In the beginning, there was nothing. According to the Book of Genesis, God created everything from scratch. God created the heavens, earth, light, darkness, sea, stars, birds, and animals. God created a man and named him Adam. God created a woman and named her Eve. Adam and Eve were put in the Garden of Eden. The Garden of Eden was filled with fruit trees, animals, and there were river flowing all the time. In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve had plenty to eat. They did not have to work nor make money. Adam and Eve were naked but they were shameless. Adam and Eve did not have much to worry about.

In the year 2001, we are living in the garden that is embedded with various scientific stuffs. Let’s just take a look at my life. Few years ago, I used the typewriter to write papers. Now, I am using a computer to write the paper. In the morning, the alarm clock wakes me up. I turn on the faucet to get water to brush my teeth. I pour out already brewed coffee from programmed coffee maker. I drive a car to get to the places. I wash my cloth in washing machine and dry them in the dryer. I don’t wear eyeglasses anymore because I am wearing contact lenses. Furthermore, this winter break, I am planning to have Lasik operation to correct my vision permanently. Then, I could say goodbye to my contact lenses. This is the sketch of my life, but just a part. I am living in the garden with full of scientific devices that I could no longer live without.

Wow. How did we get here from the Garden of Eden to the Garden of Science? What makes the world to become such a science oriented society? What drives human beings to seek scientific knowledge of the world? Since I am a Christian who confidently believes in God’s creation of the world according to the Bible. I believe that it is a natural characteristic of the human being to seek more knowledge. The desire for more knowledge actually evolved into creating the technologies that became part of our lives. In addition, I believe that the knowledge itself is actually given by God along with the power to use them. Finally, I believe that knowledge is a good thing to posses, however; we need to be more careful and humble of using the knowledge that was given to us by our creator as a gift.

When God gave the Garden of Eden to Adam and Eve. He said, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die” (Holy Bible, New Revised Standard Version, Gen. 1.16-17). Adam and Eve knew the rules and consequences. However, they ate the forbidden fruit. Why would they do such a thing when they knew the consequence, which is the death? Adam blamed Eve, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate” (Holy Bible, New Revises Standard Version, Gen. 3.12). Eve blamed serpent, “The serpent tricked me, and I ate” (Holy Bible, New Revised Standard Version, Gen. 3.13). These are not very convincing. I don’t think that anyone would jeopardize his or her life so easily, without any question. Furthermore, it is not that Adam and Eve didn’t have anything to eat. I believe that there must have been a strong force that drove Adam and Eve to take the forbidden fruit. I believe it is the natural characteristic of human beings for wanting to obtain more knowledge. Why else would Adam and Eve take that forbidden fruit? They had everything they needed in the Garden of Eden. Yes, the serpent lied to Adam and Eve that they will not die by eating the forbidden fruit. The fact that Adam and Eve believed serpent over their creator God shows their strong desire of wanting to eat the forbidden fruit. Adam and Eve desired to have more knowledge (by eating the forbidden fruit), they blindly sacrificed their lives.

In Mary Shelley’s work, “Frankenstein,” the protagonist, Victor Frankenstein, talked about his eagerness and ambition to create a ‘human being’ of his own. Frankenstein apparently had the knowledge and discovered the technique to bestow animation upon lifeless matter (232). Through this experiment, Frankenstein said, “I might in process of time renew life where death had apparently devoted the body to corruption (232). Although, Frankenstein had started the experiment with such distinguish purpose. As the story develops, Frankenstein seemed that he had lost the purpose of his doing. Moreover, Frankenstein devoted all his time and emotional domain over his project. What drove Frankenstein to be so ambitious? Isn’t it the natural characteristic of human beings for wanting to have more knowledge? Frankenstein is a scholar who posses more knowledge than ordinary people. He must have known that what he was trying to accomplish is against the law of nature. Yet, it did not stop Frankenstein to pursue his goal of creating a human being. I believe that it is the strong force of wanting to acquire advanced knowledge and techniques drove Frankenstein to over look all the important aspects of life. Frankenstein became insensible to the beauty of nature around him. Frankenstein became isolated from his loved ones. It was not the benefit of the outcome or the purpose of the project, which drove Frankenstein to become so obsessive of his experiment. It is that characteristic we all posses to have more knowledge.

