I. INTRODUCTION A. The Choice B. Nicholas Sparks
*Nicholas Sparks was born on December 31, 1965, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Patrick Michael Sparks, a professor, and Jill Emma Marie (née Thoene) Sparks, a homemaker and an optometrist's assistant. He was the middle of three children, with an older brother Michael Earl "Micah" Sparks (1964) and a younger sister, Danielle "Dana" Sparks (1966–2000), who died at the age of 33. Sparks has said that she is the inspiration for the main character in his novel A Walk to Remember.
Sparks was raised Roman Catholic and is of German, Czech, English and Irish ancestry. He and his wife are devout Catholics and are raising their children in the Catholic faith.
His father was pursuing graduate studies, and the family moved a great deal, so by the time Sparks was 8, he had lived in Watertown, Minnesota, Los Angeles, and Grand Island, Nebraska. In 1974 his family settled in Fair Oaks, California, and remained there through Nicholas's high school days. He graduated in 1984 as valedictorian from Bella Vista High School, then enrolling at the University of Notre Dame, having received a full track and field scholarship. In his freshman year, his team set a record for the 4 x 800 relay. Sparks majored in business finance and graduated with honors in 1988. He also met his future wife that year, Cathy Cote from New Hampshire, while they were both on spring break. They married on July 22, 1989 and moved to New Bern, NC.
C. Overview
Travis Parker has everything a man could want: a good job, loyal friends, even a waterfront home in small-town North Carolina.
In full pursuit of the good life----boating, swimming, and barbecues with his close buddies----he holds the vague conviction that a serious relationship would only cramp his style. That is until Gabby Holland moves in next door. Despite his attempts to be neighborly, the attractive red-head seems to have a grudge against him. Still, Travis can’t stop trying to ingratiate himself with his new neighbor, and his persistent efforts lead them both to the doorstep of a journey that neither could have foreseen. Spanning the eventful years of young love, marriage, and family, THE CHOICE ultimately confronts us with the most heart-wrenching question of all: How far would you go to keep the hope of love alive ?...

Report on Ways in Which School Prepares You for the World Outside

...Report on the ways in which school prepares us, the students, for the world outside Introduction This report is about the ways in which our school prepares us, the students, for the world outside of school. I have researched this by asking numerous students of their opinions, and also by asking some of the teachers how they try to prepare students for their later lives. I also gave teachers an opinion poll where they selected how much they did/did not agree with statements made. Findings * From asking the opinions of students of how well school prepares them for later life, I have found that the general view is that school does not prepare you for later life on the whole and that it only prepares you for work life and teaches you nothing about other crucial elements of life, such as managing money. * Teachers, on the whole as seen from the opinion poll, strongly agree that the current education system, and how it is delivered, prepares you fully for future life. * Some students believe that teachers have the opinion that school fully prepares you for life outside of school because they have not experienced a career like they are teaching their students because they came straight from university and went into working * Despite the general consensus from teachers that the school prepares students for later life fully, some teachers believe that the education system on the whole does not prepare students for life at all because as the students go further...

My first impression of the whole colorguard scheme was hard routines, mean girls and a lot of blood, sweat and tears. I realized that the girls were less intimidating once you got to know them and that they were absolutely great leaders and that they made learning the routines much less stressful. However, the only thing that didn't change was the fact that I would have to put my blood, sweat and tears into colorguard and looking back on all of it now, I wouldn't have wanted to have it any other way....

How to Write a Report

...ENHANCE YOUR REPORT IMAGE Whether in school or on the job, you must prepare and present reports. Written reports create an image of you – on paper. To achieve the most positive image, written reports must be prepared carefully and presented forcefully. To prepare an excellent report, Clippinger (1995, 11-12) suggest five equally vital steps that must be taken in the order listed: (1) plan; (2) draft; (3) revise; (4) edit; (5) format. Plan the Report To plan, ask: What is my purpose for writing, and what is the reader’s purpose for reading what I write? The answers become the core of the message. Compose and key the core idea. Then as they come to mind through listening, reading, and thinking, jot (on the computer screen) ideas and facts that related to the core idea. Next, check the list for missing items (and add them), unneeded items (and delete them), and redundant items (and combine them). Put the items in psychological order (main point followed by details, usually) and arranged them logically (in chronological, geographical, or importance order, for example). Finally, check the list to see that the items are tied together and related to the core idea. When appropriate, use tables, charts, or graphs to condense data; then list only summaries of what the visuals reveal in greater detail. Draft the Message To draft or compose the message, pretend that the reader is sitting before you. Write (at the keyboard) as you would talk with that person (level...

Understanding Why Students Drop Out of High School, According to Their Own Reports

...Understanding Why Students Drop Out of High School, According to Their Own Reports Are They Pushed or Pulled, or Do They Fall Out? A Comparative Analysis of Seven Nationally Representative Studies Abstract Research on school dropout extends from early 20th-century pioneers until now, marking trends of causes and prevention. However, specific dropout causes reported by students from several nationally representative studies have never been examined together, which, if done, could lead to a better understanding of the dropout problem. Push, pull, and falling out factors provide a framework for understanding dropouts. Push factors include school-consequence on attendance or discipline. Pull factors include out-of-school enticements like jobs and family. Finally, falling out factors refer to disengagement in students not caused by school or outside pulling factors. Since 1966, most nationally representative studies depicted pull factors as ranking the highest. Also, administrators in one study corroborated pull out factors for younger dropouts, not older ones, while most recent research cites push factors as highest overall. One rationale for this change is a response to rising standards from No Child Left Behind (NCLB), which can be ultimately tested only by future dropout research. education social sciences academics disparities educational measurement and assessment history and sociology of education Introduction The cause of a student dropping out is often termed as...
