If we possess a high level of gratitude, we often feel an emotional sense of wonder, thankfulness and appreciation for life itself. In Martin Seligman’s article Secrets to Success, he defines gratitude as “appreciating and thanking the people who have made positive contributions to your life” (285). I agree with this suggestion because individuals who exhibit and express the most gratitude are happier, healthier, and more energetic. In addition, gratitude, a key to happiness, can help build social bonds, strengthening existing relationships, and nurturing new ones. Think of it as this way, life is like a chain and we must keep the links strong. When we pass the kindness and wisdom on to another, it makes all of us stronger. There is nothing more powerful than an inspiring movie that leaves you wanting to be your best and try a little harder tomorrow. In the film The Pursuit of Happyness, Will Smith who portrays as Chris Gardner said, “Don’t ever let somebody tell you you can’t do something. Not even me. You got a dream, you gotta protect it. People can’t do somethin’ themselves, they wanna tell you you can’t do it. If you want somethin’, go get it. Period.” According to this inspiring quote, our path isn’t a simple one; it zigs and zags to many directions. When we set out a goal we are committed to accomplish, we will make lots of sacrifices in order to reach it. To add on, there will be people who will tell us it is a bad idea or that we cannot do it; however, it is up to us to surround ourselves with people who believe in us, support us, and ultimately to make the choice for ourselves that we are going to succeed. In his article Secrets to Success, Martin Seligman said that “goals provide structure and meaning to our lives and improve self-esteem” (286). I agree with this suggestion because like Christ Gardner, he had persistence, determination, and he never gave up despite his obstacles. At the end of the film, we find out that he excels at work, proves better than the rest with more will power then them, and ends up getting the job. This is what committing to a goal is all about. When we set a goal, we must do whatever it takes to accomplish it. It will take times to get there; however, we will get there eventually because our happiness will be waiting for us at the finish line.

Secret to Success

...Secret to Success Personally I have never felt that there are any secrets to success. Have you ever heard of any successful man who didn’t tell you about it? In my opinion, I believe that every success is lead by hard work and the ability to stay undeterred despite slight failures. Such attitudes are the reason why I succeeded too, in a way… Besides the achiever himself, there are always other personalities who guide him to success. These people are equally important as self capability. I had such people to guide me too. Those would include my parents, my teachers. (I do owe them a lot. Simply put, my achievement is a result of their hard work to put me on the right path, towards academic achievement rather than my own.) Without them, there wouldn’t have been anything worth a praise printed onto my results slip and I wouldn’t be writing this at the moment. Apart from the adults who played vital roles in my life. My peers also share a part in helping me to achieve what I did. They were constantly supportive and they were always there when I was distracted by failure, to motivate me and to keep me pumped-up to face the worst. Such were the secrets behind my success but honestly, do you really believe there are secrets to success? Well, think again. My wishes to the future achievers and hopefully your results are better than mine. P.S. If there ever is a shortcut to success, please inform me...

Secrets to Success

...Secrets to success It has been argued in different avenues that the meaning of success is relative. To some it means being rich, having a happy family, having a well paying job, owning a blue-chip company (The list is endless). The best meaning of Success that I have come across is that "Success is the completion of anything intended." In other words success is finishing what you planned to do. From this, success doesn’t necessarily mean being number one; it means achieving your target within the intended timeframe. The difference between those who succeed in life and those who fail are neither the number of shipwrecks nor the severity of the storms. The difference is in their persistence. It takes persistence to complete the journey. Success is a process. It is an incessant refinement of strategy until something finally works. Success starts with goal setting, and then goal setting is followed by action. Neither your goal setting theory nor your actions have to be perfect. A key to success is to start anywhere; over time, your vision will clear and your actions improve. Some say that success in any profession is due to luck, chance and hard work. There is nothing further from the truth. Many people work incredibly hard and put in long hours, but they are not successful. Hard work certainly contributes to success, but hard work alone will not make you a "top dog" in your trade or profession. So, what is the secret of success? Is it due to luck or chance? Is it due...

