Many people do not know the recommended intakes for the kinds of fat, cholesterol and fatty acids, while some choose to ignore them. According to the dietary reference intakes, individuals should have about 20-30% of total calories. For a 2000 calorie diet, individuals should have around 400 to 700 calories of total fat. Total fats include saturated fat and trans fat. Saturated fats include butter, creams, skin of meats and meats such as, bacon, sausage, bologna, ribs and hot dogs. Some of the saturated fats I have are cheese, ice cream and chocolate. These saturated fats have a large amend and the portion of these foods should be minimized greatly. For saturated fats, individuals need intake less than 10% of calories. To help reduce saturated fats people need to reduce solid fats which are pizza, cheese and grain based desserts: pies, cookies, brownies, donuts, etc. …show more content…
Reducing saturated fats is not that hard, if you have a piece of meat and cut off the skin or the borders, it can cut a good portion of saturated fat. Instead of saturated fats, replace these with monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. These are known as healthy fats. Some examples of healthy fats are avocados, peanut butter, nuts such as almonds, walnuts, pecans and canola oil. Others are seafoods, oatmeal, and soy foods. Trans fat are worse than saturated fats. The American Heart Association states to consume less than 1% of trans fat. Some examples of trans fat are processed foods such as chips, cookies, crackers, muffins and cakes. Also fast foods and margarines. Try to consume for vegetables and fruits in your diet instead of processed foods. Fresh foods are much more healthier. Cholesterol should be limited to 300mg per day.