Then, what was the beginning of the knowledge? When did we use our knowledge for the very first time? In the Bible, “So out of the ground the Lord God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name (Holy Bible, New Revised Standard Version, Gen. 2.19). This leads me to believe that the man was created with the intelligence and knowledge and he used his intelligence to name all the living things. Just imagine, Adam is walking around and naming all living things. Adam is pointing at each living things and say, “You are eagle, you are pigeon, you are alligator,” ……and so on. How fascinating! This is a beginning of our knowledge. In addition, God first gave Adam a power to name every living creature. Then, God gave man a power to use and care for the world, “…have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth” (Holy Bible, New Revised Standard Version, Gen. 1.28). So there, we human beings have dominion over the world with the knowledge to use. From this, we created more and more things to accommodate our lives. Since it is one of human beings’ characteristics to seek new and more information. We have never stopped. As Frankenstein has never stopped until he completed his creation. As a result, our lives are filled with advanced technologies and sciences, far from the Garden of Eden.

Finally, then is the knowledge dangerous thing? In her work, “Frankenstein”, the author, Mary Shelley, wrote, “… how dangerous is the acquirement of knowledge, and how much happier that man is who believes his native town to be the world, than he who aspires to become greater than his nature will allow” (231). On the other hand, in the essay, “Enemies of Promise”, Bishop said, “Resistance to science is born of fear. Fear, in turn, is bred by ignorance” (241). Personally, I agree with Bishop that we need to be educated to understand the science. In the past, I have criticized the science for a lot of things happening in our society. However, I admit that I do not posses the knowledge to understand the science and how it works. Yet, I say I cannot live without the high-techs that science has developed. I believe that knowledge is a good thing and it was given to us as a gift with good intention because it came from God. The nature of God is goodness.

Now, we need to focus on how we can utilize our knowledge. The intention was to benefit the human beings. However, are we all benefiting from the science? Majority of the products that science has developed are benefiting our lives. But, we must admit that there are side effects of these products. Some of those side effects are; pollution of the earth, air, water, which is hazardous to our health. There are more diseases and disabilities such as cancer, aids, birth defect, autism, and many more. I suggest that we need to control the desire to develop more high technology stuff. Before we engage in other scientific project, we need to stop and invest enough time and knowledge to see what are the possible side effects might be. I suggest that we use science to fix the side effects and negative outcomes rather than developing another product or method.

All in all, I do enjoy all the machines and devices that science has developed. I do not want to live without them either. I have no doubt that God has given us the ability to come up with all the technologies. I also believe that God made us to have ambition to seek more knowledge. Most of all, God gave all the power upon human beings. He wants us to have dominion over the world for our benefit and enjoyment. Therefore, we came this far. Now, I wish we can stop for a moment and look back. Ask ourselves a question, “Is everything we have created benefiting us? Are we enjoying them all?” Hopefully, our answer is yes. Even if the answer is not. Even if we are horrified by our product and want to run away from our creation as Frankenstein had felt. It is still good news that we have scientific knowledge to overcome our difficulties and our failures. We must invest more time and money to research what can benefit the human beings by using science. We must put our efforts to use science to serve as tool to clean up the side effects and negative outcomes. When it is all done successfully, I can envision the future and perhaps witness God’s approval, “And God saw that it was good” (Holy Bible, New Revised Standard Version, Gen. 1.12) that He gave us a gift of knowledge.

Science vs God

...is one topic that has been in debate over a decade. The fundamental difference if put it simply, science is based on evidence and religion is based on faith. Certain people believe that God exists and miracles do happen and we all have faith in God for what he does. On the contrary, certain people believe that man has evolved through science and according to science, many factors could not have had an explanation as to how it has happened and hence cannot be believed, as science gives an explanation to every events occurring. When an individual has faith in something, he does not require an evidence to prove what is happening and this is opposed by a scientific mind-set. People analyse a situation through various thinking and it could based on either religious believes or on scientific thinking and this is where the confusion arise. A beautiful debate is being illustrated between Albert Einstein and his student at one of his class sessions. Einstein was an atheist and hence he believed that there is no God and only science existed. In one of his classes a debate accidentally starts related to the topic God vs. Science. He asks one of his students, who are a firm believer in God to answer to his questions. His questions were simple initially and he wanted to make sure that the student was a strong believer in God. He started the conversation by asking whether God was good or bad and what would the student do if he had the powers to heal a sick and dying person...

