Life is hard for everyone at some point, but life was especially hard for doodle in “the scarlet ibis” and Simon in Simon birch because they were both physically disabled; however, they both handled their situations bravely. For example, Doodle was born with a weak heart and couldn’t walk. This was proven when in the story scarlet ibis doodle was born in like a manger and his family said he was a disappointment. Doodle accepted himself but no one else did. He accepted he was special needs. Next, although Simon was not institutionalized, he was picked on for being short and disabled. All he did was back talk the people he didn’t like their comment because everyone picked on him. At the time no one accepted disabled people so they were mean to …show more content…
For example, when he was a baby his family never name him for at least three months because they thought he would die. This was proven in the Scarlet Ibis when “everyone thought he was going to die”. Even though doodle’s family loved him they treated him poorly they didn’t try hard enough for him to do things. Next although Simon was not physically confined to a house or institutionalized as the time period might suggest he was the nicest kid but his parents didn’t want a lot of people by him. This was proven in the movie Simon Birch when Simon was sick and his parents didn’t want Joe to see him. Unlike Doodle’s parents who eventually took an interest in him, Simon’s parents did nothing with his son. They let Joe’s mom care for him. All in all, both “The Scarlet Ibis” and Simon Birch reflect the time period and the treatment of the disabled; however, because of the civil rights movement of the 1970’s, if doodle and Simon were alive today they would be treated much differently and given more human
