As a middle class family having migrated from India, education has always meant security and promise for a bright future where the possibilities are endless. Being first generation born I learned at an early age the value of education and understood the unspoken expectations of my parents and their parents before them. To succeed was paramount, and failure was not an option. I endeavored hard throughout my secondary experience to prove myself as number one and was determined to live the dream my parents had put forth before me.
My hard work and resolve proved most useful as I aced exams, entered the gifted and talented program at my school, and became the role model for my entire family. However, my rise to the top of my family pyramid proved to be part of my undoing when I entered my first year at the University of California, Davis. The first semester began like any other school year for me: choosing classes, picking up textbooks, buying school supplies, and acquiring a new wardrobe. Everything seemed just the same, just bigger and with more freedom. Believing that nothing had changed, I entered full steam ahead into a computer science and engineering major; for which I was severely unprepared and had significantly underestimated.
The grades I received after my first set of midterms tore through any sense of disillusionment I had. I was not doing well in any of my courses and was straining simply to keep up. I found it difficult to adjust to my new environment in which there were no teachers standing on the sidelines cheering me on, no parental intervention ensuring that I was reviewing and studying the material on a consistent basis, and no immediate support from friends who I had known all my life. I was alone. The most difficult aspect of my experience was coming to terms with the fact that the methods and strategies I had relied on before no longer worked. I had to adapt if I wanted not to just survive but truly succeed in obtaining a worthwhile education. My transformation took time, and I honestly resisted at first. For quite some time I held on to my old beliefs thinking that, I could persevere using my tried and true methods that had left me on top before.
Often it is in others that we find it in ourselves to grow and become greater than what were before. My first step towards finding my way back on to the path of success came with the help of a friend I met in Calculus A/B. She shared with me struggles that she was going through that sounded uncannily similar to my own. Yet the difference between her experience and mine was the ownership she took for her actions. I will always remember her words: “Life is about choices that we make—even when we believe that there is no choice. All we can do is continue to making those decisions that will move us forward. There is no turning back in life.”
Her words irrevocably changed my outlook on life completely. I had spent so much time blaming the professors’ lackluster lectures, thinking of how unorthodox the entire college education system was, and denying that there was anything different that I could or should be doing to help myself succeed. If I wanted to succeed, if I wanted that bright future that my parents had dreamed for me, I needed to step forward and grab it with both hands. No one else was going to ensure that I achieved my goals other than myself. This was my education, my life on the line, and there would be no take backs.
Coming to the realization that I had to change was perhaps the easiest part of my journey; amending my previous behavior and effecting change proved most difficult. I spent the better half of that first year figuring out new strategies for success. I learned how to capitalize on new resources and create an environment geared towards supporting the achievement of my goals. I discovered study groups across the campus, took advantage of every office hour that my professors offered, and found individuals who could assist me in tailoring my classes to suit my end goals. I put old habits to rest and formed friendships that would elevate me to a higher standard. That first year at college was the most educational and life affirming. Adversity is the greatest test of strength and builds true character, and the experience I went through that first year set me on the path on who I am today.

Chemical

...chemistry, spectrometer is used to analyze the existing elements in the sample. The basic components for a spectrometer include a radiant source, wavelength selector (monochromator), a radiant detector. The essay is going to discuss the monochromator and the detector. A monochromator is comprised of an entrance slit, a dispersing element and an exit slit. When the incoming beam has passed through the entrance slit, it is dispersed into its component wavelength by the dispersing element. A prism or a grating dispersing element is the most common dispersing element. When the beam passes through the focusing lens, the related spectrum of the wavelengths is selected to be shown on the focal plane at the exit slit. However, a material cannot be used as a prism in any wavelength region in which it absorbs. For ultraviolet measurements, the prism used is usually made of quartz. For infrared region, prism is usually made of NaCl or other alkali halides since both glass and quartz absorb the infrared. (Retrieved on http://chemtech.org/cn/cn212/212-5.htm, Feb 8 2013) Grating monochromator is the second method to disperse the beam. Ultraviolet, visible light and infrared radiation can be dispersed by gratings. The gratings are produced by making a series of parallel grooves on the smooth surface of a material. The reflection grating is usually used in the spectrometers. After the incoming beam passes through the entrance slit, it goes to the concave mirror and reflects to the reflectance...

Mtv Networks, the Arabian Challenge

...Although being known as a risqué channel since its launch in 1981. MTV developed a reputation for being able to provide localized content wherever it goes. However, 2007 was a great year for a tremendous challenge. As experts affirmed, the launch of MTV Arabia in the Middle East was the biggest challenge MTV had faced since its foundation. It was a big challenge for many reasons. First, the cultural difference between the Middle East and the west is incredibly different. Second, the Arab acceptance of a western brand could be tough. Then comes the ambiguity about the success of the localization strategy. Also, the possibility of MTV Arabia to be altered by the local programming could be expected. There is a considerable number of existing Arab music channels, thus, the competition might be difficult as they have the same focus as MTV Arabia. Although those challenges, MTV Networks invaded the Arabian market and applied a business strategy that enabled it to build a solid infrastructure. This paper analyzes the challenges that MTV faced during this process and the strategy that it applied to move forward highlighting its pros and cons. We will also analyze its success and survival in the market. Launching MTV Arabia in the Arab world is the most challenging process that MTV went through. Dana El Baltalji, a special Projects Manager, Trends magazine in Dubai said: “MTV has a penchant for airing controversial material and making a mockery of convention. And of course, it’s an...

