Buckling Up Your Seatbelt It just could not get any easier for many people, get in a vehicle and fasten their seatbelt. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (2014), the use of the seatbelt can reduce the risk of a serious injury by 50%.” Yes, using a seatbelt can get annoying at times with it getting stuck, locked in place, or even it getting on a person’s nerves with it rubbing against their neck and ears .Many people may argue about their reasons for not wanting to wear a seatbelt and many have a doctor’s note giving them permission to not wear a seatbelt, but in the end a person is saving their own life by buckling up. With more car crashes happening in Texas, the use of a seatbelt might help reduce the number of deaths that arise from a car crash. Each and every state has different laws with regulations on the use and nonuse of seatbelts. It is stated in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, that currently thirty three states in the United States have primary seat belt laws (IIHS, 2014). ©Insurance Institute for Highway Safety
What is a primary seatbelt law? A primary seatbelt laws allows a police to stop and ticket a motorist is the driver and passengers are not buckled up, National Conference of State Legislatures (2013). The state of Texas is one of the thirty three states that has mandatory seatbelt use laws. Under Texas State Law (TEX TN. CODE ANN. § 545.413: Texas Statutes - Section 545.413: SAFETY BELTS; OFFENSE), a person commits the offense if the person is occupying a seat equipped with a safety belt ad is not secured by a safety seat. For the state of Texas like other states, the law requires for all passengers in the vehicle to be buckled up, yes backseat passengers are required to as well. A person pulled over and not wearing a seatbelt can be fined up to two hundred and fifty dollars. Would you rather use this money to buy other items than use it all to pay a ticket? The person or people who get into a vehicle surely do have the choice to use or not use a seatbelt while driving or riding along as a passenger. Some people may just get lucky in the event of a car crash, while not wearing a seatbelt and some might not get so lucky. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (2014) states, “The consequences of not wearing a safety belt can greatly affect your family and loved ones.” In reference to the Texas Click It or Ticket Fact Sheet (2014),”Unbelted back seat passengers can become human projectiles, they can even kill or injure front seat passengers.” Many people never realize the seriousness of something until something horrible happens, such as a car accident and it is too late to make the simple change. Through observations it was said that teen drivers are more likely to not wear a seatbelt in a vehicle compared to adults. At a local conference in McAllen, Texas, Ruby Martinez (a Texas Department of Transportation Representative) stated, “According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (2014), teens are involved in three times more fatal crashes as all other drivers. Martinez also added, “When it comes to buckling up, actions speak louder than words, your kids are observing you as you drive it is a teachable moment for them.” ©SafeKids.org
Unlike most teens, adults are more likely to use a seatbelt in vehicles. However on the Texas Click It or Ticket Campaign (2014), it says that men use seatbelts less often than woman. Some of the reasons given for none seatbelt use by teens and adults were that wearing a seatbelt was inconvenient and uncomfortable, that seatbelts are not necessary when you have airbags, that they may cause injury in the event of a car crash, and that a seatbelt may cause a person to get trapped in a vehicle underwater or in a fire (buyautoinsurance.com, 2013). Not only are seatbelts necessary for adults and teens, but children and babies also need to be buckled up. The Department of Motor Vehicles Website (2014) states that in Texas a person must secure any child under 8 years old in a federally approved child car seat while operating the vehicle, unless the child is more than 4'9" tall the child does not need the car seat or booster chair. The loss of a child is a great tragedy for anyone. As said by the National Highway Traffic Administration (2014),” If you do get in an accident, having your child properly secured in a child safety seat can reduce the risk of death by 71 percent for babies and 54 percent for toddlers.” The use of car seats are highly recommended by many people everywhere for the very safety of the child but not all people listen to these laws. On July 11, 2014, a local news station reported of a car accident involving the death of 2 children (Woman,22,charged,2014). KWTX reported of an accident involving a family of four, a mother, father and their two children, a drunk driver crashed into the family’s vehicle. Law enforcement stated that the children in the vehicle were not restrained causing them to die on impact. Just think about it, had the children been wearing a seatbelt they might still be alive! Too many getting injured is nothing out of the ordinary, but losing their life because of simply not buckling up their seatbelt is not a good way to leave this world. Dictionary.com defines a seatbelt as,” a belt or strap in an automobile, airplane, etc., fastened around or sometimes diagonally across the midsection to keep the person safely secured, as during a sudden stop (2014).” Just as said the purpose of a seatbelt is to keep the passenger or driver secured. Death is one of the many outcomes of not wearing a seatbelt in a vehicle. The Texas Department of Transportation concluded that there was an estimated 12,174 people that survived an accident because of wearing their seatbelt. However there was still an estimated 3,031live that were lost, but could have been saved had they been using their seatbelt. Think about it, a person gets in a vehicle to drive to the store, the driver is not wearing a seatbelt. As the driver is driving down the road another vehicle collides with this vehicle, head on. The driver is ejected out of the vehicle and is lying on the street lifeless. It is at moments like these where people wish they could turn back time and do things right. So as much as it is emphasized everywhere, using a seatbelt is the best choice a person could make when getting into a vehicle. A person can save a life by using a seatbelt, reduce the risk of major injury, and even help prevent any injuries. Many states require the use of a seatbelt in vehicle as per law and through professional studies and tests a seatbelt has been proven effective in a car crash. Remember for many people a drive anywhere without using a seatbelt can be the last drive for them, buckle up!

