Computerized Sales and Inventory System

...SYSTEM SELECTION Proper heating and cooling system selection takes into consideration fuel sources (e.g., natural gas and electricity), distribution mechanisms (e.g., air and hydronic), equipment options (e.g., furnace and heat pump), and equipment efficiency. Perform a life-cycle analysis of various properly sized HVAC options to select a cost-effective system. Cost considerations include equipment and installation prices, annual heating and cooling expenses, and maintenance costs. Although more difficult to evaluate, equipment reliability, longevity, warranty coverage, and safety are also important. For example, the heating fuel source directly impacts operating costs. Also, high-efficiency heating equipment often costs more than standard-efficiency models, but it costs less to run. So the life-cycle cost—rather than initial purchase price—may make high-efficiency equipment or one fuel rather than another the economical choice. Some HVAC contractors and local utilities provide life-cycle analysis of various equipment options. A summary of many easy-to-use software products for estimating annual heating and cooling costs is compiled by DOE’s BTS (www.eren.doe.gov/buildings) WHY SIZING IS IMPORTANT A common mistake in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) industry is to oversize heating and cooling equipment, especially air conditioners and heat pumps. Bigger does not always mean better. Overcapacity equipment has a higher initial...

The following information is available to you.  Beginning inventory $100,000  Net purchase 400,000  Sales 400,000  Inventory salvaged from flood 50,000  Instructions  Use the gross profit method for estimating inventory to determine the loss due to the flood, assuming (a) gross profit is 25% of sales, and (b) gross profit is 25% of the cost of goods sold.  (a) Ending inventory = Beginning inventory + purchases - cost of goods sold  Cost of goods sold = Sales X (1- gross profit rate) = 400,000 X (1-0.25) = 300,000  Ending inventory = 100,000+400,000-300,000 = 200,000  Inventory salvaged from flood = 50,000  Loss due to flood = 200,000-50,000 = $150,000  (b) Gross profit = 25% of cost of goods sold =20% on sales (1-1/.25)  Cost of goods sold = Sales X (1- gross profit rate) = 400,000 X (1-0.20) = 320,000  Ending inventory = 100,000+400,000-320,000 = 180,000  Inventory salvaged from flood = 50,000  Loss due to flood = 180,000-50,000 = $130,000  |Part 2 Retail Inventory Method The records of Greene Company report the following data for the | |month of April. | | | |Sales $204,000 Purchases (at cost) $ 96,000 | |Sales returns 4,000 Purchases (at sales price) 176,000 ...

...accounting for merchandising operations -- those that sell products. The products held for sale are called inventory, or more specifically, merchandise inventory. Inventory is a current asset that will be sold to yield a profit--and the adage "buy low, sell high" is a succinct way to state a merchandiser's profit strategy. In addition to introducing a new asset, we also introduces a new cost category, and a new name for the revenue account. The cost is called Cost of Merchandise Sold (also called Cost of Goods Sold by some companies), and represents the cost of the inventory that was sold during the period. If John purchases 100 units of product for $5 each and sells 20 of them for $10 each, John earns $200 of sales revenue. The cost of the units sold is 20 * $5 = $100, and would be the Cost of Goods Sold. The difference between the revenue earned and the cost of merchandise sold is called gross profit. Here is a very basic income statement that computes the gross profit: John's Products |   | Partial Income Statement |   | For Month Ended 1/31/2013 |   |   |   | Sales (20 units * $10) | $200 | Cost of Merchandise Sold (20 units * $5) | $100 | Gross Profit | $100 | Expenses | 0 | Net Income | $100 | Note that 20 units of product were sold for $10 each. The ones that were sold cost $5 each, resulting in gross profit of $100. The balance sheet for John's Products will show an Inventory account, which is located in the current assets, after Cash and Accounts Receivable...
