A Work of Artifice
The poem, “A Work of Artifice” written by Marge Piercy uses many different ways to describe her writings. It begins with a Bonsai tree in an ”attractive pot.” Figurative language is used to show how this Bonsai tree has the potential to grow to great hight and claims it,”could have grown eighty feet tall,” but is instead held back by the gardener- “But a gardener carefully pruned it”. The gardener is used to show the potential of humans and women in particular, can be “pruned” by the way they are raised or by the way others around them have effected them.
The author employs the use of satire is in the title. By using the word “Artifice” she begins to imply something deceptive and cunning.
