Save the Internet!

In a country that is all about the freedom of its people, I would think that it would be hard to believe that people are constantly trying to take that freedom away. Imagine my surprise when I logged onto one of my favourite websites and found out that we now have to fight for the right to browse and use the internet in whatever ways we see fit. Cable companies are now trying to make it their job to tell me what the internet is for and how I should use it. In my opinion, that is not right nor is it fair. The internet has always been owned by everybody and allowing cable companies to control what we – as customers – have access to is a form of discrimination. As a country we have been fighting discrimination in many different areas for such a long time, so why in the world would we want to pass something that brings more of it into our lives?

Reclassifying Title II with Open Internet Rules

Title II of the Communications Act has been around since 1934. It kept telecommunications companies as common carriers, which means that our cable providers have to deliver data from source to destination without any differential treatment, and without discrimination. This has given us the right to surf the internet without any restrictions on what websites load and work faster and better than others. However, internet service providers are now trying to "charge content providers to deliver data to customers through a so-called Internet fast lane" (Berkman, 2014). All that means for us is that these providers are setting up a financial arrangement with websites which would allow for the favouring of the content within that website. The owners of smaller websites that they use for their businesses would then suffer because of the fact that they might not be able to afford the fees. Those sites will be slower, degraded, or maybe even completely inaccessible. If we support Title II reclassification with strong open internet rules, then we would then be allowing the FCC to protect net neutrality.

The only people who seem to think that this reclassification of Title II is a bad move are cable and internet service providers. Upon realizing that, I can only draw the conclusion that their entire position on the matter is strictly based off the money. Charging website owners fees in order to be featured in ISPs "packages" will only stunt the growth of entrepreneurs. Cheng (2015), "Internet media companies including Netflix hope to use Title II to close off the possibility of fast lanes." (By any other name). Fast lanes would be used to direct users to sites that are approved by the service providers themselves and cost website owners so much more money if they want to keep their websites up and running. The ideas that these providers have are discriminating against entrepreneurs who are just beginning their road to success. It is cutting off the access that I have to new apps and websites and only giving me access to the people who pay these providers enough money to keep their websites at the top of their list. Although there are some that do not consider this to be an act of discrimination, I have a hard time finding it as anything but discrimination. Giving the general public more access to websites whose owners can afford the fees but less access to websites whose owners cannot is practically the definition of discrimination.

Conclusion

We need to keep the internet free. Just as we have the Bill of Rights that states we have a freedom of speech, we should also have the freedom to use the internet as we see fit. We need to hold onto our ability to browse freely and not allow ourselves to be restricted by corporate regulation. If we are to begin limiting our own access to certain parts and places within the internet, then who is to say that this is not going to lead us back down a path where everything else that we can do is not limited or restricted as well? Reclassifying Title II with strong open internet rules supports innovation. The only reason that we have had such innovation on the internet is because of the fact that these internet service providers have not had control of the transmission of data. Therefore, giving ISPs this type of control can only mean stifling innovation and freedom. That is not something that I can personally support.

...Discuss several areas in which HR can affect organizational culture positively or negatively. HR affects organizational culture by developing and implementing different policies and procedures in areas like, hiring practices, management relations, compensation, and employee conduct and behavior. When the HR departments make decisions they can have a significant positive and negative implication for the cultural quality of the organization. As company executives move up the ladder in the organization they get farther away from the “front lines” they don’t have a strong understanding of the culture. It is up to the HR department to educate the top on what is going on with the culture, so that there is a better understanding. Developing compensation is both a positive and can be a negative to an organization. This is because, the incentive program for sales staff can provide an opportunity to increase their compensation when there is greater productivity. The down side is the sales staff is competing with each other and could lead to deterioration of the team and lower morale. When hiring if the HR department doesn’t pay close attention to the characteristics of the employee they may be hiring an employee that won’t fit in with the corporate culture. To ensure proper behavior the HR department must develop a code of conduct. If a code of conduct isn’t strong or if there isn’t one at all employees will see it as given lip service by human resources could lead to a culture of...

...technological change that has had the largest effect on the life in this country is the internet. The internet has afforded this country many opportunities these opportunities have been positive and negative. The positive effects of this technological change are that it affords the individuals of this country the ability to save time and participate in things that would not necessarily be able to accomplish if you did not have the ability to access the internet. To check if it is turned on, you click your settings (or tools) icon, scroll to safety, and click Turn off (or on) SmartScreen Filter. This will launch the tool that allows you to select whether the setting is on or off. I believe this is a great feature of Internet Explorer 9 and my SmartScreen filter is always turned on. Is Data Stored in the Cloud Free from Prying Eyes?

...is an internet service that provides storage to computer users. Those who use corporate or private e-mail servers do not store their communications in the cloud environment. Important legal rulings highlight the differences between the two ways for storing e-mail. This an internet service that provides storage to computers users who are online social networking websites were you can upload pictures and store messages in your inbox and profile and those who utilize web based email store their sent and received e-mail messages in the e-mail provider’s cloud environment. That is a very good question well I am sure people store data in different locations because you wouldn’t know when your pc or laptop would crush so for some this might be the reason. For other’s am sure it might be in order to hide something that they are doing behind some ones back and this does not mean they are free because at any time someone else might be able to find the information. I think the idea of computer use is being manipulated by some government systems. People should be careful. Due to the increase in technology most companies store their data in web sites and in the data cloud. Those who have the skill and knowledge store their information in private email servers and do not store their information in the cloud. When you store information in the cloud the law enforcement agencies consider e-mail stored in the cloud to be the company that owns the cloud services, often which is the internet provider...

More conveniently, millions of shoppers have fast access to the web from their computers, tablets, and smart phones. Though many customers feel online shopping provides a wider selection and an easier retail experience, many may not know that shopping online can cause them to spend much more money. With more people accessing the internet, easier checkout, business targeting techniques, limitless shopping carts, and ship to store options, online retailers have found ways to get customers to spend more online then they would in in a traditional store. People spend more time online than ever before. In fact, “US adults spent on average 34 hours per month using the mobile internet on smartphones. By comparison, they spend 27 hours on the PC internet. (Sterling, 2014)”. With over 61 hours a month online, or an average 2 hours a day, American’s have numerous opportunities to click on advertisements or wander onto retail sites in between performing daily work, checking email, browsing social media, and other seemingly unrelated shopping activity. This massive increase in internet usage, has contributed to more spending. With excessive exposure to shopping opportunities and marketing, users can find themselves making impulse purchases while surfing the internet and spend money that may not have, while at home doing other activities. ...
