Do Children Have an Equal Opportunity to Achieve in School?

...Do children have an equal opportunity to achieve in school? The answer is a simple no. “Poor children have substantially lower achievement test scores than nonpoor children as young as ages three or four, before they even start school. (Jacob & Ludwig, 2009, p.59)” A family’s income can have a huge impact on their children’s future. Parents who make minimum wage generally do not have college education and in some cases do not have high school equivalency either. These families are not able to afford luxuries such as private schools, private tutors, or even extra-curricular activities such as sports or band. The parents may not be able to afford afterschool care or may have to work more than one job to provide essentials to the family so they might not have time to spend on homework, or parent/teacher meetings. This can mean less one on one contact from parents. Families with low incomes are also not able to help their children financially with college and many children grow up thinking that college is not something that is possible for them and so may not work as hard in class. Parents that have high incomes usually have college education and are able to afford better afterschool care, more educational toys and games, as well as private tutors for their children if they seem to need the extra help. Parents with high incomes also usually live in nicer homes, neighborhoods, have access to better-funded schools, and are able to help financially with their child’s college dreams...

...MSc Management Entrepreneurship and Opportunity Recognition The idea I want to develop during this course is related to Social Entrepreneurship. In the following three steps I am going to explain which social problem my idea is going to address, what that idea is and how it will bring value to its stakeholders. 1. A Social Problem that urges for an answer In every corner of the world we have seen, on the streets, individuals or groups performing to raise money. Usually these people are going through rough times and instead of asking for money directly to people passing by, they perform on the street and the ones who like it are free to help them. I believe that, at least once, you have realized they were talented enough to be professional performers. Unfortunately, many don't have the means or the opportunity to become professionally enrolled in that activity. So, currently we have "wasted talented" on the streets of our cities that long to be re-integrated professionally. 2. One possible solution I purpose the creation of "Home". Home will be a company within the Music and Arts Industry and which primary goal is to attract talented artists such as dancers and musicians and give them formation so that they make performances according to customer's needs and requirements. College Entrance Essay

...Every time I wake and start a new day I think of the new opportunities for experiences and learning. An education serves an enormous purpose for everyone, while taking advantage of the experience. As a student, I would like to focus on my studies and set new goals for the future. My primary goal is to increase my GPA, and to accomplish this I will dedicate more time to my studies. I find that creating good objectives helps me stay focused. Setting up a scheduled time for studying and always asking questions when unsure of a particular problem is the route to success. There’s always an answer to every problem. Hence, I would like to take advantage of every opportunity that presents itself and not look back at the mistakes I have made. My greatest strength is not giving up when things look bad or take a wrong turn. I have come to the realization that without an education life can be bleak and with no purpose, and I have set out to make my education a priority in my life. My family has always been supportive of my decisions especially when it came to my education. In addition, my oldest sister has been the source of inspiration in my life. She is a single mother of two beautiful kids, and graduated with a BA in Business Management and managed to graduate with honors. Now, this is amazing! I cannot describe the joy I felt for her when she finally accomplished part of her dream. We all need people who inspire us to be better and achieve the best in life. Someday...

You Are Not Fighting Alone

...essay Díaz writes about how his mother overcame great obstacles and barriers, fought family bonds and held on to a dream that she longed for. "The Dreamer" was initially directed at women, because women would find Díaz’s mother empowering. The audience grew as the story was shared more and more, anyone who has ever had a dream was reading it. This essay gives readers reinforcement that they are not alone overcoming any powerful setbacks they might have in achieving their own dreams. Díaz told his mother’s story of the struggles of living in a third world country, abuse that restrained her, and fate that opened the doors to a world of opportunity on the path to achieving her dream to become an educated nurse in the Dominican Republic. Díaz’s mother didn’t reach her initial dream, but she didn’t give up until she could present her kids with opportunities to achieve their dreams. The Dominican girl, Díaz’s mother, was never meant to leave the mountain she lived on. She was expected “to work on the family farm until she died or was married off” (Díaz 128). During her work on the farm, she was the one who tended to illness. Her grandmother did not like the idea of education, she insisted that “she stay on the farm, that she stay a mule” (Díaz 129). Díaz’s mother longed for an education more than anything. She wanted out of the life she knew. She wanted it so desperately that “she got down on her knees beside a stagnant puddle of water, put her mouth in it and drank deeply” (Díaz 129)...

