All these things are possible through science and technology. Today travelling have become very fast. We can travel a long distance in minutes through aeroplanes. All this is possible through science. The railway is the another way of comfort travelling. Cars, buses, scooters are other means of travelling which we use day and night. These things made our life trouble free. It is all the wonder of science. Modern world is more and more dependent on them. It is said that "Science is a good and useful servant but it is a bad destructive master." I am saying this thing because today we are misusing it. ...Science and Technology Consider: * Science and its impact on society * Scientific developments & effect on man; environment etc. * The Sciences VS the Humanities * Science & Religion Definitions: * Science - study of nature and the knowledge we gain through observations and experiments * Scientific discovery - finding out about something about the existing workings of nature that was not known before * Technology - application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes (e.g. antibiotics and their uses) * Invention - newly created product/process Science today causes as many problems as it solves. * Horrible pervasions of science * E.g. Invention of poison gas (holocaust), war against Japan ended with the atomic bomb * Even when science is intended to benefit humans, unintended consequences could occur. * E.g. Rachel carson's silent spring (1963) awakened the world to the dangers of pollution * How science in the service of business can produce catastrophic results ; pesticides for farms -> Are we blinded by profit so much so we don't do not care about the environment? * *air pollution is the biggest cause of human deaths today Science, money and value * Science is very much subservient to business interest today -> values of those who seek fame and fortune creep into science: profit often determines the direction of science, influencing the choice of problem investigated by......

Science and Technology

...The first lecture was about Science and Technology and he started off by saying that science came from society for the needs of the people meaning that everything Science and Technology invented or discovered is for the needs of society. Science and Technology both have their similarities and differences. One similarity of Science and Technology is that they were both created for knowledge while one difference would be in their usage. Science is for the understanding of the natural world and technology is the action of saving the natural world. Society however is the main predecessor of both science and technology because it is society that controls and guides the forms of science and technology. To conclude, Science and Technology are not necessarily related in the sense that they can be independent from one another and develop separately. Society is the determining factor for their possible connections and science and technology have become so intertwined that they have become related. The next lecture was on The Biography of Science and the video “The Story of Science – What is Out There?” was used as reference. This was basically about how early scientists or philosophers used their technology or invented technology to expand science and help society. The documentary mainly focused on philosophers being curious about what is outside the earth and its atmosphere and building telescopes to expand the vision of the naked eye. They studied the planets and how the planets......

What Is Science and Technology?

...MST 4, 1st assignment Date: 06/19/12 KARL JUSTEEN CLORIBEL DAVID What is science? What is technology? How do they impact or mold society? Science is a sustained intellectual activity carried on by human beings that is designed to discover and test information with regards to the physical and natural behavior of everything observable, testable and collectible data that can be organized into meaningful patterns. Information is the primary goal of science. To be able to answer and explain every inquiry is the rational nature of man, therefore, through time, man has devised a systemic process by which he can examine and discern the order and relationships that exist between and amongst various branches of knowledge. Science therefore is any systematically organized body of information on any subject matter. Developing countries, such as the Philippines, constantly pursue new knowledge and techniques to further our progress with the help of scientific process and observation. Though the several branches of science apply to all nations and all types of societies, Philippine science tend to focus more on the natural and economical departments, as we are a very naturally rich location. The Department of Science and Technology is the governing body of scientific activity in the country, responsible for organizing, recognizing, and enabling every scientific study to reach its most beneficial purpose. It has been the core of scientific progress in the country. A novel once...

Defining Science, Medicine, and Technology

...What is Science? Science is the collective human effort to better understand the history of the natural world and how it works, using the basis of observed physical evidence to derive this understanding. It is done through experimentation using simulation of natural processes under controlled environments. An ecologist observing the territorial behaviors of bluebirds and a geologist examining the distribution of fossils in an outcrop are both examples of scientists making observations in order to find patterns in natural phenomena. They just do it outdoors and thus entertain the general public with their behavior. A primary aim of science is to collect facts. What Is Medicine? The term medicine is used to refer to the science of healing, as well as any substance that is used to treat diseases and promote health. Today there is a variety of different health care professions that use medicine as a tool to improve and maintain health. The use of medicine and plants with medicinal properties has taken place since the prehistoric times when people believed that herbs and animal parts could help heal sick and injured people. Many countries around the world such as Egypt, India, Persia, and China have been developing traditional medical practices for hundreds of years. Since then the use of medicine has become greatly intertwined with most people’s lives and it is often used on a daily basis by many people in order to help with things such as lowering blood pressure or......

