forested country until they reached a small chapel dedicated to Saint Martin which is now known as Gheel. They had traveled 25 miles. They settled there to live a very simple life. For several months they lived quietly and Dympna became known for her kindness. Dympna's father would not forget her and sent his troops out to find her. They found her because she was using coins from her kingdom and they traced them to Antwerp. When they found her they brought the King to her and he told her she had to return and be his wife. When she said no the king ordered that she and Gerebernus are killed. The king's men killed the priest and the other people refused to kill Dympna. So the angry and insane the king struck off her head with his own sword. She was only 16 years old. After her death she and her friends were buried near where they died. She became of interest to people after epileptics, insane peoples and people they felt were under evil influences who had visited their grave were cured. In the 13th century, a bishop of Cambrai, had her biography written by a man named Pierre. This has helped make her the patroness of the mentally ill. The city of Gheel has been known for caring for people that are mentally ill. They had a special place built in the 13th century and it has become one of the best hospitals in the world for mentally sick patients. The patients are taught to live good lives and work with farmer and other people of the city to share a regular family life. Saint Dympna is the patron saint for mental illness of all types, asylums for the mentally ill, nurses of the mentally ill, sleepwalking, epilepsy, and demoniac possession. Her feast day is kept in Ireland and Gheel. In the United States, her shrine in Massillon, Ohio, is next to one of the most modern hospitals in the world. The Franciscan Mission Associates in America conduct a world-wide correspondence in her name to fund their activities for the poor and suffering, especially in Central America. The body of Dympna is preserved in a silver reliquary in the church named after her. Three churches in Belgium have altars dedicated to her.

...Mirror Mirror on the Wall"...we are more than conquerors through him who loved us." (Romans 8:37) We just can't help it everyday at some point we look in the mirror. To some it is an exercise in self-esteem: we see ourselves and say, "wow, I have a face that others could love!" But for most of us, it is more like an experience in reality: we see ourselves and think, "wow, I have a face that only a mother could love!" Either way, we all face questions like, "Why did God make me like this? Who am I? Does my life really matter? What do others think of the way I look and act? The problem is that we try and answer these questions from Hollywood's perspective- you know- Tinsel town? In Tinsel town everyone is beautiful and life is oh so much better than mine. Hollywood has created a monster called the "world mirror"... run for your lives! As a result, most teenagers suffer from what some call a poor self-image. They don't like the way they look. They think that they are being continually watched and criticized by others. After time and enough glances in the "world mirror" the poison of self-doubt, frustration, and discouragement creeps into their thinking. The real question, though, is not what we see when we look at our reflection in the "world mirror" Rather the true issue is what God sees when He looks at us - and that is a whole different story! The Bible tells us several truths about what He sees when He looks at us, because He is using the God Mirror so let's take a...

Expert in Warefare

...Becoming experts in warfare Praise and Worship (KJV) 2 Corinthians 10:4 (For the weapons of our warfare [are] not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) 5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; “The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God & we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” ( 2 Corinthians 10 : 4,5 ). NIV In the spiritual warfare that every christian believer is involved, several invaluable weapons can be effectively used by him or her to destroy the enemy, however great or powerful the enemy be. Praise and Worship, ( praise & thanksgiving with psalms, hymns & spiritual songs and with other tongues), the Blood of Jesus, the name of Jesus, the Word of God ( Sword of the Spirit), prayers & fasting are the main weapons that every believer can use against the enemy. Faith is one important factor that is significant in the usage of the weapons for without faith one cannot please God according to Hebrews 11:6. “ And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that he exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him”. ...brains were the same size as ours. It seems to me that they were probably much stronger and smarter because everything had to be learned and preservation of sanity and health had to come from themselves. The Julius Work Calendar shows us that they were very much like us in that they lived by a schedule and got caught up in juggling time. It was a bit more structured for them though. They did not have the ability to preserve food and their existence depended on the seasons and how well their crops produced. There was the occasional escape from reality through the drinking of their favorite beverage, Mead or the hallucinogenic properties of the moldy rye in the barn. Life was plain and hard, but it is all that they knew. The saints were basically just the spirits of some really...

...an important part of the Church, their ultimate sacrifice proved they were serious about their faith and showed non believers how real the religion was. Catholics give their lives today in many different ways. Some people completely devote their life to God and become a nun, priest, or monk. Others give their life by giving up their time to help their Church community and the needy in it. 5. The Canonization of Saint Teresa of Calcutta: Canonization behind with the people who knew the candidate best. The bishop has to start the “investigation” and further review by Congregation for the Cause of Saints and the person is declared “Venerable”. Next, God has to preform a miracle through the person, the Church declares the person “Blessed”. With another miracle the Pope “raises the person to the altar” and declares the person a saint. Pope Francis declared that Mother Teresa ‘deserved’ to be canonized. Francis recognized a second miracle in which she was credited with the healing of a man with multiple brain tumors. Besides that I believe Mother Teresa desires to be a saint, she left a good life to do Gods work and help the needy in...