The Higgs Boson’s Conflict with Theology

...scientific discovery is also a religious discovery. There is no conflict between science and religion. Our knowledge of God is made larger with every discovery we make about the world. –Joseph H. Taylor Jr, God Evidence According to Steve Paulson (2010) “The debate over science and religion is like catnip for anyone wanting to spout off about the improbability of God or the arrogance of scientists”(p.1). Since I was young I remember being told that no matter what I learned in science class about evolution, or the big bang, that God was real. According to Dr. Agustin Fuentes of Psychology today “There are some factions of Christianity whose leaders (and thus their followers) express adamant opposition to “evolution” and this is often used as the key example in the science vs. religion conflict.” Examples of controversial scientific discoveries such as cloning, and genetic manipulation, are considered to be inhumane. In my opinion God created science for humans to better understand the world he created, and according to Steve Paulson (2010) Albert Einstein shared my belief demonstrated when he stated “ Science without religion is lame; religion without science is blind” (p.3). It is well known that some people believe that the universe was started with the big bang as well as the subsequent reactions that followed. This brings into the discussion the Higgs Boson more commonly known as “The God Particle” The primary function of the Higgs according to Leon Lederman (1993) is...

Creationists vs Evolution

...with my father being a pastor of a church in the community. I was taught the bible and the book of Genesis. The different beliefs that were instilled in me were to believe that God created man and woman. In evolutionary or ecology classes, we are introduced to the theory of where man came from amoeba-like organisms, or even that we evolved from apes. How did life of origin arise? The components of evolution might explain how, but Creation gives a reason to believe why. Origin of life’s existence, as well as age of the earth is a question that is looked under a microscope and probed through both biblical theories, as well as scientific. Looking at difference evidence, acceptance of creation is growing even in spite of scientists trying to prove evolution. Within this paper, there will be different pieces of evidence and facts supporting each theory and there will be an argument, within my conclusion, on which theory I support. The theory of creation can be explained through various books in the bible. Creationists use the Bible as the truth for which they believe the origin of life came into existence. In bible studies and bible school, we were taught that God took clay from the ground which he shaped to a man that he called Adam. A verse in the King James Version, of the Bible, mentions “and the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” Then, the Lord made a garden as Adam’s place of residency...

Teaching Creation and Evolution in Schools

...between these two issues? The lack of evidence makes creationism hard to believe, and many holes in the evolution link makes that hard to believe. Theories of human evolution cause disagreements. Each theory has its own evidence to prove that its right, but lack of enough evidence to prove the others errors. Most of the theories that try to explain the human existence are labeled as creation theory, naturalistic evolution theory and theistic evolution theory. Naturalistic evolution theory states that evolution is a force and not controlled by a god, goddess or some other type of deity. Theistic evolution is a combination of both creation and naturalistic theories. To understand the struggle between creationism and evolution you must first understand creationism. Creationism is the theory that all life was created by God. In the book of Genesis you will find the story when God formed man from the dust of the ground. God also created all the galaxies, planets, animals, plants and everything else. In that same book you will find the story of Noah and his ark saved all the species, which are here today, from the great flood. In this teaching the earth is not over 10,000 years old. To understand creationism you must understand evolution. Evolution is the theory of the Big Bang. The theory of evolution suggests that...