Teaching Science, Mathematics, and Technology

...TEACHING SCIENCE, MATHEMATICS, AND TECHNOLOGY Teaching Should Be Consistent With the Nature of Scientific Inquiry Science, mathematics, and technology are defined as much by what they do and how they do it as they are by the results they achieve. To understand them as ways of thinking and doing, as well as bodies of knowledge, requires that students have some experience with the kinds of thought and action that are typical of those fields. Teachers, therefore, should do the following: Start With Questions About Nature Sound teaching usually begins with questions and phenomena that are interesting and familiar to students, not with abstractions or phenomena outside their range of perception, understanding, or knowledge. Students need to get acquainted with the things around them—including devices, organisms, materials, shapes, and numbers—and to observe them, collect them, handle them, describe them, become puzzled by them, ask questions about them, argue about them, and then to try to find answers to their questions. Engage Students Actively Students need to have many and varied opportunities for collecting, sorting and cataloging; observing, note taking and sketching; interviewing, polling, and surveying; and using hand lenses, microscopes, thermometers, cameras, and other common instruments. They should dissect; measure, count, graph, and compute; explore the chemical properties of common substances; plant and cultivate; and systematically observe the......

Traditional vs Modern Science and Technology.. .

...meaning of science and technology is viewed in different ways. In its broad term technology is dealing with the use and knowledge of humanity’s tools and crafts. It is also a knowledge of using tools and machines to do tasks efficiently. We often use technology to control the world in which we live and it is developed to extend human capabilities. Technology is an innovation, change, or modification of the natural environment to satisfy perceived human needs and wants. we can also view technology in four aspects. First, technology is defined as technics which refer to material products of human making or fabrication. It refers to all material artifacts produced by a person or group in society. Second, technology is viewed as a technology which refers to the complex of knowledge, methods, materials and constituent parts used in making certain kind of technic. it means that not only one technology is use in making a certain kind of technic. technology is also a form of human cultural activity so it is viewed as a distinctive form of human practice like other proffesions which is pratice by technologists like mechanists and engineers. Lastly, technology as a total societal enterprise is the complex of knowledge, people, skills, organizations, facilities, technichs, physical resources, methods, and technologies that taken together and in relationship to one another are devoted to the research, development, production, and operation of technics. in this sense technology is viewed......

Science and Technology of Ancient Egypt

...Excavation Report (Artifact module) 1. The first object discovered on the dig site was what seemed to be a small coin. The metal seemed to be silver with a diameter of approximately an inch. By observing and researching the engravings on the coin my guess would be the coin is in the time frame between 1606-1607, which was the rule of James I. 2. The second object found on the dig site was a piece of bone by further examination of the bone we concluded that it came from a horse in the year 1609. By the study of documents we found that the first horses were brought to the America in 1609. By examining the butchery marks on the bone we derived the conclusion that the horses became food for the colonists over the following winter which is known as starving time. 3. The third object found was a white clay pipe which dates to be around the 1600s around the time of the settlement of Jamestown. These pipes were used to smoke tobacco. The pipe measures about 6 inches in length. 4. The fourth object we found was what seemed to be the remains of a jug, by further examination of the jug we concluded the jug was made of pottery and more specifically the type of pottery known as stoneware. The art work on the jug shows us that it was made between 1600-1610. 5. The fifth and final object found was an iron nail, more specifically it was a wrought iron nail found made after the 16th century. This was concluded by examining other dig sites and cross checking our other artifacts......

Which Came First? Science or Technology?

...them said it was science which came first. And so I browsed the web to acquire more information. I came across so many blogs and articles debating and justifying which really came first. Some says it is science because since when the universe was created, it is already there, just waiting to be discovered while some says it is technology because before science was discovered, the human primates already uses technology back then without them knowing that what they were using were some sort of technology. If we are going to get the meaning of the two, according to Merriam Dictionary, Science is a body of knowledge about or study of the natural world based on facts learned through experiments and observation while Technology is the use of science in industry, engineering, etc., to invent useful things or to solve problems. But in my opinion though, technology does not necessarily rely on science all the time. Science is the research of what we do not know while technology is the application of that we know. Science is concerned with "what it is" and technology is concerned with “what it is to be". Technologists would mostly conceptualise possible ideas without depending on any scientific bases or advances. But, they might have to fall back on science for the materialisation of some. They would mostly be using real time data and experimental results for optimisation, rather than theoretical calculations which the scientists on the other hand do. Science and technology have their......

