I got up and got ready for school. As I walked past my mirror, I stopped and took a final look and thought “Boy, I look fabulous today.” I continued on my way down the stairs, and when I reached the kitchen my mother saw me and said “Oh no, you are not going to school looking like that.” Why not" I asked," I look fabulous.” Mom replied “You may look fabulous, but that outfit does not meet dress code. Go change!” I sighed and reluctantly went back upstairs to change. As I was changing I thought to myself if there were school uniforms, life would be easier. There would be fewer arguments with your mother, more money to spend on other things, and people would not be judged or judging others by what they wear.
First, uniforms will help decrease arguments in the morning before school because they restrict what you can wear. I know what you are thinking. You are thinking that would totally stink having to wear the same thing every day. This is not all that bad; you get to sleep longer. The biggest decision of what to wear is made for you. Plus a little bit of extra sleep can do wonders. Besides there are other ways of expressing yourself other than the way you dress, like using your words and your actions.
Secondly, the cost of school uniforms is a lot cheaper. You would just have to buy five shirts and five pairs of pants to get you through the week. These should last you all school year because you would not wear them anywhere else, besides who wants to be seen in a school uniform at the mall. Therefore, you would have more money to spend on other things, like seasonal clothes, stylish shoes, and glamourous cosmetics.
Finally, if all students dress the same they are less likely to be judged on what they wear. Let’s face it, teenagers are shallow and are quick to make assumptions about others based on how they dress. Sometimes cliques form because of the clothes the students wear some of us wear brand names, some of us choose not to wear brand names, and some of us cannot afford to wear brand names. No one should be singled out or bullied because of clothing choices.
See, school uniforms are not that awful. Sure, there are a lot of reasons against school uniforms. When you consider some of the reasons for them, would not you want to try them out? Once the school, parents, and student body reach an agreement on the uniform for your school, you may find it a lot easier than you think to adjust to your new wardrobe. Let’s try looking at it this way, it is an adventure, and you will not know how it ends until it happens.

...School Uniforms School uniforms are becoming a popular trend amongst schools. Students and even most parents don’t agree with the enforcement with school uniforms; stating that uniforms take away the right of self-expression. School uniforms are not a negative thing to have. Yes, uniforms limit what the students have to choose to wear to school every day, but it doesn’t limit them from learning; the only reason they are in school. Student treat school as a fashion show, so eliminating that puts the students’ full focus on schoolwork. Although requiring students to wear school uniforms may violate their self-expression in some ways, a uniform are supposed to be looked upon as a positive thing, because they eliminate bullying, combine social classes and gives the school campus a professional look. The most common argument against school uniforms is that they take away the students right to self- expression. Yes, school uniforms limit what the students have to wear, but he/she can still have their own ways of self-expression. Students can still express their style of choice by the way he/she styles their hair and what accessories they choose to wear. Their shoe choice is also a form of self-expression. Students can make the uniforms their own style without breaking the dress code. Just because a student can’t wear the most fashionable jeans to school doesn’t mean that his/her rights are taken away...

No More School Uniforms

...No School Uniforms Taylor Roberts Kaplan University CM107, Professor Healey April, 13, 2015 No School Uniforms It has been a very controversial topic between students, parents and teachers all across the U.S whether or not students should be wearing uniforms to school. I think there is so much debate over it because it does have an effect on how a person feels at school and maybe by limiting self-expression it could change how a person develops in their life. If it is a mandatory rule and a student is uncomfortable or feels strongly against it could actually cause more problems and may have a lasting impact on how a person responds to authority in the future. A lot of people feel that dressing the same could and does help eliminate bulling and bring their focus more on academics Due to ongoing shootings and in school violence Author Maria Wilde (2015), states that public schools should have the option of requiring uniforms to help identify intruders in the school and prevent gangs from forming on school grounds. While students and parents may fuss about the dress code while they are attending school according to an article I read online titled Why Public Schools Should Have Uniforms (Foxcove.com Home. N.p., n.d. 2015), most people neglect to factor in that...

