The 1970’ in criminal justice administration were influenced by various national and political events surrounding situations like the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War, and the Watergate scandal. Those were the concerns that brought public mistrust in the government, economic downturns, and social equity to the forefront of campaigns in the public sector. The American public was becoming increasingly concerned with the extent of the damage that the Vietnam War was causing for the troops and the economy. The United States spent an estimated one hundred and twenty million dollars on the Vietnam conflict from 1965-73. Not to mention the estimated fifty-eight thousand troops that were killed or went missing during the war. American soldiers …show more content…
These groups attempting to spark a revolution to advance their specific socialist, nationalist, racist and anti-war agendas. The attack on communities forced departments to implement new techniques such as community policing as well as having detectives and patrol officers working together in teams in designated neighborhoods. The San Diego Field Interrogation study in 1975 revealed that the practice of field interrogations assisted in curbing crimes committed by youths(The Early Years, n.d). When it came to community policing, teams of officers who were assigned to a specific neighborhood showed to beneficial in confronting over concentrated and bureaucratic agencies that had alienated citizens in the past. These community projects were designed for officers to exercise discretion and establish initiatives based on the knowledge police officers gained while working in the communities. The goals of criminal justice system during this era was to provide a socially equal environment for all while attempting to reestablish trust in the government and law enforcement.