Novena Prayers

...effort to provide reliable information. St. Anthony of Padua was a Catholic priest and preacher during the thirteenth century. Today, he is most often remembered as the patron saint of lost things. Numerous prayers have been composed in his honor, including this beautiful nine-day novena. Instructions 1. o 1 Make the Sign of the Cross, then pray the following prayer, "O wonderful Saint Anthony, glorious on account of the fame of your miracles, and through the condescension of Jesus in coming in the form of a little child to rest in your arms, obtain for me of His bounty the grace which I ardently desire from the depths of my heart. (Chris and I become family and fall deeply in love.) You who were so compassionate toward miserable sinners, regard not the unworthiness of those who pray to you, but the glory of God that it may once again be magnified by the granting of the particular request which I now ask for with persevering earnestness. Amen." Conclude the prayer with one Our Father[pic], one Hail Mary and one Glory Be in honor of St. Anthony. Repeat this process on every day of the novena, adding additional, different prayers on each of the 9 days. o 2 Say the following prayer on day one of the novena: "O holy Saint Anthony, gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for His creatures made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited your word, which you were ever ready to speak for...

Virgin and Child with Saints Jerome

...21, 2010   The two-dimensional painting that caught my attention was the “Virgin and Child with Saints Jerome and Nicholas of Tolentino” by Lorenzo Lotto. The painter uses oil on canvas as his media because oil enables the artist to change color, texture, or the form of the figures at any time. And you can see how important the use of oil was to effectively impact the responses from the audience to see many details of the painting and make a conclusion of what the painting is conveying to the individual viewer or to the masses. I couldn’t keep my eyes away and at first I couldn’t pinpoint why Lotto’s painting was striking a profound cord in me. What made it so easily noticeable was the vibrant coral color of the Virgin’s dress and the deep pastel blue that drapes on her lap. It was if, I had to pay attention to the center of the painting and there I would be able to see a story unfold (a sad dramatic foreshadow for the child).   The foreground elicits cohesiveness among all the figures because each figure is important to each other. Lotto’s arrangement of the figures is positioned strategically and the painting is balanced. The foreground takes up half of the portrait leaving no space for the middle ground and a quarter spaces for the background. The halo which symbolizes sacred figures could be seen over the Virgin and Saints Jerome and Nicholas of Tolentino’s head. Saint Jerome was placed on the left with his head tilted away from the Virgin. His demeanor shows sadness...

Saint

...The Saint that I have chosen to do is Saint Jessica. In my opinion I think she is one of the most important Saints because she tended for Jesus and also she provided for the Apostles. To include, she was also one of the three women who discovered the empty tomb of Jesus on the first Easter morning. This particular Saint has a feast day, and that is May 24th. Jessica is also a modern derivative of Saint Joan. Another idea that is interesting is that her real name is Joanna. Her name is mentioned throughout the Bible, as she is one of the women who was healed by Jesus. Years after she was healed, she was supported by him and his disciples. Interesting enough, she was also the wife of Chuza. Joanna lived in Israel, and one of the most important things she did was give John the Baptist a proper burial and funeral. Things that represented Joanna are an ointment box for healing, a pitcher and a basket for the hungry and the poor. One of the reasons that I chose this particular Saint is because she admired John the Baptist so much, that she gave him a proper funeral and burial. Joanna was also there when Jesus has resurrected and that makes me feel closer to God. Also, I feel like she is a good role model because she was always praying and feeding the hungry and the thirsty. To conclude, Joanna was always close to god. She always prayed and was very close to God and Jesus. She was one of the three women who went to the tomb to find Jesus not there. When he went back into Heaven...

