Manufacturing Sector Trend Analysis

My assignment was to analyze the current state of the manufacturing sector in the United States, paying particular attention to trends in productivity, competitiveness, and employment. What I learned was a bit surprising and alarming, though, only if said trends continue.

With regard to productivity, in an article released by the Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation, productivity in the manufacturing sector declined by 0.1% in Q3 2013, as hours worked increased by 1.2%. That said, productivity in durable goods increased 1.1% and decreased 1% in nondurable goods.

It was the area of competitiveness that was most interesting to me. According to a 2013 report released by Deloitte, evaluating global manufacturing competitiveness, the United States did not hold the top position. As was described in that article, of the top ten countries, five are developed nations whereas five are developing nations and yet, in five years, three developing nations will likely occupy position #2 and #3 respectively. The article points to “talent-driven innovation” as the key component to a nations competitiveness. In fact, the Deloitte article goes on to state:

“Talent-driven innovation is deemed the most critical driver of a nation’s competitiveness. Catapulting into the second most important driver position is the economic, trade, financial, and tax system of a nation.” (Deloitte 2013)

Current competitiveness | | Competitiveness in five years | Rank | Country | Index score (10=High 1=Low) | | Rank | Country | Index score (10=High 1=Low) | 1 | China | 10.00 | | 1 | China | 10.00 | 2 | Germany | 7.98 | | 2 | India | 8.49 | 3 | USA | 7.84 | | 3 | Brazil | 7.89 | 4 | India | 7.65 | | 4 | Germany | 7.82 | 5 | S. Korea | 7.59 | | 5 | USA | 7.69 | 6 | Taiwan | 7.57 | | 6 | S. Korea | 7.63 | 7 |

The Impact of Privatization of Public Services on the Public Sector Employment in the U.S.

...The Impact of Privatization of Public Services on the Public Sector Employment in the U.S. Literature review Privatization is one of the most discussed topics in the modern era of public management. Traditional norms of public management are getting unclear day by day because of the increased consideration for the efficiency and effectiveness of affairs of public sector organizations. One of the way governments adopted to increase the efficiency and effectiveness is the privatization of public services. Varner (2006) in his report titled ‘Government Privatization History, Example, and Issues’ given the definition of privatization as “Privatization is the process of transferring property from public ownership to private ownership and/or transferring the management of a service or activity from the government to the private sector”( Varner, 2006, p. 1). This paper assumes and proposes the privatization as independent variable and analyzes its impact on unemployment. So being an independent variable in a study it is very much appropriate to identify different aspects related to privatization. The significant contribution of Varner (2006) is that he has specified the forms of privatization as; “Complete Privatization, Privatization of Operations, Use of Contracts, Franchising, and Open Competition” (p. 1). In addition, he said that moves address the idea of reason what may be the causes ultimately ends up in privatizing the public entities. The provided list of seven reasons...

Marketing

..."Marketing ideas have made singularly little penetration into the centres of influence of the construction industry. To some extent this follows from the character of the industry as an agglomeration of service organisations, not without structural relationship to one another, but serving a clientele from which individuals seek service very infrequently." (Jepson & Nicholson, 1972: p.1) Although times have and are changing the above statement despite being written over twenty five years ago is still to some extent very true. The subject of this assignment is a construction firm that has recently designed and implemented a marketing management strategy. The objective of this assignment is fourfold, firstly the company’s approach to marketing management will be documented this will then be related to marketing management theory Then by analysing data collected through research the effectiveness of the strategy will be discussed. Finally using marketing management theory as a foundation recommendations will be made to identify where the initial strategy could be improved in order to promote future business development and success, in line with the strategic mission of the company. The organisation in question has strong foundations, since it’s incorporation in the mid fifties turnover has grown in line with inflation. In 1984 the Company was purchased by the son of the original managing director, he took up the role of new managing director. By the beginning of the 1990’s it became...

Preface

...second year MBA students are required to undertake a study on macro analysis of a particular industry and thereby, prepare a project report on the chosen industry. The objective behind preparing this project report is to relate the management subjects taught in the classroom to their practical application and to get insight into practical situation. Petroleum Industry is considered to be the back bone of an economy because this is the main source of energy till date. Any economy around the world would fail to advance a single step in the absence of Petroleum Industry. The Petroleum Industry is divided into two segments namely Upstream Sector consisting of Exploration and Production of crude oil while the Downstream Sector consists of Refining, Processing, Storing, Marketing and Distribution of petroleum products. The most important part of the Petroleum Industry is the Petroleum Refining Industry which refines the crude oil to convert it to the usable fuel. It also derives many derivative products out of the crude petroleum like natural gas, naphtha, etc which can be used in various ways. Hence, for these reasons, we have chosen the Downstream Sector of the Indian Petroleum Industry for our Macro Analysis project. As this is a Macro Analysis project, we have concentrated on the Indian Petroleum Industry and that too focusing on the Downstream Sector for our study and not gone into the in depth analysis of the various players and their functioning. This project is...

But recent joint efforts by the Ethiopia Government and aid agencies are helping to upgrade the traditional agricultural practices. This has significantly contribution to the reduction in number of Ethiopians suffering from starvation. The sectors of banking which comprises Insurance and Micro-credit industries are not open to foreign investors, though Ethiopia had huge inflows of investment in other commercial agricultural sectors like leather and textile. The graph shows Ethiopian economy’s sector-wise performance from the year 2004 to 2010. The agricultural sector has seen constant decline from 65% to 30% chiefly due to minimal rainfall. Soil is not fertile for the harvesting, so the crops were not growing properly. In industry sector emerging as it can be seen from growth up to 60% in 2010 as compare to 20% in 2004. Envirenmental Scan

...adapt to rapidly changing external environment. Unfortunately, the lead time once enjoyed by decisionmakers to analyze and respond to these and other changes is decreasing. Traditional long-range planning models, with their inward focus and reliance on historical data, do not encourage decisionmakers to anticipate environmental changes and assess their impact on the organization (Cope, 1981). The underlying assumption of such models is that any future change is a continuation of the direction and rate of present trends among a limited number of social, technological, economic, and political variables. Thus, the future for the institution is assumed to reflect the past and present or, in essence, to be "surprise-free." However, we know that this is not true, and the further we plan into the future, the less it will be true. What is needed is a method that enables decisionmakers both to understand the external environment and the interconnections of its various sectors and to translate this understanding into the institution's planning and decisionmaking processes.Environmental scanning is a method of accomplishing this. Brown and Weiner (1985) define environmental scanning as "a kind of radar to scan the world systematically and signal the new, the unexpected, the major and...
