Explaining the 5/20 is quite simply looking at the video “Food Label and You”. This video explains the 5/20 rule broken down is really 5% or less, and 20% or more. These figures are as the video states a relation to the amount of nutrient that is contained in the food that we consume. As the video goes on to explain further the rule goes as stated, if the food of choice has 5% or less it is not a good source of that nutrient, but if the food has 20% or more then it is a good source of a particular nutrient.
I pulled a product off the shelf to demonstrate the 5/20 rule. The product of choice is Zatarain’s Rice Pilaf. At first glance, this product is a bad source of vitamin A. Percent Daily Value coming in at 2%. On the other hand, iron in this product is at 20%. This means this product is a good source of iron.
Looking at this same Zatarain’s box the serving size and how many serving are at the top of the label just like it is stated in the “ How to understand Nutritional Food Label”. This information makes it easy to compare this product to others. It also lets you know how to add up the Daily Values according to how much one consumes.
The calories are displayed as total calories and calories from fat. This is part of the label is important to those who count calories. Along with the servings part of the label the calories can be calculated by using the two pieces of information. One can determine how much calories are being consumed.
As I look further down the label I get to the breakdown of the nutrients and the Percent Daily Values of each. “Percent Daily Values are based on a 2000 calorie diet” ( Zataran’s box, footnote). Here you see the nutrient that Americans consume to much of according to the “ How to Understand and use the Nutrition Fact Label (2004), These overly consumed nutrient include saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, and sodium.
