Cultural Review: Gangs of New York

In his review, Roger Ebert gave the film Gangs of New York, directed by Martin Scorsese, a three and a half star rating out of four and made both positive and negative comments of the movie. Although he gave it a favorable review he also said it was “very good but not great”(Ebert). The problem with Ebert’s review is that he does not review the details of the movie, such as the acting or the set or soundtrack, but critiques the movie only as a whole after a long summary of the film. Gangs of New York was a great movie with a couple of fantastic performances by both Daniel Day-Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio, and Roger Ebert’s review did not do it justice. The main problem that I have with Ebert’s review is that he ends with an entire paragraph that compares Gangs of New York with Scorsese’s other films such as GoodFellas and Casino. He says that he does “not think this film is in the first rank of his masterpieces”(Ebert). The problem with that kind of judgment is that Gangs of New York is a completely different kind of movie than Scorsese had ever done before. Ebert is essentially telling us that he likes gangster movies better than historical fiction. I personally do not think that Gangs of New York is one of the greatest movies ever, but I do believe it is a great movie and one of my personal favorites. Bill the Butcher, played by Daniel Day-Lewis, is, however, one of the greatest characters in movie history. Day-Lewis plays Bill perfectly, and his personality is so unique in the film. He is sinister and wicked but also witty and humorous, and he is crazy but smart enough to make others believe he is the voice of reason. Dicaprio’s character, Amsterdam, is also written and played very well. Ebert was right to say that he is “not the most colorful person on the canvas” and that because he is slightly dull he magnifies the eccentricity of the other characters. The one main problem with the film is Jenny, played by Cameron Diaz, who is the independent tough woman and love interest of Amsterdam. It is mostly Cameron Diaz that I had a problem with because she was not convincing as that type of character. When I watched the movie I believed it, but when Diaz was on screen I was watching her act. The other problem is that she is just too attractive. One of the great things about the movie was its authenticity, but Cameron Diaz is just too sexy to be living in the slums of New York in the 1840s. She is also just not the best actress, and with such a great cast surrounding her it was very noticeable. As far as Scorsese movies go I do believe that Gangs of New York is one of the greatest. Ebert did not think it was in the top ranks of his masterpieces, but in my opinion it is a lot better of a movie than some of his others such as Casino or The Departed. It surprises me that Gangs of New York does not get brought up more often in conversations about people’s favorite movies or that Bill the Butcher does not get brought up as one of the greatest villains in film. The movie did not do anything new or spectacular cinematically or change anything about how movies are made, but it is certainly a great story that is told very well with fantastic characters that is entertaining from start to finish.

Once the writers are lucid about the technique of writing an essay and how to write an essay outline, the next step that they face up to is how to move toward a particular research paper topic. And what type of writing works best? Students often complain about a certain type of essay they have been assigned with. It seems to them that writing within essay type boundaries doesn’t allow them to think out the box, limits their potential. But writing a paper without any directions could be even more confusing than the class assignment you got. ...Edinburgh, Drummond Street, Edinburgh EH8 9XP, UK. Email: r.a.howell@sms.ed.ac.uk Investigating the LongTerm Impacts of Climate Change Communications on Individuals’ Attitudes and Behavior Rachel A. Howell1 Abstract To assess the effectiveness of climate change communications, it is important to examine their long-term impacts on individuals’ attitudes and behavior. This article offers an example study and a discussion of the challenges of conducting long-term investigations of behavioral change related to climate change communications (a vital and underresearched area). The research reported is a longitudinal panel study of the impacts on UK viewers of the climate change movie The Age of Stupid. The heightened levels of concern, motivation to act, and sense of agency about action that were initially generated by the movie did not measurably persist over the long term. The results also show that behavioral intentions do not necessarily translate into action. Data analysis raised issues concerning the reliability of participants’ causal attributions of their behavior. This and other methodological challenges are discussed, and some ways of avoiding or lessening problems are suggested. Choose one of the two following types of brief (1-3 minutes) real life communicative episodes (any communication interaction between 2 or more individuals). Do NOT attempt to use a movie scene. a) First-hand experience: an incident in which you met and/or communicated with someone. b) Observed episode: an incident in which you witnessed 2 or more others communicating. 2. Select a theory from those on the schedule prior to the midterm. Choose one that will help you understand your communicative episode and that might also be beneficial for understanding your future communication interaction. 3. Find at least one main academic source (NOT your textbook or lecture notes) that explains the theory. This main source must be published and will most likely to be either a chapter in an edited book or a journal article that provides a thorough explanation of the theory. Crime and the Affecting Factors of the Criminal Behavior

...Crime and the affecting factors of the criminal behavior Prof. Dr. Ayman Elzeiny First : - Introduction to crime : The information about the crime reaches to the public may be through the newspapers , television programs, films, and novels . Some of us have accumulated experience with crime by having ourselves been victims or knowing others who have been victims, some by being offenders (or at least defendants), or knowing such individuals, and others by being occupationally concerned with prevention of crime or supervision of people found guilty of violating the law . There's many difficulties to offer a wholly satisfactory definition of the crime, a word frequently used and a phenomenon often encountered . For the purposes of scholarly study specifically, the amassing of reliable statistics, development of explanations and theories, and preparation of sound public policy a definition more exact than the mental images held by the public is essential . Crime is a by-product of civilization. Most civilized members of society obey authority and conform to the norms prevailing in their culture. Their obedience and compliance may vary in degree, but law-abiding citizens remain within the limits of tolerance. Crime then is a sociopolitical event subject to the definitions of the society in which it occurs. The social response to crime in terms of treatment of offenders is dependent upon the advance of the civilization and the affluence of the society...

...section Vi essay forms Many people use the term “essay” to mean any paper written for a class. In actuality, there are many different types of essays, each of which has a unique purpose, form, and style. We call these different types of essays “modes of discourse,” and they include expository, persuasive, and comparecontrast essays to name just a few. This section of the Guide has a dual purpose. First, various types of essays are described and suggestions are included about how to approach each particular type of writing. Second, the sample essays are good tools for you to see how these different essays look in their final form. These are not templates (no essay can be a carbon copy of another even in form), but they will give you a good idea of what a final piece of writing for each mode of discourse looks like. It would be advantageous to critically analyze the form and content of each sample against the instruction for how to write each type of essay. chapter 21 expository essays Jennifer propp An expository essay explains something using facts rather than opinions. Literacy is really needed to speed up the development or the progress of a country especially in this era of globalization in which technology advance and rapid economic development requires everyone to be competent and to have good skills. Everyone should be literate and be able to read or write at least. In line of this, Hussain (2005) said: “Access to quality literacy learning opportunities and the development of literate environments are essential components of strategies for poverty reduction, equality, economic development and environmental protection, and for achieving democracy. Literacy is a fundamental human right and a prerequisite to the empowerment of the individual and development of society”. It is fully essential to social and human development in its ability to transform lives. For individuals, families, and societies alike, it is an instrument of empowerment to improve one’s health, one’s income, and one’s relationship with the world. Yet when we recall the discussions we’ve had with colleagues about instructor’s manuals over the years, two unnerving comments stick with us: “I don’t find them much help”; and (even worse) “I never look at them.” And, if the truth be told, we were often the people making such points! With these statements in mind, we have done some serious soul-searching about the texts that so many teachers—ourselves...