Reflection I have really enjoyed this course. I have learned many things some in particular I have is now having a better understanding of what proper writing is all about. I am still trying to get a hang of developing an argumentive essay but with practice I will get the hang of it. Citation and research are one of my many improvements I have learned in this class. The final project has actually taught me the most. It has enabled me to expand my mind and produce better research and give my essays more information and development. There were many times that I just felt like giving up on this cause I would get writers block too quick, however I am glad I kept going and have, well will, now be completed College Composition II. Since I am currently almost complete with my Legal Secretary Certificate Program, I have seen through my legal classes that the whole job is based off of writing. I have been able to use the writing skills in this course for my other course and I cannot help but thank you Professor Pavesic for teaching me all this. I am fully aware of how serious writing skills are necessary for the job I will be getting in the future and can honestly say I am prepared for what is to come.

...Important Seatbelt Safety Facts and Tips Here are some seatbelt safety tips that you should know: • Airbags alone are only 42 percent effective at providing protection. The absolute best combination for adults riding in a car is a lap-shoulder belt with an airbag. • Check all the seatbelts in your car periodically for breaks, frays, looseness and workability. It will cost you far less to fix a broken seatbelt than it will cost if you're in a serious accident with a broken belt. • Most accidents occur during the day so buckle up and practice driving safety at work • One person to a seatbelt; never double people up. • Your shoulder belt should be worn close to your body and over, never under your shoulder. The lap belt should be worn against your body and low across your hips. • Pregnant women always need to wear their seatbelts. It will not in anyway hurt your unborn baby. In fact, if you're in an accident, wearing your seatbelt properly is the best way to protect the life in your belly. Seatbelt Safety

...to dive without a seatbelt, then got into a devastating accident which either left him or her severely injured or even worse, dead. Think of this, what if vehicle manufacturing companies implemented a device where drivers couldn’t start the car unless they have their seatbelt fastened. According to the CDC 33,000 people died in 2009 from motor vehicle accidents, half of those people weren’t wearing their seatbelts. If manufacturing companies did install these systems in their cars, think of all the lives that can be saved from half of those 33,000 people that we sadly killed. Through researching I found out that 1 in 7 people refuse to wear their seatbelts putting themselves in danger as well as others. Well how others? If you’re a backseat passenger not wearing a seatbelt and the driver slams on his breaks you might catapult through the windshield resulting in a loss of control of the vehicle which might make the driver veer off the road or...

