To start this essay, let me give a brief summary of the topic to be discussed. I shall start with some definition of terms to set the scope of my discussion. I will mention four ideas however I shall be focusing more on self-awareness because I believe that this is the fundamental concept upon which the rest of the ideas stem. Firstly, let me begin with self awareness which is defined as the capacity to perceive one’s strength, capabilities and limitations; in other words: insight. Secondly, we have self concept which involves multi-dimensional facets of oneself. One’s past, present and foreseeable future as well as how a person interacts with the people around him/her shapes one’s self concept. Next, we have self-esteem which is roughly the amount of pride one invests in oneself. Lastly we have self-disclosure which is both the conscious and subconscious act of revealing oneself to others. This may include but not limited to thoughts, feelings, aspirations, goals, fears and dreams as well as one’s personal preferences.
I believe that self awareness, self concept, self-esteem and disclosure are easily defined concepts. All of these boil down to knowing, understanding and accepting oneself. And when we talk about these things, the questions “why” and “how” often comes to mind. First, why do we need to know ourselves? The answer is pretty obvious. As you develop self awareness, establish self-concept, grow self-esteem and begin self-disclosure you are able to make changes in the thoughts and interpretations you make in your mind. Changing the interpretations in your mind allows you to change your emotions. By accepting and understanding our thoughts and interpretation processes, we will have a clearer picture of what we want to achieve. And this will undoubtedly help in making wise and sound decisions in our relationships and career. All of these aspects of self are cultivated through reflections, studies and interactions with other people as well as experiencing new things.
“Our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world as being able to remake ourselves.” This was a quote by Gandhi. Like I mentioned earlier, it is imperative that a person has an idea of who he is, what he wants and what he can do in order to contribute to the growth of his career and relationships with others. The most common problem that arises from lack of development of one or more of these traits is failure in work and relationships. A person unaware is like a freshwater guppy thrown into the ocean: he will not survive. If he did, he would feel out of element or more often than not unfulfilled.
The path to self awareness is not as easy as it sounds. It is often difficult to think about ourselves objectively. How we see ourselves and how others see us may be two entirely different things. There are ways in which we can develop self-awareness but I believe that confiding in a person whom we trust and encounter everyday can be a better way to help view ourselves objectively. By sharing our ideas and feelings and looking at them from someone else’s point of view, we can more or less gauge ourselves. We can also develop self awareness by sampling new experiences. We often discover new things about ourselves when we're in unusual situations, or facing new challenges. Our reactions or responses to new environments, new people, or new demands can help us understand how we deal with some of the more familiar aspects of our lives. However, rather than waiting for new experiences to arrive, it can be really valuable to look for them proactively. We can do this for ourselves by taking different types of vacations, or experimenting with new hobbies.
With high levels of self-awareness, we can find the right direction in life and build long and lasting relationships with others. If we are willing to be self-aware we can empower ourselves and transform our relationships and our lives in the process.

Self Awareness

...Self-awareness is the awareness that one exists as an individual being. Without self-awareness the self perceives and accepts the thoughts that are occurring to be who the self is. Self-awareness gives one the option or choice to choose thoughts being thought rather than simply thinking the thoughts that are stimulated from the accumulative events leading up to the circumstances of the moment. Self-Awareness Theory states that when we focus our attention on ourselves, we evaluate and compare our current behavior to our internal standards and values. We become self-conscious as objective evaluators of ourselves. Various emotional states are intensified by self-awareness, and people sometimes try to reduce or escape it through things like television, video games, drugs, etc. However, some people may seek to increase their self-awareness through these outlets. People are more likely to align their behavior with their standards when made self-aware. People will be negatively affected if they don't live up to their personal standards. Various environmental cues and situations induce awareness of the self, such as mirrors, an audience, or being videotaped or recorded. These cues also increase accuracy of personal memory Self-awareness will provide an internal picture of how you perceive yourself. Your self-image is responsible for your everyday relations to your family, friends and day-by-day acquaintances. A good self-image will make your life and the people around you happy...