School Uniforms Are Neccesary

...Argumentative Essay: School Uniform The idea of school uniforms seems like an antiquated concept for many North Americans. Unless a child attends private school, it is not normally practiced by children and families. Yet around the world, wearing school uniforms is the norm. Students studying in schools requiring school uniforms generally perform very well academically and seem happy wearing the same outfit every day. There are many benefits to wearing school uniforms that schools in Canada and the United States should incorporate into their public schools. One of the biggest concerns in schools these days is bullying. Students are harassed physically, verbally, and socially. The latest trend in bullying is cyberbullying. Often, the cause of bullying stems from people being different for not wearing the “right” clothes. If someone looks richer, most people feel like they have a higher social status or more power. To the contrary, uniforms allow children to learn on a more level playing field, with less judgment about clothing choices, brands of clothing, or physical appearance. A lot of students who wear uniforms claim that they feel more proud of their school. Wearing school colors gives students a feeling of being more connected to their school and classmates. If there is a sense of community and connectedness among the students, the use of foul language, gang behavior, and crimes like vandalism are largely eliminated. Wearing school uniforms can also help people gain...

School Uniforms

...Every school is in essence a learning environment. That which aids learning is acceptable, and that which hinders it should be unacceptable. Add to this the fears of school violence and student safety and you can see why many school boards are calling for school uniforms. In this article we will look at school uniforms and the potential benefits and problems associated with school uniforms along with legal issues and whether they are in fact truly effective. School uniforms serve a number of purposes. A good deal of research has been undertaken in regard to the use of the school uniform, and the net result has been the wider use of school uniforms in more recent years. Also to increase school safety, to encourage our students to experience a greater sense of school identity and belonging, to encourage an improvement in student behavior, to reduce school clothing costs, to encourage a high level of program participation and to improve and expand academic excellence. School uniforms range from the formal to the informal. Some schools that have implemented school uniforms have chosen what one usually thinks of in connection to Catholic schools: nice pants and white shirts for boys, jumpers and white shirts for girls. However, most public schools are turning to something more casual and more acceptable to parents and students: khakis or jeans and knit shirts of varying colors. The latter appear to be more affordable too because they can be used outside of school. Many school...

Why a School Uniform

...Why a school uniform My opinion about school uniform is that it is a good idea to have a uniform. If school students are poor and rich, you can not find difference between them, if they use school uniform. School uniform can also be good because many students tease others about how their clothes are. I think, it is very good that many schools have uniform. An other advantage for the school uniform could be that you do not always have to change your clothes every second day. Some students will not be mobbed because every students have the same uniform, but boys and girls have difference uniforms. The disadvantage for the school uniform is that parents can not afford it. Sometimes the teacher can be confused, because all students have the same uniform. It might be good if the pupils in our school wear school uniforms. Primarily, the students will see much better with school uniform than the normal clothes, they use everyday at school. Secondarily, any student in the school can not be embarrassed with their clothes. But it is also difficult for the parents to pay the price the school uniforms cots. I am sure that some students and parents are not on this agreement, but I am also sure that some students and parents are with the agreement as described above. The students will be equal with other children, who are rich. Of course, I will wear a school uniform, because I want to try something, I never have done before. Because the students in England use uniforms, I always...

School Uniforms Friend or Foe?

...Recent statistics show schools that promote school uniforms are high in attendance but are lacking in academic excellence. History also shows that in cases involving dress code violations and freedom of expression have ruled in favor of the students. School uniforms create an added cost for families and the impact varies among socioeconomic groups. Although some people believe that wearing school uniforms can be a greener alterative and makes better students there is no proof that it provides a safer, more studious environment. Schools say uniforms promote a more studious environment. Research strongly states that school uniforms promote no self-expression or justifiable increase in grades. With schools that do not require uniforms to be worn a decrease in attendance but a higher grade point average is apparent among its students. The qualities of the school and academics offered should promote the environment not the clothes the school requires the students to wear. School officials say that promoting school uniforms can create less conflict among students because all the students are wearing the same clothes. But recent studies show that conflict or bullying among students is still present with schools that promote school uniforms. In the article, "Dress Codes: The Pros And Cons,” the author explains that even if every student wears the same thing bullying is still going to be present because changing what they wear by making them wear identical uniforms will not break this...

