Screw Removal

In this short paper I will go over my thoughts on the article that was given to us for review this week. This week’s article was titled “Screw Removal, American Gunsmith, July 2015 By: Dick Maheu.” I’d have to say that I can very clearly see how this article might help us in the future. I haven’t had any significant issues with stuck screws or whatnot, but I think learning how to make any use my own screw jacks could seriously come in handy in the future.

Mr. Maheu began this article by making the statement that “If you have been working guns any length of time you have faced the age-old problem of screws that don’t want to budge. One of the easiest things to do is to get impatient, grab the nearest screwdriver available, even if it is the “right” one, and start crankin’.” I haven’t personally had too many problems with screws on firearms yet, But I’m 100% positive that I will while working in the gunsmithing field. Mr. Maueu made it clear that he “learned early on in my gunsmithing career to study this problem fully before laying out a plan of attack.” And stated that “a buggered up screw can be become a worse condition if the improper tact is used.” Unfortunately, I am all too versed at how going ham on a stuck screw or bolt can make a job go from 15 minutes to 3 hours in a matter of a few frustrated minutes. I was happy to see that we were going over methods of removing screws in this article. …show more content…
We also went over utilizing heat to assist in the removal of screws. I found it interesting that we covered drilling out screws, and finally building and putting together screw jacks. Until now I’d never heard of screw jacks being utilized on firearms. When I worked on aircraft I utilized EZ outs on aircraft panels, but I’d never have thought to use them on a pistol or revolver, so I thought it was a very useful subject to read

Gs1140 Module 3 Short Answer

...Adam’s perceptual blocks: 1. Stereotyping- if a person needs to unscrew a screw and they don’t have a screwdriver a person can use a butter knife, a coin, or even pliers. 2. Limiting the Problem Unnecessarily- an example of this would be if you are baking and you realize you need powder sugar and you can finely grind sugar in the blender to make powder sugar. 3. Saturation or Information Overload- finding out what was wrong with a car a good example of this. Adam’s emotional blocks: 1. Fear of Risk Taking- an example of this is not raising your hand to answer a question in class because you are afraid to not answer it correctly. 2. Lack of Appetite for Chaos- planning an event is a good example of this. You must be prepared for the chaos and just understand that at the end everything will come together. 3. Judging Rather Than Generating Ideas- wanting your idea to be the only one used and not being open minded. 4. Lack of Challenge- not wanting to do a math problem that you already know how to do. 5. Inability to Incubate- when you leave a lot of things to the last minute. Higgin’s hindrances: 1. Defining the problem to narrowly- not looking at the bigger picture. 2. Attacking the symptoms, rather than the real problem- not understanding what the real problem is. 3. Assuming there is only one right answer- not keeping an open mind. 4. Getting “hooked” on the first solution- not realizing that there can be more than one answer...

...(2000/2011) claim that the Robertson’s screw is better screw by providing concrete scientific evidence and using effective language and anecdotes to the general audience. The author start with giving information about Robertson and Phillips background and their early success and downfall, and he also bring some evidence and consumer reports to convince readers that Robertson screw is more practical. By explaining the two inventor’s characters, the author intentionally makes it clear that why Robertson was not successful in business although his screw work more efficiently. Rybczynski (2000/2011) describe that Robertson as unmarried person “A life-long bachelor” was rigid, perfectionist and (… was unwilling to share control over production) whereas Phillips was more flexible and wanted to share his patent with other manufactures. The author also makes his argument stronger by mentioning about world war and economic crises in that era. He states that World War II makes the Phillips screw worldwide; however, the World War I and bad economic circumstances had negative effect in Robertson screw. In the final paragraph Rybczynski (2000/2011) cleverly shift the tone and talk directly with the readers to show that he is a fan of Robertson screw and says” I must confess myself to be a confirmed Robertson user” (p. 468). By repeating the subtitle and giving the statement “Why not” at the last sentence reveal his support to the Robertson screw (Rybczynski, 2000/2011, p. 468). So...

Fasteners Industry - Competitive Rivalry

...plenty of tools. No less than 30 tools are necessary to manufacture just one fastener. New fastener manufacturers have to invest heavily in tools, which result in higher start-up costs. Due to the varied design specifications in assemblies, particularly in the automobile sector, fastener producers maintain a large inventory that caters to a diverse clientele. General application fasteners are catered to by the unorganised sector where brand and quality have little meaning and price is the main criteria for selection of the supplier. Though the fastener industry has been delicensed and is eligible for 100 per cent FDI under the automatic route.  Threat of substitutes NIL Indian fasteners industry comprises of nuts, bolts, studs, rivets and screws. There are hardly any substitutes for these products in the market. Bargaining power of suppliers Moderate - High There are three major steel fasteners used in industries: stainless steel, carbon steel, and alloy steel. Steel industry in India is highly oligopolistic dominated by few big players such as SAIL, TATA steel, JSW steel, Essar steel and Ispat industries. Such oligopoly and government policies over import and export gives steel suppliers enough power to maintain relatively higher market price(except SAIL) and hence enjoy considerable bargaining power as a supplier. Bargaining power of buyers High The automobile industry is the largest consumer of fasteners. The other major user-segments are textile machinery, railway...