Saint Francis Solano

...The book, Saint Francis Solano, by Mary F. Windeatt, tells the uplifting story of St. Francis Solano’s life from his decision to become a priest to his last words as wonder-worker of the New World and apostle of Argentina and Peru. Born of a wealthy family, he was capable and well educated. He was also very fortunate to have a happy and holy upbringing into a good and virtuous child. Ever since he was a little boy, he longed to be a priest and a missionary. St. Francis Solano’s great missionary accomplishments were truly shaped by his obedience, intelligence, musical talent and trust in God. St. Francis Solano was always obedient to his superiors as a young adult and as a priest. When he was a young man, by his superiors’ decision, he completed the whole course at Montilla’s Jesuit College without complaining, even though he wished to become a Franciscan Friar sooner. At the time he was a friar longing to be a missionary in Africa, he was assigned the position of choir master by Father Guardian. Though it wasn’t the job he wanted, he cheerfully did his best and made the best choir the community ever had. Later, as a vigorous Franciscan missionary in Tucuman, Argentina, he was very happy and zealous in converting the Indians. But soon his accomplishments reached the Commissionary General one thousand, four hundred miles away in Lima, who then appointed him to be the Custos of all of Tucuman. Our missionary saint however, disliked being in a position of authority, but...

Treatment of all offerings The passages in Leviticus 21:1 – 22:16 are concerned with the purity and holiness of the priests and the preparation and consumption of sacred sacrifices. These laws were dictated by God through Moses and are intended for Aaron and his decedents. The priests come from the tribe of Levi; the family of Aaron. They come at a time when the Israelites have been lead out of Egypt by Moses and had settled at Mount Sinai before crossing over to the land promised to their ancestors. God has taken this time to establish many laws and commandments covering many areas of everyday life, human interaction, and what is considered just and fair. In this section of Leviticus, we learn of the laws governing priestly functions and sacred sacrifices. This is a key area of concern for God because the priests are the only people with direct interaction with God and are the spiritual...

Journal Entries An Assignment Presented in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Course ENGL255-04: STUDIES IN LITERATURE INSTRUCTOR: Ms. Dana Allie By Kenya Blackman 22nd January, 2015 Approval…………. Journal #1 Entry: 1 Significance of the Sunrise Have you just ever asked yourself what is the significance of the sunrise? No I have never asked either because it did not seem too relevant in my life. However, I do get up very early in the morning to get to work at six am so I see the sunrise in the car on my way to work. It brings revelation and great joy to see the sunrise I feel refreshed and it gives me a feeling as though as the God that is in heaven is so real that he gives us a sign that he is working where he is. To many people seeing the sunrise is irrelevant because the simple things in life such as nature do not amuse them. There are advantages and disadvantages of seeing the sunrise .To me some of the disadvantages are that you get tired throughout the day when you have a very long day and your eyes can sometimes burn. The advantages however, is knowing that God is real, that God is a God that shows his people that they are blessed to be waking up every single morning. You feel energized and an inner peace rather than waking late your body hurts and half the day is gone at times when you do not wake early to see the sunrise and carry out your day...

Worship

...Worship What is Worship? By definition, worship is ascribing worth to something or someone. But true worship is also a matter of the heart. It must be felt. It can't be ritualistic. It can't be just an external going through the motions. True worship is a heartfelt expression of love, adoration, admiration, fascination, wonder, and celebration. It's something that happens in your heart and soul when you begin to praise God for who He is and thank Him for what He has done. Worship is what empowers followers of Jesus to live faithfully in the world. In worship our minds take in wisdom, our hearts are moved, and our whole beings are called to live out the gospel. People have worshiped, and praised God since the beginning of time. One of the best stories of worship towards God is noted in Isaiah 6, “ In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory." At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke (v.1–4).”  Worship brings an upward look, with one glance at God on His throne with all of His glory. It pulls our attentions off our idols and puts them back of to our God. It reminds...

The Bible

...I was on Mt. Gilead website and I saw a contact link that said how your life have been changed by the dynamic word the Lord gives them to minister. I therefore felt the Holy Spirit leading me to share my testimony. I started visiting Mt. Gilead last year, when I came I knew God had lead me to such a Powerful Ministry. We were invited by a couple that we know that asked us to come and here a word from their Bishop. I was baptized in Jesus Name Feb 11, 1989 and filled with the Holy Spirit a few months later. I was then called to the Ministry the following year. In my youth I was a bible school teacher for children and I also served in the Youth Ministry in my home church for years. In the past seven years it felt like my life has been turned up side down. I woke up one morning in 2006, got in the car with my daughter and she hit a tree in our yard on my side. I ended up having left knee surgery, after a year later while trying to get back to normal I was having problems while walking. Long story short I had to see an Orthopedic Doctor which informed me I had to have an left ankle fushion due to the injuries I occurred. After which it took about three months in a hard cast. While learning to walk again in P.T. my brevious tendon was torn in the same left ankle. I had surgery Nov same year 2007. After which learning to walk again in P.T. it was determined the surgeon fused my ankle lateral, I was walking on the side of my foot. I then had to have my ankle broken and...
