In Island of the Blue Dolphins, Karana is unable to kill Rontu when she killed the other wild dogs. This situation brings many benefits to her and allows her to show sympathy upon other creatures. Saving Rontu adds another dimension to Karana’s life. Karana could not kill Rontu after she saw him hurt, but still alive. In the text, Karana was about to stab Rontu again to make sure he was dead, but she then saw Rontu raise his head. She most likely had compassion upon Rontu and was unable to kill him. Karana then cleaned his wound and gave him water. Over the next few days, Karana was able to befriend Rontu. Saving Rontu brought many benefits to Karana.
