Over the years the percentage of children becoming overweight has increased by a lot. For instance in 1976 only 6.5 percent of kids were overweight but by 2004 almost 20 percent of kids were overweight. Many schools today are not giving kids enough fruits and vegetables in their lunches which is where a lot of them get their nutrition from. On top of that these schools are offering the kids to buy junk food which is causing many of them to become obese. The U.S. government should change lunches in schools so that they have a more variety of fruits and vegetables and their lunches contain more nutrition. Schools today are allowing kids to buy junk food and many of them choose that instead of eating fruits and vegetables which gives them the …show more content…
Similarly, "Many have criticized this approach, but even in the early twenty-first century, many observers believe that school lunches too often still consist of low-quality foods that are not sufficiently nutritious."(“School Lunch Reform”) Today school lunches still include much more junk food than fruits and vegetables which kids should be getting every day.
Schools should be given more more by the government so that they can provide more nutrition-rich food. For example, "He continues, "And, of course, we should immediately increase subsidies for school lunches so we can feed our youth more real food."(“School Lunches: Will new federal nutrition guidelines for school lunches make children healthier?”) This quote proves that the government should change school lunches so that the children get the nutrition they need.
On the other hand if schools no longer serve kids these foods they can always find ways around it. Due to kids becoming used to having junk food for lunch if they were to stop these kids could always bring their own. Such as, "Students will circumvent the ban anyway, by getting junk food at stores or eating it at home." Even if schools banned junk food kids could still get it from a

...School Lunches Remember those school lunches that they used to provide for us throughout elementary all the way up to high school, and if they did not they were about $2.50 a meal. Some kids hated them, others liked them and others just didn’t care as long as they had something to eat in between classes. The importance of school lunches is very high. Many kids always complain about the food, but for some it’s a blessing to them because that’s often their only meal due to their parent’s income. The lunches usually contained a milk, a juice of your choice and a small meal. Breakfast meals varied from cinnamon rolls, to French toast, to burritos, to pizza bagels. Lunch consisted of burritos again, salads, chicken, burgers, macaroni and cheese, chili cheese and beans with crackers or tostadas. And again, any of those meals along with a carton of milk and a juice were only $2.50, of...

...Have you ever been at school, so hungry, then reach in your pockets and only have a dollar? I, personally have done this many times and thought in my head “I wish we had a food vending machine.” School lunches can be so expensive and they continue to rise about $0.30, or 12 percent, every year ( School Nutrition Association 2017 ). Elementary school lunches are, on average, $0.26 cheaper than high school lunches, but each are being fed the same amount of food. Even though 18 percent of 12 to 19 year olds are considered obese, schools should have a junk food vending machine in the halls because kids get hungry during the day, some lunches are too expensive, and more expensive for the schools to provide. Often times in middle school or junior...

...School lunches need to change for the better because everyday kids have complaints about them and even more kids around the world. So it's not just Zimmerman. The school lunches used to be decent until in 2012 when Barack Obama made a law called “The Healthy Hunger free kids act” which prevented unhealthy foods at schools. This helped reduce kids obesity, but the lunches are still gross and bad tasting. Even though they did get more fruits and vegetables the fruits are not fresh at all. For example the apples are hard as rocks and the vegetables taste like they’ve been out for weeks. I think it would be better if the school ordered subway or dominos once a week at least or a better provider because ours is very gross. Not only Zimmerman...

...High school lunches and college lunches are totally different. Colleges are so much better because of the items. I may not know what I am having for lunch until I make it to the lunch room, but it usually never disappoints me. Student card, the variety of food to choose from, and how many times I can eat are three ways that high school lunches and college lunches differ. The first quality in which high school lunches and college lunches differ is the use of a student card. I must always have that student card with me when I eat. Without that student card, I will not be able to eat unless I plan on paying for lunch. They are very strict about it and usually do not let you eat without it. In high school, all I need is my lunch number that I received at the beginning of the year. Just remember that number and you can eat. Longer School Lunches Research Paper

...your school already have a long lunch? Well, schools should have longer lunches because it helps kids relax, it is a lot more healthier, and kids don't waste as much food. There are many advantages for having a longer lunch including students have more time to relax and a break from all the stress that school gives. If you have more time to eat then you have more time to talk, which helps kids relax. Attention spans are dropping among students, and short lunch periods may be part of the problem (Food Service Solutions). Wouldn't you be ready to learn after a 40 minute lunch break? The second reason why there should be longer lunches is that it is way healthier. For example if the lunch is longer then the lunch ladies have more time to prepare the food. Which means healthy lunch, more greens and more fruits. Also rushing to eat doesn't give students time to recognize things like signs of fullness or the way certain foods make them feel (¨Food Service Solutions¨). And the Journal of Academy of Nutrition conducted an experiment on an elementary school. They found out that students eat 13% less of their main...

