For most people, family is the most important thing and they would do anything to protect them and family usually wouldn't be ashamed of their own disabled child or sibling, but that isn't the case in this story. “The Scarlet Ibis” was written by James Hurst. Hurst writes the story through the Narrator's the perspective, when he is much older and is thinking of his brother. The main character in the story is Doodle and he is unable to walk. Doodle was born disabled and no one should be ashamed of him because he was born that way. Doodle’s brother thought about killing him because of his disability. The Narrator couldn't bare the fact that his brother was born disabled, he must have thought that things would be better if he had just killed Doodle. The Narrator is to blame for Doodle's death because of his pride, immaturity and his forcefulness. …show more content…
The Narrator says, “I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who couldn't walk”(353). This implies that he is egocentric and let pride consume him. The Narrator says, “ I ran as fast as I could, leaving him far behind with a wall of rain dividing us, soon I could hear his voice no more”(361). He ignored Doodle and kept running, his pride prevented him from seeing who he really was. He was ashamed to be around Doodle and of being his brother. Secondly, the Narrator was immature. The Narrator says, “Doodle only walked because I was ashamed of having a crippled brother”(359). He did not do it for his brother, he only did it for himself, so that he wouldn't be as embarrassed by Doodle’s disability. The Narrator says,” One day I took him up to the barn loft and showed him his casket, telling him how we all believed he would die”(353).