Retail Brands

...Macy’s Macy’s zoomed up the list more than any other retailer, increasing its brand value by 62 percent to rank 40, up from 49 last year, according to Interbrand. The retailer’s decision nearly a decade ago to drop all of its regional department store nameplates  — from the Bon Marche in Florida to Marshall Field’s in Chicago – and convert them to the Macy’s brand has paid off, despite ample criticism at the time that the stores would lose their local flavor, Interbrand executives told Forbes.com, in an exclusive interview. “It’s truly validated their commitment to a single brand strategy across markets in the U.S.,” said Justin Wartell, managing director of Interbrand Design Forum, Interbrand’s retail arm. In turn, the department store has honed a consistent, “best-in-class, omni-channel” message via its brick-and-mortar stores, e-commerce and mobile sites, firing on all cylinders with compelling merchandising initiatives, trend-right fashions, and by leveraging a roster of brands that appeal to its diverse shopping base — be they Michael Kors orRachael Ray, he said. Also on Forbes: 10 Comeback Brands Of 2013 Amazon The e-commerce pioneer’s brand value soared 46 percent, climbing to secure the number four spot on the list, up from nine in 2012. Amazon continues to “demonstrate an understanding — in an incredibly intimate and specific way – of how consumers buy the products they choose and how [to be] relevant to those customers,” Jez Frampton, global CEO...

Look for the word ‘essay’ in the dictionary and you will find one meaning listed is ‘to attempt’. An essay is an attempt by you to communicate your arguments or knowledge of a subject to the reader, usually your tutor. The mark awarded is a reflection, not on your intellect generally, but on your ability to communicate your ideas on the subject in question. Many tutors – and students – believe essays help in four ways: Ø They can be a good way to learn. The process of writing will help you clarify your thoughts on a subject or topic Ø They show your tutors that you understand key ideas on any particular subject Ø They are useful as a means of gaining feedback on your academic progress Ø Essays are usually an important part of overall assessment. ...women play an important role. The women are important factors in foreshadowing and in the development of many of the characters. To look at the role of women in the play we must look deeper in to the roles of the only two women in the play; Calpurnia, wife of Caesar, and Portia, wife of Brutus. Both of these women are key in foreshadowing the murder of Caesar. After Caesar's murder we do not hear much of either of them. The main thing Caesar's wife, Calpurnia does in the play is tell Caesar to stay at home on the day of his murder because of many unnatural events that have taken place the night before and because she has had nightmares about his assassination. On the morning of the ides of march is the first time we meet Calpurnia, her entrance is act 2 scene one when she tells Caesar "You shall not stir out of your house today." Caesar decides he shall "forth" until Calpurnia tells him why he shouldn't go to the capitol today. Some of the reasons she included were: A lioness "whelped" in the streets. Graves opened and showed their dead people. Warriors of fire fought on the clouds and drizzled blood upon the capitol. Horses neighed and dead men groaned. Ghosts shrieked in the streets. She than showed her discomfort with these things by saying "O Caesar, these things are beyond all use, / and I do fear them." Caesar says these are just as much to him as to the world in general, but Calpurnia insists that when beggars die nothing happens, but when princes die the heavens are...

... ENGLISH I The JPPSS Instructional Sequence Guides are aligned with the LA Comprehensive Curriculum. JPPSS Implementation of Activities in the Classroom Incorporation of activities into lesson plans is critical to the successful implementation of the Louisiana Comprehensive Curriculum. The Comprehensive Curriculum indicates one way to align instruction with Louisiana standards, benchmarks, and grade-level expectations. The curriculum is aligned with state content standards, as defined by grade-level expectations (GLEs), and organized into coherent, time-bound units with sample activities and classroom assessments to guide teaching and learning. The units in the curriculum have been arranged so that the content to be assessed will be taught before the state testing dates. While teachers may substitute equivalent activities and assessments based on the instructional needs, learning styles, and interests of their students, the Comprehensive Curriculum should be a primary resource when planning instruction. Grade level expectations—not the textbook—should determine the content to be taught. Textbooks and other instructional materials should be used as resource in teaching the grade level expectations. Lesson plans should be designed to introduce students to one or more of the activities, to provide background information...

...GRE Analytical Writing ISSUE Essay Topic - 1 "Important truths begin as outrageous, or at least uncomfortable, attacks upon the accepted wisdom of the time." GRE AWA Analytical Writing ISSUE Essay Sample Solution – 1 “The opposite of a correct statement is a false statement. But the opposite of a profound truth may well be another profound truth.” ― Niels Bohr[->0] This is a proven fact that truth is the initial stage of progress. However, it is also believed that truth always starts away from the traditions and conventions. Therefore, people consider truths as attacks upon their beliefs, which people are following from ages. Truth also means some new facts that are unknown to us. People do not want to deviate from the facts, which they have learnt from their ancestors, and it is true to say that shedding ones dogmas is often difficult. They feel that it is an attack on their wisdom. If we look at the history of the world, we will find many examples where truth has generated commotions in the society. Different people have different views about the existence of God, life after death and origin of earth etc. For example, people took a long time to accept that the earth is round. Religious leaders and clergymen opposed this idea as it was against what they were teaching. Similarly, when Polish astronomer, Copernicus discovered that the earth goes round the sun and not vice versa, he was opposed by churches for many years. In fact he and his supporters were...