...their health, especially during school lunch. Schools lunches normally consist of quick and easy options like pizza, chips, soda, etc., all foods that when eaten regularly can lead to serious health problems. Children are prone to these eating habits everywhere and have learned from school. It’s for reasons like this that obesity in children has doubled in the last 25 years. What was once known, as Adult-Onset Diabetes is now common within our youth and caused from childhood obesity. An article from USATOADAY titled “Unhealthy Risks for Kids Tip Scale” explains this, also going into detail about the debate between enforcing healthy lunches for students and keeping junk food in schools. Though fattening foods may be easily prepared, is the timing really worth the lives of our kids? Could a healthier diet at school make for a healthier lifestyle? These questions need answers. Let us begin. In order to get something accomplished, you must involve the government. An article from the Washington Post titled “Junk Food Widely Available at U.S Elementary Schools Despite Anti- Obesity Push” explains this and how federal regulation is necessary in order to enforce healthier school lunches. With childhood obesity increasing, more people are witnessing the epidemic and wanting an end to it. A study by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation highlights this and describes their proposal that would set standards for nutrition and food/beverages sold in schools. Research Topics with Explanation”:

...“Research Topics with Explanation”: Week 2 Assignment 1 Submission Professor English 215 January 17, 2014 Research Topics with Explanation Should changes be made to the regulations for foods that are served in public schools? I choose this as topic one because it made me recall that First Lady Michelle Obama issued a challenge to Get Fit and to put healthier food choices on school menus. The topic makes me curious to know if her challenge was met. The school board, School Nutrition program and parents of school age children are my target audience. A preliminary thesis statement is: Changes must be made to regulate foods that are served in public schools to closer match the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Dietary Food Pyramid Guide. Two credible sources that I would expect to use are the articles “School Food Environments and Policies in US Public Schools” and “Schools change menus for healthier lunches”. Should minors who commit violent crimes be tried as adults? I choose this as topic two because lately crimes of this nature are all over the media. I have never thought about this question. Therefore, I have no idea what position I would decide to defend. I am aware that one should have a strong opinion, thereby being able to make a strong agreement when writing a persuasive paper. However, although perhaps I currently lean towards not agreeing, I am intrigued to learn what my final position would be after conducting thorough research. The general...

Applying the Background and Methodology of the Research Process to Problems in Health Care

...Applying the Background and Methodology of the Research Process to Problems in Health Care Background and Methodology of the Research Process Abstract Childhood obesity over the years has grown by more than 9 million and that number is expected to grow even more. Parents do not always get a say in the way schools are run, but this article has given parents the opportunity to give their opinions on what they feel is important for their children’s health. The researchers in this article surveyed parents on what can be done in schools to help fight the growing number of children becoming obese. Problem to Solve The problem that this article focuses on is childhood obesity. This paper gives parental perceptions of the schools' role in addressing childhood obesity. Childhood obesity has risen dramatically over the past few years. Approximately over 9 million children are obese and that number continues to rise (Murphy & Polivka, 2007). More than ever schools play an important role in a child’s life. Obesity can cause many more health issues if not treated. This can be treated with more physical activity and better eating habits. Unfortunately, more children are doing less physical activities and eating unhealthy foods. Myers and Vargas decided to survey 200 people to get their views on childhood obesity (Murphy & Polivka, 2007). This article discusses how they feel and what can be done to fix the issue. Health Care Administrators This problem is very important for...

...of whale meat (Endo 2003). Currently, a lot of Japanese people are unaware of the fact that so much is being spent on whaling subsidies. Research data by the Nippon Research center (2011-2012) suggests that most Japanese citizens (~88%) do not purchase whale meat (Mulvaney 2013). Moreover, ~47% tend to oppose the use of public money to fund whaling (Mulvaney 2013). Notably, current research polls show that Japanese students are actually in favor of school meat lunches (Bowett 2009). There appears to be a disconnect between the meat market, whaling funding, and the amount the government actually spends to support whaling. If there was a mandatory education class in schools, rather than pushing for whale meat school lunches, we could see a turnaround on the...

Assignment 2: Unhealthy Lunches

...Assignment 2: Unhealthy Lunches Drive-In Don’s fast food restaurant sells the most delicious burgers in town at the most affordable price. Elementary and high schools in the vicinity have contracted with the restaurant to serve burgers during lunch hour. However, the county health department’s one-year study shows that children from these schools have the highest cholesterol, are the most obese, and are the least active. George and Mary’s son, Randall, 12, attends one of the schools where Drive-In Don’s foods are served. He suffers from extreme obesity and high cholesterol and runs the risk of diabetes. George and Mary have sued Drive-In Don’s and the school, alleging that Drive-In Don’s is engaging in illegal deceptive advertising of its foods and is not truthful to customers. Further, the lawsuit states that the restaurant purposely fails to provide consumers details of the ingredients of its food products. Research consumer protection laws and regulations, using your textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet.