Child Safety Seatbelts

...Introduction Vehicle crashes are one of the leading cause of death in the United States. As a result of traffic crashes, infant and children are most likely to suffer major injuries or die from fatal crashes. Numerous studies demonstrated that proper use of child restraint devices can help reduce the fatality rate in vehicle crashes. However, only a few number of countries around the world adopted some laws to implement the safety of the young children. Currently in the United States, child safety seats and seat belts law regulations vary by states and they are mainly based on the age, height and weight of the children. Many countries are yet to adopt this law that can potentially save the lives of many infants and children. In my country, I grew up riding in the front seat of the car with no seat belt on which is pretty common things to see in other countries as well. Infant car seat is unheard of to people and airbags doesn’t even work on most cars. Babies are cradle by someone while children will often sit on the lap or small children will be moving around while the car is in motion. It wasn’t until recently that all the cars in my country were fully equipped with working seat belts and mandatory seat belt laws were passed....

...This is Child Safety Month. Many parents are putting their children in harm's way without even realizing it by not installing the safety seat properly. In fact, it is estimated that 80 percent of car seats are not installed properly. Fortunately, there are many things you can do in order to make sure that your child's safety seat is installed properly. You want to make sure that you pick the car seat that is the appropriate size for your child. Keep in mind that newborns and infants need rear-facing car seats. Once your child has outgrown the rear-facing car seat, he or she can move to a forward-facing one. Most children can fit in a forward-facing car seat by the age of two. Once children reach 40 pounds, they can move to a booster seat....

If the issue is extrapolated to the economy, the loss of income and lives equate to a moderate yet significant portion of lost GDP. Thousands of people that contribute to the nations production essentially disappear effecting economic growth. Seat belt legislation is goverened by the states. Twenty-five states and the District of Columbia require seat belts for all passengers. All vehicles including buses are required to be fitted with what the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and Regulations (FMVSR) call a type 2 seat belt assembly consisting of a combination pelvic and upper torso restraint (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 2013). Currently, states are expanding their seat-belt laws to cover rear-seat occupants (Copeland, 2010). It is prudent for any organization to understand the mechanics, processes, and products they use or create. If a product or process fails, it is important the same institution initiates sound research to generate dependable data derived by professionally conducted practices that can be used reliably for decision making (Cooper & Schindler, 2011). To do this, organizations must clearly define the purpose, provide their complete research, apply high ethical standards, make limiting factors known, furnish adequate analysis, present findings unambiguously...

High School Safety

...Jose Dominguez English 28 Section #6913 Professor Sahgalp 17 April 2012 High School Safety The prevailing attitude that the American parents have towards high achieving schools is their one of the safest places for their children to be at. They believe that the can protect them from any harm. Polytechnic High School (Poly High) is among the list of those high achieving schools. However, the Poly high campus can improve its safety with a few simple steps: fixing leaks, better security staff and equipment, and controlling car traffic in the outside perimeter of school grounds. The first way to improve Poly High’s safety is by fixing any water leaks. These leaks are cause by constant rain or broken pipes. A water leak can hurt an individual, by making the ground area slippery as students walk over it without noticing. Also the humidity from these leaks produces the growth of mold, mildew, and other fungus-like forms. The mold and fungus can be very hazardous when making contact with it or breathing in the hazardous toxins it exhales. Lasty water leaks increase allergic reactions and asthma attacks. The humidity from the water not only grows mold, but It also attracts mosquitos, and increase pollen counts. Several hazardous effect can be simply fixed by just fixing the leaks. Secondly, the campus could be even safer by increasing and improving security guards, and equipment. Stated by school districts nationwide, every school campus must have at least two police or...