Atheism vs. Catholicism

...Atheism vs. Catholicism For some reason or another Atheists feel they need to beat you over the head with their view of creation, laws, the Bible, God, the Constitution and more. They consistently tell Christians that they are wrong. Atheists, agnostics and other nonbelievers will always seem to quote science, scientists, NASA and others. Using scientific theory to disprove the Bible is like using gasoline to put out a fire, The reverse of that would be using the Bible to prove the existence of UFO’s, it cannot be done. The Bible is “the” source of explanatory information about all of the things that the Atheists attempt to debunk with scientific theory. Atheists seem to have a mental block about the reality of the real truth about who is responsible for even their own existence. They are more than willing to put their trust in Charles Darwin who wrote a book 150 years ago titled “On the Origin of Species” and is now commonly known as the Theory of Evolution. Atheists have no problem putting their full trust in the fact that we all descended from a common ancestor, which is what Darwin’s book was really about. Even though there is no proof to this date that Darwin was correct 150 years ago, when labs and science were in their infancy; Atheists believe he was right but they just cannot believe the Bible. The Bible is filled with witnesses to the events describe in it. Additionally, it is filled with witnesses to prophecy; both to prophecy as it was being fulfilled...

The Existance of God

...Running head: Existence of God The Existence of God Abstract There is always been a curiosity about God, the creator. Some question if it even exists as an entity. Others question of the operation of God, wondering if God is a single being or an umbrella term that describe multiple individual entities that operate as a unit. Regardless of the specifics, there is always been the argument and research/conversation about the existence of a universal God, and a continual search for evidence to prove once and for all if indeed God exists, or not. In this paper I plan to discuss the above topics, and provide evidence to support my assessment. The social influence on religion, the mind and science will be the primary area of focus. The Existence of God Statement of Research Problem Intuition can be defined as the ability to understand something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning (Wikipedia). I will also include a personal definition for intuition: Intuition is the inherent spiritual compass that is used by man to guide his/her steps along the proverbial pathway of life. Some to validate their reason for belief in religion uses this spiritual compass. Others believe it only exists on a personal level, independent of any internal or external spiritual influence. Some believe in a spiritual element of life, which is something we cannot see, taste touch or feel; a “God” component that allows us to understand the ethereal...

Comparative Essay Original Creation of the Earth

...Elements of Earth Science Comparative Essay Original Creation of the Earth Rhonda L. Carter 9 March 2014 PHSC 210-B13 LOU | | Introduction It should be easy to say that the Earth was created by a higher power. For a Christian this higher power is God. The Bible gives us the six day creation of the heavens and the Earth and all that dwell upon it. For anyone else, the higher power is some unknown power that science is still trying to figure out. There are a lot of theories in science about how the Earth was created. One of these theories is the big bang theory. The essay will compare the two theories and show how different they are. Old Earth View In the old Earth view of the original creation of Earth we are told about the big bang theory. In order to explain this theory one must understand what science says that it is. “According to the big bang theory, the universe began by expanding from an infinitesimal volume with extremely high density and temperature. The universe was initially significantly smaller than even a pore on your skin. With the big bang, the fabric of space itself began expanding like the surface of an inflating balloon – matter simply rode along the stretching space like dust on a balloon’s surface.” (Takahashi, 2000) When dealing with science, one can see that scientists do not believe in a divine power such as God. They deal with their theories and will tell you that they believe something was created, but not that it was created by God. Only problem...

Creation

...“We constantly thank God that when you received from us the word of God’s message, you accept it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God.” (1 Thessalonians 2:13). Therefore, my only belief is that of faith and my faith is in God and him alone. The bible is a history book of the universe. It tells us how the earth came to be and how God has a person and plan for everything in the world he created. However, the bible is much more than a history book. It is a written inspiration of God. Since God is the one that created the Earth, then he is the only one that knows how old the earth really is, therefore, instead of listening to human( evolutionist) who is imperfect and makes many mistakes, I put my faith in God and his word and take the creationist view. Although its been said that the bible isn’t a science book, it is a good thing because all the science books that I have read are based on human knowledge and ideas. These ideas have been changed over and over again because people discover new evidence and realize that they have been wrong before. That is why a new science or history book has to be written again. For example, in old history books and in the days of Columbus people thought the world was flat and people where afraid of falling off the earth. It wasn’t until an explorer traveled around the world to prove it was round. (Siegel, 2011) However, if they would have turned to the bible, Isaiah 40:22 states “circle of the Earth”...

