Schooling Versus Education School can be defined as an institution where instruction is given to educate children. Furthermore, an education is “the process of receiving or giving systematic instruction” or “an enlightening experience.” (Merriam-Webster) Every child is required to go to school whether it is public, private, or from home. The general idea of school is “to help students realize their full potential, to equip them with the skills they’ll need to achieve success and contribute to society, or to foster the development of independence, critical thinking, and strong ethical values.” (“Against School”, 141) In reality, we are thoughtlessly going through a mandatory twelve-year education system that is strict and constraining. If you were to ask a group of students what their perspective on school is, they would most likely respond with something that relates to it being boring and pointless. Considering the general “unhappiness” of students and teachers alike, what is the purpose of our schooling system if it doesn’t have a positive affect? There are so many aspects of the schooling system that could, and in fact should, be improved but nothing seems to be done to fix these flaws. One can wonder why there haven’t been any grand gestures to reform the school system. After twelve years of being put through this strict system there must be something to gain from it, otherwise what is the point.

...Every year more and more parents are taking their children out of the public school system and enrolling them in home schooling programs. Parents question the current public school system and wonder if home schooling would be a better alternative for their children’s education. Considering that there are already more than four million children enrolled in these types of programs in the United States alone, it is not surprising that it has caused some heated debates during the past decade. Along with an average 15 to 20 % yearly growth rate, many professional educators are worried that because of this much needed funds will be kept from entering the public education system. During the year of 2007 the United States Department of Education conducted a study that showed home schooled student's test scores were much higher than others. Even the median scores for all grades were much larger than those students of public or private schools. For example, in grades one through four, average home schooled students were usually one grade higher than their peers in public school. By the equivalent of eighth grade, those home schooled students were usually considered four years ahead of those in public school.