...School Uniforms By Kendall Cole June 2014 AED/200 - CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN AMERICAN EDUCATION Instructor: Christine Duhamel University of Phoenix Since the late 1990's school uniforms have been worn in mostly urban school districts across America. Initially, they were opposed by stakeholders, especially the students. School uniforms were accused of stripping students of their creative expression. After a while, uniforms were tolerated, it was realized that wearing uniforms helped to create a positive learning environment. “School uniforms are being advocated for a range of social, educational and familial issues” (Bodine, 2003, p. 67). There are so many issues students have to deal with when they attend school. Some of these issues create negativity in the student’s educational career. Stakeholders must come up with ways to help make learning environments and experiences more positive. Wearing school uniforms will help to create a positive learning environment. Since the turn of the new millennium, school uniforms have become common place and a trend in large school districts across America. In 1996, former President Bill Clinton mentioned school uniforms in his State of the Union Address (DeCosta, 2006 p. 49). Former President Clinton said, " And if it means that teenagers will stop killing each other over designer jackets, than our public schools should be able to require their students to wear school uniforms" (Mitchell,1996). Children have so many issues they...

...School Uniforms: What’s the Big Debate? Mar’Kisha Everett English 147 July 8, 2015 University of Phoenix, Anne Cox School Uniforms: What’s the Big Debate? A school uniform is a set of standardized clothes worn primarily for an educational institution. Mention this around many teenagers and you have just started one of the biggest debates maybe ever. But just what is it about requiring kids to wear uniforms at school that seems to get everyone in such an uproar? Freedom of expression and individuality are the top two arguments opposing school uniforms. Enforcing a uniform policy is not an attempt to ignore freedom of expression or to try and stop individuality, it is simply an idea implemented to gain discipline, safety, and professionalism. School uniforms are not just implemented to help students exceed in school alone, but is also a great preparation for the future. Even though many people disagree because of freedom speech or expression, school uniforms are a good idea because they are affordable, they can prevent bullying and violence, and prepare students for a dress code in the workplace. Growing up today is probably not the easiest thing to do. There are many obstacles that may hinder learning in school such as gang violence, abuse from students and faculty, and bullying. Many students are bullied because they don’t look like other students in the class. While enforcing uniforms won’t stop the bullying, ensuring that everyone is in...

...School Uniforms: Are School Uniforms Constitutional or in Violation of Student Rights Danielle Grider Ivy Tech Community College ENG111-15H-H1 March 18, 2012 Wendy Kruger School Uniforms: Are School Uniforms Constitutional or in Violation of Student Rights For the past decade, educators, parents and students have debated over the issue of regulating student dress codes. While uniforms are mostly utilized by private schools, uniforms are making their way into public schools in the United States. The question becomes are uniforms unconstitutional and do they take away students’ rights, or do they create a safer and more positive learning environment. Since uniform policies are growing more popular in public middle schools and high schools, this has become a highly debated issue. Many people believe that uniforms can create a safer and more positive learning environment for students. According to Stephen Daniels (2001), who is the director of research for the North Carolina Family Policy Council, dress codes and uniforms reduce conflict associated with name brand and gang clothing, decreases the gap between the poorer and richer students, and encourage a sense of equality that helps with the overall order and discipline. Daniels gives statistics to show the effectiveness of school uniforms according to principals that have a uniform policy in their schools: 79 percent believe uniforms have positive effects on classroom discipline; 67 percent...

...cons about implying school uniforms. I want everyone to know that there are two ways to view if school uniforms should be implied to every public school. There are two sides to the story, but when it comes to picking one over the other, it's your decision to make. I will explain every detail about why schools should or should not have uniforms. In this case. I am having difficulty choosing a side because I agree with both, but everyone has a different perspective. The issue of use of uniforms in public schools has produced a lot of discussion in the recent years. A high number of key stakeholders in the educational sector think that uniforms may reduce negative conduct that is connected to student dress such as school violence, absenteeism, teasing and gang related activities. The main argument that opponents are advancing is that uniforms get in the way of students right to choose dress, violating their right to speech. While public schools have always had policies on dress code, there is a need to evaluate whether uniforms in public schools have any significance. The practice of requiring public school students to wear school uniforms began during the 1990s. Proponents argued that school uniforms led to better academic Bible believers need to support interventions that work to eradicate violence in schools. ...people believe that school uniforms make the children safer. Schools have been thinking of having children at school wear school uniforms. In my opinion, school uniforms are obviously horrible. In the first place, the school uniforms that the schools provide can be unflattering to some body types. In my opinion, it could cause more problems for most of the kids that don’t have self-confident or don’t really think about what’s on the inside the kids may already struggle with their self-body image. I on the other hand does not really pay attention to my body image. In the second place, the schools do not provide the uniforms I think that more schools have the parents buy them for their children in my opinion, the staff members of...