...and prevent it from buckling, when it is subjected to bending loads. Stringers give a large increase in the stiffness of the skin under torsion and bending loads, with minimal increase in weight. Other than that, fuselage must be able to resist bending moments caused by weight and lift from the tail, torsion loads caused by fin and rudder. Pressurization can lead to tension or compression of the floor-supports as well. The structural strength and stiffness of the fuselage must be high enough to withstand these loads. According to the British Civil Airworthiness Requirement, safety factor of at least 1.5 times the normal working load for aircraft fuselage structure must be used. Failure is catastrophic, the limit load occurs during every flight and the fuselage is not only subject to pressurization forces. The static strength of the fuselage therefore incorporates a larger safety factor. A reduced factor of safety from the stated factor will preclude failure due to creep and provide adequate protection against tear propagation. Besides, the structure must be able to support limit loads without permanent deformation. At any load up to limit loads, the deformation may not interfere with safe operation and this applies in particular to the control system. The structure must be able to support ultimate loads without failure for at least three seconds. Another important construction factor of fuselage is protection of passenger in crash. Transport aircraft carrying as many as 800 passenger...

Ahrens, MSIT Information Security Article Evaluation There are several ways to evaluate a website or article. Evaluating allows people, especially students; an opportunity to obtain a better understanding on the value of the objects that is evaluated. This paper will allow the reader to obtain information about one of the major errors in Information Security. Error: Believe it or not, people are still the biggest threat to information security. Most companies report that 78 percent of their errors are because of a breach created by malicious acts or negligence of either past or present employees. But, not everyone has to be within a company to end up with a system that has been breached. Systems can have breaches because of several risks that were taken by people in general. According to a blog [ (Dell - Andrea B, 2012) ], there are at least “10 risky practices employees routinely engage in that are directly related to information security”. The practices are as following: 1) Linking systems to an Internet with an unprotected wireless net. 2) Not getting ride of data on their system when it is no further needed. 3) Giving out security codes. 4) Reusing the identical security codes and screen names on various sites. 5) Using common USB devices not protected or encrypted. 6) Leaving systems logged on while not being in the office. 7) Misplacing...

Chilean Copper Mine Collapse

...Chilean Copper Mine Collapse Chilean Copper Mine Collapse A small copper mine in San Jose, located in north Chile, collapsed trapping workers underground. The mine collapsed on August 5th, trapping 33 workers in the mine. The coverage of this mine collapse came two long weeks after the traumatic event. Initially the incident did not catch any news worthy attention. Mine collapses are pretty common but the accident finally caught the interest of an editor, and then it went viral from there. The mine is approximately 300 meters deep. Rescuers had to drill a second hole to locate workers but there was no confirmation of any active life underground in the initial survey of the situation. There was a limited supply of what the miners would need down there such as water, food, and oxygen and it had been 4 days since the mine collapsed. There was a lot of speculation as to whether workers would be alive down there with the limited resources but rescuers worked at a non-stop pace to get to the trapped miners in hopes that there were survivors. A second cave-in the Saturday after the initial collapse, delayed rescuers for approximately 3 additional hours before they could resume their rescue efforts. The accident trapped workers for over two months at depths up to 2000 feet below ground. A tunnel gave way and the story was seen around the world as a miracle. The worldwide coverage was intense showing every detail of what Chilean Copper Mine Collapse Chilean...

This report attempts to apply key concepts from behavioural finance with a view to understanding the thought processes behind the decisions that were made. In the last decades there have been a lot of studies documenting the impact of psychological traits on the decisions made by managers. This report while touching on them, will not go into detail regarding the various technical difficulties encountered on the Deepwater Horizon and will instead focus on understanding the thought process of the various players involved. We will also briefly cover BP’s historical safety record as this will help us understand some of the behavioural factors in play within the organization. While BP was the principal on the Deepwater Horizon rig there were also other parties like Transocean , the rig operator, Halliburton, who operated in a consultancy position, Anadarko and Schlumberger. These companies played a part in the crisis and their performance and relationship to BP will be explored as well. BP’S ORGANIZATION STRUCTURE AND CULTURE BP under Lord Browne was a very silo based organization.
