CAREERS SUMMATIVE: PSYCHOLOGIST

For my careers summative, I have chosen to report the job of a Psychologist.
Job Description/ Job Duties
A psychologist studies how humans think, feel and behave from a scientific viewpoint. They apply this knowledge to help people understand, change and explain their behaviour. Psychologists study people’s feelings and thoughts and use this information to help patients function better in their day-to-day lives.
For my report I chose to report this career choice because I am very interested in the science behind disorders and illness’. I also enjoy comprehending the reasons behind people’s actions. Lastly, I get an indescribable feeling from helping people conquer battles in their lives and I believe there is no other job that could accommodate all three reasons why I’ve selected the job of a psychologist.
Education and Training
To become a psychologist, you must take university courses. At the University of Toronto, for the major program in psychology, in your first year level you MUST take Introductory Psychology. In higher years, students must obtain 6.5 credits in psychology and 2.0 at the 300/400 level.
The required high school courses for admission into post-secondary psychology at the University of Toronto is Grade 12 biology (4U) and advanced functions. It takes 6 years to acquire the Master’s Degree in psychology and 10 years to acquire the PHD Degree. The total cost to acquire the master’s degree is roughly $40,000.
Specialized Skills
Since psychologists are working with mentally unstable people it is very important for them to be emotionally conscious of the meaning behind what they are saying. I feel that I am always aware of what I am saying to people, I developed this skill from one of my many days babysitting children.
Psychologists must also be able to give quick critical thoughts in urgent situations. I believe that in crucial times is when I give my best opinions/advice to people; I picked up this ability at school in drama class.
Lastly, it is extremely important for psychologists not to look at problems from a one sided view but to explore all angles of a situation. I would consider myself very open-minded; I have developed this particular skill when my friends began to come to me when they needed a different outlook on circumstances that needed an unbiased perspective.

Wages/Income
Generally, a psychologist’s salary ranges between 100-200 thousand dollars a year. With these earnings I would be more than able to support the lifestyle that I have been hoping to enjoy one day.
Working Conditions
There are many different types of psychologists, clinical, research, counselling and neuropsychologists are just 4 of them. Clinical, counselling and neuropsychologists are usually employed by institutions or agencies such as hospitals or schools. These psychologists typically work regular office hours. Psychologists are able to open their own private offices and set their own hours but work evenings and weekends. Psychologists often have high levels of stress due to heavy workloads and tight scheduling. Although treating clients is very rewarding it is emotionally and psychically draining. Psychologists also travel a lot to attend conferences and workshops to learn new things about their growing field.
Personal Reflection
After all my research I am more interested in this occupation that I was when I first chose it. Although the time spent in school may be lengthy I believe that the job itself is more than rewarding. The income is more than I ever could have imagined. You get to work from locations that have multiple other things going on which I think is amazing.
I believe my interest and values are suitable for this particular occupation because I know there is absolutely nothing in this world I do better or enjoy than to help someone move on through a difficult time in their life and with a job like this, I wouldn’t be working a day in my life because I’d be doing something I loved.
Career Studies Course Reflection
The last 3 activities I found helpful and useful in my personal career development were the How Smart Am I- Multiple Intelligences booklet, the Who Am I assignment and the Colour activity.
I think the knowledge I gained about myself in Career Studies will help me to determine my future educational and career plans more than I thought at the beginning of the year. I now know that I don’t necessarily need to go into a field where science and providing checkups and surgeries is the only way to help people. Also I have come to terms with the fact that I need to choose something that I want to do for the rest of my life sooner rather than later which this course has helped me to do. I now have 3 careers in mind that I am considering going into thanks to the knowledge that career studies has provided me with.

...Observing the living creatures around us Jemyla bell AIU Online Biology IP.1 Question When taking a hike, you notice that a ruby-throated hummingbird seems interested in your red hat. It hovers over the hat and then darts away. Do ruby-throated hummingbirds prefer some colors more than others when visiting flowers? Observing the living creatures around us There is a saying that ruby-throated hummingbirds are attracted to preferred colors curiosity struck me when I noticed the hummingbird taking interest in my red hat, very interested in knowing the truth for myself I decided to conduct an experiment to find out whether ruby-throated hummingbirds are attracted to some colors more than others. According to (Suarez & Gass, 2002) she believe that ruby-throated hummingbirds may be attracted to some colors like red. I then decided to test the theory for myself by measuring the time and frequency of the hummingbird’s attraction by testing a series of colors. By doing this experiment it should reveal rather the ruby- throated hummingbird is attracted to red or a series of colors. Hypothesis I predict that ruby-throated hummingbirds will be attracted to the red color more verses the others Colors. Prediction: During this experiment I expect to obtain accurate results based on the use of my experimental method to find out if the ruby-throated hummingbird is more attracted to red verses other colors. I expect to prove that bright colors like red attract...

Political Science 101 Research Paper

...Political Science 101’s significance, in my opinion, is to teach those in our country the importance of learning about American government and staying informed on the issues that plague our society daily. Before taking Political Science 101, I had a decent understanding of American government and politics, or so I thought. I came into the course expecting to relearn the same information I have known since primary school, but instead, my eyes were opened to much more about my country than what I knew before. I feel as if throughout my time in public school I only learned what school systems wanted me to hear, not exactly the whole truth of how our country developed. Political Science 101 taught me that there is so much more to the American past...