Religion was and is the way one has their own beliefs, what to them is truth, to which way they should be lead in. Each religion believes in something different from another and most of them all believe in one God, only a few does not. The world had outgrown just one religion therefore, when Martin Luther and King Henry decided to separate themselves from the church many more had emerged. Secularism identifies it’s self as something called 'religion' and separate it from the domains of the state, the economy and science. Secularism is the realization that God’s will be done plus the natural evolution of universal morality. Christianity was the spiritual identity of one’s soul, beliefs, spirituality, social, and political foundation. Then those from other countries believed that Christianity provided spiritual connections, organizing principles, and inspirations for their identity. Believers were united by their faith as well as...

Philosophy Response

...Anh Thu Doan Philosophy Theology A Response Paper 3 Science vs God The Darwinian Evolution has raised one of the most popular debate of the century about whether or not God create Earth. The notion that God is the creator of all living things is the most basic criteria in Christianity; it is also mentioned in the book of Genesis. Darwinian Evolution, however refute, proving that it the nature force itself urges animal to reproduce and evolve to new species. In Session A, there is an ongoing debate over Biology and Chemical reaction role in explaining the world around human, even human themselves. However, the idea of there is a chemical reaction that make me feel a specific way is just wrong, at least to me, in some way. In science, the assertion will likely to be begin with: when a person feel happy, the enzyme A will transfer to a particular part of your body, etc But how do you know what you should feel at a situation? Science can answer the process but could not lead to the very beginning. If every person can be explained by chemical reactions, and that chemical reactions account for every human’s body, what make a person A different from his friend B; and how do people have so many personalities. Definitely, there is something that explain the variety of human’s traits, a part that even science cannot explain, a soul. Biology and Chemistry, to get to a discovery, have to go through lots of experiments on individuals, to find the resemblance in their reactions and...

Nature vs. Nurture

...Nature vs. Nurture in Psychology PSYCH 101 Nature vs. Nurture in Psychology What makes you think, feel, and behave the way you do? Were you born predisposed to live the life you are currently living, or were you born a blank canvas upon which your experiences gave shape and expression to the person you are today? These are the types of questions the Nature vs. Nurture debate has posed and scientists have probed for over a century. In this paper we will look at some of the aspects of this debate the scientific community does not attend to, or dismisses, the origin and history of this debate, the essential characteristics around which this issue is debated, and where scientists are today in understanding this issue. What are your thoughts on the Nature vs. Nurture argument? Sir Galton wrote in his book English Men of Science (1874), “Nature is all that a man brings with him into the world; nurture is every influence that affects him after his birth,” (p. 12). I have been led to believe that our biology (nature), our environment (nurture), and our cognitive abilities all interplay and influence our resulting personality and other existing traits. We are, as Myers (2012) continuously asserts, biopsychosocial beings (p.124). These aspects of our existence work in accord to actuate the developmental potential written into our genetic code. Where I think there is a deficiency in the theories proffered, in attempt to answer the Nature vs. Nurture...

Contradicting Scientific Methods

...Faith vs. science. Is there a contradiction between faith in God and science? Faith in God and belief in science will never contradict if God, in fact, exists and is the Creator of the universe. If God is the Creator of the universe, and there is ample evidence that He is, then science is just knowledge or a system of knowledge covering general truths about His creation. If God doesn't exist, then faith and science will contradict since science is the search for facts about the cosmos. For those with faith, however, science can be one of our greatest forms of worship. Science is mankind's attempt to understand how the world works. The scientific method is one of the greatest tools to accomplish this. It starts with a question about the world. Then background research, a hypothesis or educated guess about the research, an experiment, analysis to determine if the hypothesis was correct, and the report of the results. If the hypothesis was correct, the cycle is finished. If not, another hypothesis is put forth, and testing begins again. The scientific method infers that a provable fact will be repeatable and verifiable—that other scientists will come up with the same answer if their experiment is performed in the same way. There is nothing unbiblical about the scientific method as such. God made light, matter, water, plants, animals, and humans. We honor Him when we endeavor to understand His amazing creation. We also learn more about Him, about His wisdom and power and...
