...One of the major shortcomings of science supposedly is a lack of communication between scientists and the general public. Many argue that too often, science is only presented in written academic journals that are not so easily obtained by the general public. This is discussed on a daily basis and was argued in the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, as well as in on-going debate about other scientific theories and ideas. However, people fail to realize a few things. One of the major things is that, in terms of an earthquake or tsunami, you simply cannot predict anything like that. You cannot blame scientists for not being able to predict an earthquake like a meteorologist can predict weather events. Scientists can study things like seismic activity and they can make assumptions as to what may happen should an earthquake of a high magnitude hit and cause something catastrophic like a tsunami. ...The way that I applied the steps of the scientific method in the activity, was first I made an observation that my car wasn’t starting. After I made the observation, I came up with a couple hypotheses as to why the car wasn’t starting, I came up with electrical problems. I came up with the prediction that if I changed the spark plugs that would make the car start. I than performed an experiment by changing the spark plugs. After changing the spark plugs, the car still wouldn’t start. The fact that the car still wouldn’t start after changing the spark plugs refuted my hypothesis. I than came up with another prediction, that if I changed the fuses that that would fix the problem. After I made my prediction I performed the experiment by changing the fuses. After I changed the fuses the car started. The fact that the car started after I changed the fuses supported my hypotheses that the problem was indeed an electrical problem. A real life problem where I had to use the scientific method to solve it, was the morning when I woke up and made an observation, that after several attempts to dial out on my phone, I couldn’t dial out. After I made the observation that my phone wasn’t working, I asked myself the question why my phone wasn’t working. I came up with a couple of hypotheses to the problem.