Classical Argument: Earthquakes

...aftershocks lasted for twelve months. Other details from this report indicate that the death toll is around 250,000 to 300,000 casualties. Scientists today can only prove that the earthquake occurred between May 20 and May 29 (date translated from B.C. to Calendar Year). The first instrument to measure the seismic waves of earthquakes was invented by Charles F. Richter at the California Institute of Technology. (Bellis, 2013) He introduced his new instrument called the Richter scale, to the world of science. His invention allows scientists today to study the mechanics behind earthquakes and locate the epicenter to which the natural disaster originated. The largest earthquake recorded by the Richter scale was measured on May 22, 1960 at a magnitude of 9.5. The quake resulted in 1,886 deaths, 2,000,000 homeless, and $1,175,000,000 total in damages. (“The Largest Earthquake”, [PDF file]) If we want to see these large numbers slide down to zero, the impossible will need to be challenged by science. This improvement is especially apparent in the world of architecture and civil engineering, where there has been an unremitting ambition to surpass the existing boundaries, particularly with regards to height. The most renowned early example of a structure where height was key are the Pyramids of Giza where elevation was crucial in order to radiate power and divine authority. The tallest pyramid, standing at 146.5m, was built more than 4500 years ago, and remained the tallest manmade structure for the next 3800 years, until the 1300s when Lincoln Cathedral was built topping it by only 13.5m [1][2]...

What Are the Key Aspects in the Construction and Design of the Burj Dubai Tower?

...structure. The Burj Dubai, situated in Dubai, will soon be the tallest building in the world, bypassing the previous record holder, the Taipei 101 by almost 290 metres giving it an astonishing 800 metre height. With over 2700 feet, designing and constructing such a vast building has given significant challenges to engineers and designers alike. Since the building can hold up to 35,000 people at once, it is essential that it is strong, comfortable and able to move people up and down it at a steady rate. This essay will explore how the designers and engineers went about solving these issues. One of the key problems the engineers had to overcome was effect of the wind load and how it would affect the building motions due to the extraordinary height of the tower. Wind load is something that must be taken into account for all buildings, but obviously the wind velocity increases the higher you go and since the structure is over 800 metres tall, there is guaranteed to be a large wind force acting on the building. Three different engineering firms: Skidmore, Owings and Merrill who were all working on the project, hired the RWDI (Rowan Williams Davies & Irwin Inc.) a wind and environmental engineering firm to conduct wind studies on the Burj Dubai’s design. The RWDI had worked on a number of previous projects such as the Petronas Towers and the Taipei 101 and its facilities included four boundary wind tunnels. Their job was to minimize the effects of the wind load and building motion of the...

My Journal Entry 1

...Entry 1 (24th September 2012) It's exactly 12:01 am now, and seeing that this is my first entry, I should update a little of myself. I'm currently at Taiwan for a short vacation with my high school friends of about 10years. And they are Lee Sue Ee, Soh Pei Ling, and Chong Yee Wun. We arrived here on Saturday, 22nd September 2012, and so far it has been an hectic journey seeing that we are here on our own for the first time and we did not go through any travel agency. Enough of updating, I just finish my STA assessment and e-mailed it to my group mates to submit later in the morning. I just hope that I did good enough despite my heavy schedule and with little initiative. Oh yes, I am now in my room while the girls are sleeping and the view is just amazingly breath-taking. How fortunate i am that I could do my assignment while looking at this sea view. The sound of the rushing waves eases my mind to relaxation and light music as my background to suit my emotion. The only thing that lack, is a partner to share this spectacular moment. Anyway, I should sleep now. Gotta be up early later for another tour around the north-east Taiwan before heading to the capital city Taipei later in the evening. I will update my entry again later whilst exploring every possibility here. Good Night ! Good afternoon, it was quite a day after waking up restlessly. Breakfast here was amazing, I mean, what more can we ask with such nature phenomenal as our spectacular view. After finishing our...

Seven Wonders of 21st Century Architecture

...Seven Wonders of 21st Century Architecture You may not be able to name them all, but most people have at least heard of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World. Here’s a list with links: Great Pyramid of Giza, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Temple of Artemis, Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, Colossus of Rhodes, and the Lighthouse of Alexandria . Of the seven, only the Pyramid remains, the rest we know of only through historic documents.[1] There have been other “7 Wonders” lists and in 2007, the Swiss government sponsored a project to create a new list, with selections made by popular vote. Over 100 million votes were cast, and the new 7 Wonders were announced as follows: Chichen Itza (the Yucatan, Mexico pyramid), Christ the Redeemer (Brazil’s enormous statue of Jesus), Colosseum (Rome’s arena of Gladiators),Great Wall of China (you can see it from space!),Machu Picchu (ancient city built on an unbelievably high mountain top in Peru),Petra (Jordan’s city cut directly into the side of a stone mountain ),and the Taj Mahal (India’s majestic temple/mausoleum).[2] But my final Cyber Journey of the semester started not as a stroll through history, but as a trip into the future of arts and Architecture with a look at another “7 Wonders” list – The 7 New Wonders of the 21st Century [3], as selected by Architecture, an online review published by the website Quazen.
