Childhood. Our childhood plays a pivotal role in establishing ourselves as individuals and discovering what are our motives in life. In Sandra Cisneros’ “Salvador Late or Early”, we can see life through the eyes of a vulnerable boy named Salvador. In this story we can see how Salvador is depicted to be a boy who does not stand out in crowd and does not seem as if he were content with the person he is. The story suggests that a child is unnoticed and insignificant to the larger world. This is also a common theme seen in E.E Cummings’ “who are you, little i”. In this poem we can see how the speaker is looking back on how they were as a child and seems to appear lost at this point of their life. This piece of text demonstrates how Salvador is described as a child who has lived a hard life and is not as fortunate as others which could explain why he remains unnoticed by the society in which he lives in. Salvador also plays a major role in his family since he is the one who helps his mother and brothers, however he is never fully recognized for this. In the text it states, “Helps his mama, who is busy with the business of the baby…”.
