Sarah's Key Character Analysis

Sarah’s Key centers around two central stories of two different characters whose paths eventually intertwine. One is a young, innocent girl, forced into the harsh conditions faced by the Jews whose childhood and innocence are eventually lost. The other is an American-born, French journalist who begins to research the events of the Vel’ d’Hiv’ roundup, opening her eyes to not only the tragic events, but also bringing her to realize her own independence. Sarah is a ten-year-old girl swept up into the midst of World War II as an arrested Jew. She begins the story as curious child, longing for someone to protect her and take her fear away (Rosnay 1-3). One of the first things Sarah does in the novel is when she hides her brother to keep him safe, …show more content…
It’s only hair. Hair will grow back” (Rosnay 81). With Rachel, her new friend, beside her, she also realizes that she is no longer afraid: “She had grown up too much to be afraid anymore. She was no longer a baby” (Rosnay 87-98). Together, Rachel and Sarah manage to escape from the Beaune-la-Rolande. Throughout her entire escape, meeting the Dufare family, and losing Rachel, Sarah holds onto the hope that she will find and save her brother; the hope that she will no longer be alone (Rosnay 132). As Rachel is taken and Sarah hides, she comes out to realize that Jules and Genevieve Dufare saved her life, and, despite her stubborn independence, they do not let her go off to France by herself (Rosnay 132, 142). The audience now gets to see a maturing Sarah, who still has hope but discovers she is not alone. A young girl who is clever and observant enough to get herself of the train by transforming into a typical, happy little girl (Rosnay 149-151). All this hope, however, is shattered in an instant as she finds her little brother’s body in the cupboard (Rosnay 160). After this …show more content…
Zoe is Julia’s eleven-year-old, sarcastic, spunky daughter who stands up for her mother in all situations. Bertrand, on the other hand, despite his charm and looks, is known for getting what he wants, often hurting Julia but later making up for it by “shower[ing] [her] with gifts, flowers, and passionate sex” (Rosnay 42). Their messy relationship is introduced early on as he verbally abuses her, making Julia feel “silly, foolish” for being an American. She starts to question why she puts up with him, a defining question for her character throughout her story (Rosnay 20). As a journalist, Julia is assigned an article on the Vel’ d’Hiv roundup, which she knows little to nothing about (Rosnay 27). While researching, different memories from her past are brought up and the audience learns much of her upbringing, which is greatly different from Sarah’s dark twist of events. Julia grew up in a “happy, sheltered childhood” free from “outbursts” and “scenes” before eventually moving to France on her own (Rosnay 34). Years later, she met Bertrand and had “fallen for him on the spot,” leading them soon to marriage and the pressure to have children. It took six years before Zoe was born due to multiple miscarriages that “left [Julia] distraught” (Rosnay 54). Shortly after beginning her research, she turns to her husband but is quickly shot down

Therminator

...Essay on Essay Analysis on The Movie "The Terminator" For the purposes of this essay I have chosen The Terminator, a science fiction B-movie feature from 1984. Although I intend mainly to study this purely as a single film, I do intend to study Terminator 2 in addition, thus making the essay a study of the series. In addition, I will be contrasting the theory written surrounding these films in relation to other contemporary postmodern theory, and as a result will be mentioning several other films by way of a comparison or contrast. The Terminator seems quite remarkable to me, for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is one of many action films I watched in my early teens; a considerable number of which, like this film, starred the Austrian body-builder turned actor, Arnold Schwarzenegger. What is so different about The Terminator though, is that unlike most of these films, this movie has enough depth and substance that, not only does it still bear watching now that I am older, but it also has an archive of academic theory written about it. The Terminator tells of a cyborg, a human shaped machine coated in flesh, that is sent back in time, from an apocalyptic future in which machines have 'got smart' and acted on their own to destroy the human race. The cyborg's mission is to assassinate the mother of the human's great leader, the man who taught the survivors to fight back against the machines. The woman, a young waitress named Sarah Connor, is protected only by a lone warrior...

Masculinity in Science Fiction: from Reagan to Bush

...masculinity that was popular in the 1980s. By examining the narratives, the characterization, and the cinematography of each critical dystopia, one can see a clear cultural shift in the definitions of masculinity and a growing critique of contemporary masculinity within these films of the early 1990s. Following the Vietnam War, the nation experienced a period of feminization. This can best be depicted in the creation of the “New Man” in men’s magazines; the “New Man” is sensitive, fashionable, and clearly feminized. He also is romantic and expresses emotions. The Reagan years of the 1980s brought a culture that was anxiously fearing its own emasculation. In an effort to combat the “New Man”, Hollywood producer’s created a new type of action character: the hardbody. As Susan Jeffords explains, “These hardbody heroes articulated well with the Reagan presidency,...

Homework

...Homework and Testing 1 Homework and Testing Assigning Homework How much is too much? As with classroom assignments, homework should never be given as busy work. It should have a purpose with a goal. And as I mentioned in the Behavioral Approach to Learning, homework should NEVER be given as punishment. The kid will associate homework with punishment. This may interest you. Harris Cooper (1998) analyzed more than 100 research studies on homework in American schools. He found that homework had a very small connection with test scores at the elementary level. If anything, the more homework an elementary school student had, the more negative their attitude was toward school. Plus it takes away from their social time, which is an important part of growing up. Kids need to learn social skills. Too much homework causes stress, as you probably know very well by now. Kids need to have down time too! Why does homework have such a small effect at the elementary level? One reason is that young children have limited attention spans and are very distractible. It is difficult to do homework in a house that has many distractions. Teachers need to work with parents and help students find a quiet space to do homework. Most professional organization in education agrees that homework should never exceed 10 - 20 minutes per day in grades K - 2. In grades 3 - 6 homework should never exceed 30 - 60 minutes per day. Another reason elementary school children do not benefit much from homework is...

Theology of the Body

...Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body A Cliff Notes’ Version Introduction A. The Theology of the Body is the term used to describe the teaching of Pope John Paul about the human person and human sexuality given during his Wednesday Catecheses in St. Peter’s Square between September 5, 1979 and November 28, 1984. John Paul II says that these catecheses could be called “Human Love in the Divine Plan” or “The Redemption of the Body and the Sacramentality of Marriage.” B. Various scholars, in different language groupings, will generally break the theology of the body found in these 129 catecheses down into four main sections, others six. I think the most logical way to do so is to break it down into seven interrelated sections: 1) The Original Unity of Man and Woman as found in the Book of Genesis • 23 catecheses from September 5, 1979-April 9, 1980 2) Purity of Heart versus Concupiscence: Catechesis on the Sermon on the Mount • 27 catecheses from April 16 to December 10, 1980 3) St. Paul’s Teaching on the Human Body: Life according to the Spirit • 13 catechesis from December 17, 1980 to May 6, 1981 4) Marriage and celibacy in light of the resurrection of the body • 9 catechesis from November 11, 1981 to February 10, 1982 5) Virginity or celibacy for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven • 14 catecheses from March 10, 1982 to July 21, 1982 6) The sacramentality of marriage based on Ephesians 5:22-33 • 27 catecheses from July 28, 1982 to July 4, 1984 7) Reflections...

PREFACE Rationale We agreed to produce the instructor’s manual for the sixth edition of A First Look at Communication Theory because it’s a first-rate book and because we enjoy talking and writing about pedagogy. Yet when we recall the discussions we’ve had with colleagues about instructor’s manuals over the years, two unnerving comments stick with us: “I don’t find them much help”; and (even worse) “I never look at them.” And, if the truth be told, we were often the people making such points! With these statements in mind, we have done some serious soul-searching about the texts that so many teachers—ourselves...