The program consisted of simulations of various business problems that require analytical thinking and to be able to successfully work in a team. I was the team leader and our team performed very well, we were ranked among the top 10 of the best teams. Another strength is that I never hesitate to speak in English when I have the opportunity. This is mainly because it has always been interesting for me as a language and I had the chance to participate in several English language contests in the Baltic States. I have not won any medals, but the experience and knowledge gained has undoubtedly benefited me in both school and daily life activities. Active participation in school has always been my main objective, because I sincerely believe that having a good background in school is of key importance in order to successfully gain knowledge in University. Order is what I truly value, so I tend to complete tasks in time, never leaving anything unfinished. Patience and rationality are virtues which I believe are closely associated with a professional and I always try to rely on them. And by not allowing the home-school student the opportunity to attend it would be a great loss for them in the long run. Review Questions: 1. Cause and Effect Life in College

...LP 6 Cause and Effect First Draft Tina Clouse 5/13/14 Being a college student is truly an exhilarating, exciting, but also tiresome choice, I have made the decision to go back to college for the third and final time. It truly does seem as though it has gotten harder and harder to be a student over the years, and now I have the opportunity to reflect upon why this seems to be the case. After taking somewhat of a hiatus from school, I was given the idea from above, the strength from within, and the support of my family, friends, and co-workers to go back to college for my masters in what I have finally found to be my true passion. As a social case worker I will have the opportunity to work with battered and abused woman and children, and be given the opportunity to help law enforcement prosecute those you have offended. Being a single mother of five wondrous children and the opportunity to be the mother figure in so many other children’s lives has given me the foresight, the working knowledge as well, as the wisdom and compassion to help woman and children who have been victimized. The reason that I made this decision to go back to school to receive my masters degree comes from a multitude of facets. From all of my children supporting me emotionally, my fiancé supporting me in every way that a man should, to the support from the rest of my family friends, I felt as though it was more simply put, just my calling to do this. Although there are so many positive outcomes...

...to then connect the visions to achieve results. Last year, I started a non-profit organization called Educare. The organization collaborated with an American charity foundation called “Family Care” and raised money for the betterment of education and heath sectors for underprivileged children in Africa. I raised the money by selling my very own African themed sketches. All of the money went towards the foundation. Later on, during the summer I visited Nigeria to help out at the hospitals and schools where the funds were applied. Also, I got a chance to understand and experience the lives of the less fortunate. I visited the remote areas in a city called Lagos, which was an eye opening experience to me. I was able to put myself in the children’s position and understand their constraints. My visit really taught me to appreciate the life around me and not take it for granted. I was given the opportunity to help teach classes and organize lesson plans at schools, as well as given the opportunity to observe and assist with minor tasks at hospitals. A Sense of Urgency

...association, the opportunity for contentment and false urgency is lessened. Kotter states on page 1 in the opening paragraph, “A sense of urgency is important, of course, complacency is a disaster these days. But complacency is a relative minor issue for us. Better execution of our innovation initiative is our challenge.” If employees can grasp this concept of better execution and realize Kotter’s philosophy, urgency will become the product. The four basic traits that Kotter believes will escalate urgency in an organization are as follows: * Tactic #1 – Bring outside in: A leader cannot rely on insiders alone. On page 63, Kotter explains, “The disconnect between what insiders see, feel, and think, on one the hand, and external opportunities and hazards, on the other, can be astonishing at times – even in organizations that are producing very good short term results.” He states the internal stakeholder must comprehend what is occurring outside of the workplace. It is essential that the leaders of the institute provide information, personally meet with employees at all levels, and be transparent with all files. * Tactic #2 – Behave with urgency every day: On page 98, Kotter explains, “a sense of urgency is an increasingly powerful, if not essential, asset in an increasingly fast moving world.” If we want our employees to behave in a specific manner, we need to assert that behavior. Leaders always model expected behavior. * Tactic #3 – Find opportunity in crises: ...

Monk Career Path The University of Phoenix provide for their students a wide range of tools and different assets to help their students have a great opportunity to be highly successful. These tools help the students prepare themselves for the future and for the workforce adventure. One of the tools recommended by the school that it provides is the career interests profiler. The Career Interest Profiler gives students the opportunity to set goals to achieve their desired occupation. The results that I received from completing the Career Interest Profiler were very surprising indeed because upon me entering school I was undecided with what I wanted to do. In my case I didn’t really know what jobs were out there that were available to me in the job field that I’m pursuing. I was really happy with the results and it gave me motivation to give my all while in school. There were three job occupations that interested me the most relating to my field of interest. The first occupation that interested me was the Business Analyst Manager. I was able to search the job sites that were available to me pertaining to this occupation. With the Career Interests Profiler, it enabled me to see the job salaries, qualifications, and the high demand interest in this occupation. I found out things I didn’t know before and now I know what I need to do to prepare myself for this occupation. Out of my top three job...