Uniforms in All K-12 Schools

...try to break away from parent controlled decisions and try to make decisions about their lives on their own. Many times the decisions made by teens are driven by the desire to fit in rather than any cognitive, well thought out process to make a wise choice. Teenagers today are faced with choices about what to do, what to say, how to act, and what to wear. Peer pressure can begin when the “in” crowd decides whether they will accept you or not. In today’s public schools, acceptance might just depend on what fashions you wear. Expensive clothing trends decide who’s who – who’s on top and who’s on the bottom. A teen’s social status will affect his decision making in all of the other, tougher areas of adolescent pressure. Some of the pressure on today’s students to compete with their peers can be easily relieved if school uniforms were a requirement in public K-12 classrooms. The drive to fit in and be accepted by the crowd is arguably one of the most important things on a student’s mind when they enter the school each morning, distracting from the learning that should be their main focus. “As teens move into adulthood, they begin to ask some of the following questions: Am I normal? Do I fit in? What should I look like? What should I do? More often than not, they turn to their friends and classmates for answers. If they get mixed up with a bad crowd, teens usually end up making mistakes.” (Fanning, 2003). Students who can afford today’s fashions are quite often perceived...

...School Uniforms: Turning Our Kids Into Soulless Conformists In text one “School uniforms; pros and cons” (2012) Ann Svensen explains the pros and cons’ of school uniforms. She looks at the subject from different angels and involves and focuses on two main arguments. The first argument she elucidates is the affect that school uniforms have on reducing school crimes and increasing the student’s disciplinary excellence. As for this argument Svensen talks about an informal statistic that showed, that school crime had highly declined over the years in California’s Long Beach Unified School District, after the urban made a mandatory uniform policy. Secondly she writes about, how many experts believe that school uniforms is a negative thing, because it is a violation of the students rights and freedom to express them self. Furthermore, it takes away their individuality. Journalist Laura Clark argues that school uniforms improve pupils in text two “School uniforms improve pupils’ behaviour both in and out of school”(2007). In her article she includes quotes from different professors, who argues that school uniforms makes the students more well behaved both out of and in school. Her main arguments are that school uniforms prevents bullying based on social status and the children don’t have to be insecure or think about their clothing. Furthermore, she argues that it decreases crime since the students know that people outside school will be able to catch them based of their uniforms...

Should Schools Have Uniforms?

...whether students should wear uniform to school has been in process for years. Students savor the freedom of no compulsion on uniform but are unsuccessful in recognizing the abundant advantages of wearing uniform. I fervently believe that students should wear uniform to school as it promotes discipline and discourages the rise of social conflicts. An evident advantage of school uniform is that students are able to focus more on their studies. In schools where uniform is not present, students spend much of their time choosing their clothes and getting dressed. Their focus is deflected off their studies and as a result, they suffer academically. Many students have also proven to suffer mentally. A large amount of kids are uncomfortable with their bodies and feel much more comfortable and relaxed in a loose uniform. Schools without uniforms also facilitate the progression of the feeling of inequality among students. The underprivileged students are easily distinguished from the well-off ones and thus the underprivileged students start feeling inferior to the rest. This also makes them more vulnerable subjects for mockery. In sheer distress, some students might even turn to drugs and alcohol. Thus, when school uniform is present, students are relieved of all such pressures and perform better. School uniforms are also a symbol of obedience, discipline and tidiness. The school is after all a place of learning and there is no need of fancy dressing at school. Students should wear garments...