Diversification Strategies: the Secret of Southwest Airlines" Success

...Assignment 2: Diversification Strategies “The Secret of Southwest Airlines’ Success” BUS 508, Contemporary Business Determine how Southwest Airlines’ corporate culture differs from other airlines: From the time Herb Kelleher co-founded Southwest Airlines in 1971 his goal was to establish a company that cared about its employees, who would in turn care about and service the needs of their customers with pride. Southwest has created a fun-loving work environment that rewards and appreciates unique personalities and how they can enhance the customer service experience of their patrons. This is refreshing in today’s market and the main difference between Southwest and other airlines. The mission of Southwest Airlines is to ensure satisfaction of their internal as well as their external customers. The external, of course, being the traveler and the employee is viewed as an internal customer. Externally, Southwest focuses on customer service, delivered with “a sense of warmth, friendliness, individual pride, and company spirit.” Customer service is number one (#1) for this airline. It is displayed in their every movement. The airline’s president, Collen Barrett is quoted as saying, “Southwest likes to think of itself as a customer service organization that happens to fly airplanes.”(Smith, 2004) The airline is dedicated to their customers. When other airlines felt the economy crunch and decided to start charging customers to check bags, Southwest refused to......

Paths to Success

...Paths to success There are different paths and many theories that are helpful to get success. This paper discusses different paths of success such as 10,000 hour rule, Tiger mom and Tim Ferriss. It also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each success method. 10,000 Hour Rule: According to this rule, brain takes 10,000 hours to assimilate all that it needs to achieve true mastery. In views of Heshmat, (2011), the 10,000 hours rule translated into practicing 3 hours a day for 10 years, which is indeed a common training span for young people in sports. This rule suggested that success is the result of accumulative advantages. It is a function of persistence and willingness to work hard. It is because it is difficult to carry out any long-range plan and achievement of any difficult goal, unless people can make themselves persist at it. Advantage: The main advantage of 10,000 hour rule is that it leads to the perfection of people. It is because after spending 10,000 hours on a particular task, individuals build necessary skills and competencies that are necessary to do the job in a perfect way (Bell, 2010). Disadvantage: The main disadvantage of this theory is that it takes a long-term view of getting success. Concurrently, this rule also not describes the performance of a person, who spends less than 10,000 hours to a particular job (Martin, 2011). It also limits the growth of an individual, as he/she focus on a particular job for 10,000......

Leadership Philosophy: Victoria’s Secret

...Leadership Philosophy: Victoria’s Secret Victoria’s Secret (VS) is an American retailer of women’s wear from lingerie to beauty products. I chose this company for many reasons, one being that I purchase items from this company on a frequent occasion, and the others because they are just a brilliant corporation. Victoria’s Secret was started out in San Fransisco, 1977 by a man named Roy Raymond, who felt embarrassed trying to purchase lingerie for his wife in a department store environment. The store was meant to create a comfortable setting for men. In 1982, after five years of operation, Roy Raymond sold the Victoria’s Secret company , with its six stores grossing six million per year to , Leslie Wexner, creator of The Limited, for four million. Victoria’s Secret started to rapidly expand into malls throughout the U.S. By 1990, it became the largest American lingerie retailer topping one billion dollars. By 1995, Victoria’s Secret began to market their company by holding a lavish event called the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, which broadcasted on pimetime television for America to watch. On July 2007, Limited Brands sold 75% of their chain to Sun Capital Partners to boost up VS stores and Bath and Body Works units, which provided 72% of revenue in 2006 and almost all the firm’s profit. With such a widespread operation, there is an obvious need for employees to help the company achieve goals. Victoria’s Secret careers not only focus on helping the company earn......

Introduction to Business

...Required Responses: Chapter 13: Your book lists 3 "types of advertising" under types of advertising. List, define and provide examples of each. * Product advertising- is any method of communication about the promotion of a product in an attempt to induce potential customers to purchase the product. Advertisement usually requires payment to a communication channel. The general objective of product advertisement is to increase brand awareness or to demonstrate the differences between the product and competing products to induce purchasing. Example - Products or services that appeal to the general public are often advertised on radio and television because they reach a broad audience. * Institutional advertising - focuses on touting the benefits, ideas, or philosophies of your business, or its entire industry, to enhance or repair its reputation rather than selling a product or service. Since institutional advertising attempts to build a positive image, it's closely related to public relations. In fact, it's a form of advertising that may be used in a public relations campaign. Institutional advertising relating to an entire industry is usually funded and developed by industrial, trade or professional associations rather than individual businesses. Example- a tobacco company can use institutional advertising to produce an antismoking commercial that warns consumers of the dangers of its products. Beer and liquor companies can also run commercials that warn......