Our Future with Science and Technology

...Our Future with Science and Technology In Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, Huxley describes a chilling vision of a totalitarian society ruled by both manipulation and conditioning of its' citizens. It ways eighty one years ago that Huxley made this fictional world into a piece of literature that still resonates with his readers today. Social engineering and technology of modern society were either at its' infancy or not even created yet when Huxley wrote his book. The maturity of these ideologies and technologies that makes Brave New World touch close to home. Is it possible to bring a world of chaos to order or is it just a proclivity of the human condition? In Utopia by Sir Thomas More, the city Amaurot is the city of Hythloday's research of Utopian society. His mention of the lack of privacy among its' citizens can be very relevant to today. While we can still lock our doors and windows, close our curtains and blinds, the amount of privacy one has has been increasingly diminishing. With the advent of federal approbation of various ways of the government to invade on a person's right to privacy is a slow progression to the possibility of losing our privacy completely. Others argue that discretion of these actions should not be a worry of the common citizen. They argue that if you have done nothing wrong, you have nothing to hide. It is a way of justification of a deplorable act on our everyday privacy. And the debate will only continue to escalate as the rapid......

Advantages and Disadvantages of Science and Technology

...How the Future Predicts Science Fiction As the author David Levine said that prediction is very difficult, especially about the future. All of us and science         fiction writers are hardly to precisely predict what will happen in the future. Why it’s difficult to precisely predict future? First of all, every science fiction writers have their individual experience and personal preference.Additionally, according to the history, we can make a conclusion that nothing will happened as like as before, our world is changing, our views of the future have changed over time. What’s more, science fiction writers aren’t futurists, they wouldn’t attempts to make some accurate prediction, so they prefer to based on the development tendency of the world and what people are concerned about right now   to make some literary categories. Therefore,it’s the future that predicts science fiction.      Science writers need not even be set in the future, they are just trying to write an entertainment and thought-provoking stories to attract people’s mind.they prefer to fall into one or more of the following literary categories,Cautionary tales,Thought experiments,Literalized metaphors and Explorations of new science and technology. To some extent, they are a batch of nonmalignant socialists.Because they have transmitted a mass of message which is conductive to our life.So it’s the future that predicts science fiction.      Beside of these, each science fiction writers is an individual human being......

The Ability to Use Past Innovations to Chart Future Shifts in the Relationship Between Science, Technology and Culture.

...ability to use past innovations to chart future shifts in the relationship between science, technology and culture. Abstract The study of history can easily have a somewhat anecdotal purpose behind examining it, but with the advent of Winston’s ‘Modeling for change’ we are able to discern a concentration of social forces working directly on the process of innovations rather than being a force on innovation. It is for this reason that we have the ability to chart future shifts in science, technology and culture through an evolutionary social based process that exist in a perpetual dialogue always tinkering, refining and suppressing devices throughout the ages. There has been a popular contention, a somewhat anecdotal purpose behind studying the past that has something to do with making sure that 'we learn from it' and are not destined to 'repeat it' as such. (Santayana 1906) But when it comes to new technologies it is easy 'at first glance, that there seems to be no patterns in the changes…In some cases the new technologies swept through quickly; in others the transition took decades. In some, the new technologies were complex and expensive to develop. In others… technologies were simple extensions of what the leading companies already did better than anyone else.' (Christensen 1997) What Winston has for the most part provided us, is a more 'crucial overview of how communication technologies develop' (Winston 1998 p11) within the social sphere, to that which......

If the company carried on with the same profit/cost structure, the company’s ROA would be 5% more or less in next 5 years, EPS would be 0.44 – 0.97 and stock price would goes down to less $10 – less $20. I can assume that there is no additional stock issuance. As of 1984, the ROA is 5.6%, EPS 0.57 and stock price $13-$37. 1.
