In all the postures and movements of salah, including qiyam, ruk'u, sajdah, and tashahhud a woman should adopt that which is the most modest and concealing for her. At the beginning of salah a woman should not raise her hands to her ears but only to her shoulders or close to her bosom.573 In qiyam, women are to place their hands on their bosoms. They can fasten them in any one of the different ways 'akdh' (grasping) or 'wadh' (placing) described in part two, or they can simply rest the right palm on the left one. Unlike men, in ruk'u, women should tuck their arms into the body and not spread them outward. Our Prophet (Peace be upon him) has said what means: “The first matter that the slave will be brought to account for on the Day of Judgment is the prayer. If it is sound, then the rest of his deeds will be sound. And if it is bad, then the rest of his deeds will be bad.” Apart from the five pillars of Islam establishing good relationships with family and maintaining pure friendships can also help to promote good deeds. Other righteous deeds include being kind to others, being hospitable to family, friends and neighbours, not backbiting or judging others. We should rush to perform good deeds before something hinders us from doing so. Working towards bettering ourselves will help us improve our eman. ...Field Trip 1. I have driven by the mosque many times. It is only a couple minutes from my house. There have been times where I had to drop off my friends at the mosque or pick them up. I always thought the outside was beautiful. The mosque is white, blue and yellow with a yellow dome over it. I come from a church where there are crosses all around the entrance, on top of the church on the doors, so it is obvious that it is a church. When you pass by the mosque you wouldn’t really know what it is because there was nothing distinct about it. So to answer the initial question, the architecture did not lend itself the worship because there was nothing really special from the outside about it. 2. The inside of the mosque are the same colors. It is very bright inside. There was no pictures or portraits of Mohammad. There are a few plaques on the wall and there is a bookshelf of Qurans. The minute you walk in you must take off your shoes. After you take off your shoes, you then go to the area where you pray. The men and woman are both separated. Men are upstairs and the woman is downstairs. Even if the girls do not wear the scarf permanently, when they are praying they have to wear it. Before you pray they have to do something called the Wadu. A wadu is a cleaning ritual done before the prayer. ...Visit to South Bay Islamic Association (Evergreen Location) I visited the Evergreen location of SBIA (South Bay Islamic Association) on a Friday for the Jummah prayers which starts at 1:20. This location is associated with the downtown location. It looks like a newer location and there are plans to expand to a larger mosque. I decided on this location because I was already around the area. According to their website they offer five daily prayers, Jummah prayers, and monthly community events. There are monthly events that anyone can attend including homeless feedings. When I first walked in, I didn’t know what to expect. The building is really new and was not completed yet. I removed my shoes like everyone else and a man at the front greeted me right away because he could tell I was a visitor and he described the prayer and activities that would happen that Friday. Robes and scarves are available for people that aren’t already dressed accordingly. I was told that my arms were required to be covered because I was wearing only a t-shirt. The man offered a robe to me, but I decided to retrieve a sweater from my car. When the prayer started around 1:30, I stayed in the back of the room and observed what was happening. There were Qur’ans placed everywhere and pillows on the ground. People paid little attention to me. People were chanting words I couldn’t understand. Islam's main message is about peace, which comes when one fully surrenders to Allah. In fact, that is what the word Islam means. The practices of Islam are all geared toward attaining this peace. When one really looks into the practices of Islam, the practices can seem quite elaborate even on just a daily basis. Muslims pray five times a day, every day. Once just before the sun rises (fajr), noon (dhuhr), afternoon ('asr), sunset (maghrib), and evening ('isha). Muslims pray a prayer called raka'ah during these five times of prayer. This prayer states that Allah is the one, true God. Through the mercy of Allah, we have been given life and through His compassion we have been given a way back to Him in Heaven through the religion and practices of Islam.