Self Awareness

...Benefits and Obstacles of Self Awareness: 1. Benefits: Self-awareness is proven to drive success of leaders in what they accomplish and how they are perceived by others. 2. Obstacles: In spite of many benefits that self awareness bring to a leader’s success, many people still ignore to understanding themselves and deny negative feedbacks. They may see themselves as better as or worse than they really are. Inaccurate understanding of self may lead to arrogance or self-diminishment of leaders; therefore it affects the organizational effectiveness. This can occur due to several factors: a. Incompetence: The lesser the competence of individual to assess self, the worse would be the accuracy of self-assessment. Because we may assess ourselves inaccurately, self-assessment is not always treated as a reliable criterion to evaluate self-awareness. It requires individuals the ability to be free from prejudice and biased. b. Motives: It occurs when an individual is inability to accept the truth about self or fail to be dispassionate during self-assessment. The cause of this problem is that individuals are guided by several important motives that push them in one direction or another and the psychological safety prevents leaders to accept objective feedback (Sedikides and Strube 1997). c. Self-Presentation: Self Presentation is the ability to affect public perceptions and persuade followers to believe we are who we show to the outsiders. Leaders often do that...

However, in the study they also include a group of eleven normal adults to compare the results with. The method used in this study was to have the subjects describe their current personality and their personality before the disease. The first hypothesis was that patients with FTD would be the most inaccurate when describing their current personality. The second hypothesis was that patients who suffered from FTD would not only describe their current personality incorrectly, but they would also fail to acknowledge a change in personality before the disease. The subjects involved in the study were recruited from a dementia clinic in San Francisco. The researchers gathered a broad group of subjects that varied in race, sex and financial status. The subjects then went through a verification process in order for them to qualify for this study. The group of normal adults were recruited through a local newspaper ad and the rest volunteered. All of the subjects needed an informant for them to describe their personality. Therefore, the results would be more accurate and unbiased. Self Awareness

...Michele Smith 3/6/13 Professor: Guilfoyle NUR301 Self-Awareness Self-Awareness is having a clear perception of your personality, including strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivation, and emotions. Self-Awareness allows you to understand other people, how they perceive you, your attitude and your responses to them in the moment. As one develops self-awareness you are able to make changes in the thoughts and interpretations you make in your mind. Changing the interpretations in your mind allows you to change your emotions. Self-awareness is one of the elements of Emotional Intelligence and an important factor in achieving success. After taking this class I was able to truly understand self-awareness and how it can affect my life. Depending on where you focus your attention, your emotions, reactions, personality and behavior determine where you go in life. This class taught me many interesting things I never knew about self-awareness. Having self- awareness allows you to see where your thoughts and emotions are taking you. It also allows you to see the controls of your emotions, behavior, and personality so you can make changes you want. Until you are aware in the moment of the controls to your thoughts, emotions, words, and behavior, you will have difficulty making changes in the direction of your life. The two self-awareness’s that affect me and that I learned a lot from in this class were stress and personality. I tend to let the littlest things stress...

Self Awareness

...occasion, while in a meeting with friends, the question of the "limits of human understanding" arose. He spent almost twenty years of his life on the subject until the publication of An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, a great chapter in the History of Philosophy.[3] John Locke's chapter XXVII "On Identity and Diversity" in An Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1689) has been said to be one of the first modern conceptualizations of consciousness as the repeated self-identification of oneself, through which moral responsibility could be attributed to the subject—and therefore punishment and guiltiness justified, as critics such as Nietzschewould point out, affirming "...the psychology of conscience is not 'the voice of God in man'; it is the instinct of cruelty ... expressed, for the first time, as one of the oldest and most indispensable elements in the foundation of culture."[4][5][6] John Locke does not use the terms self-awareness or self-consciousness though.[7] According to Locke, personal identity (the self) "depends on consciousness, not on substance" nor on the soul. We are the same person to the extent that we are conscious of our past and future thoughts and actions in the same...

Bradberry Jim Canfield Rhetorical Analysis

...The video, "Travis Bradberry - Jim Canfield: Social-Awareness and Emotional Intelligence" explains that Social-Awareness is very important, yet difficult skills to achieve because it requires understanding of the others: what they feel, what they go through, how they understand, and how they react. In order to increase Self-Awareness, we need to pay more attention to the others than pay attention to ourselves. Self-Awareness requires observation skills in many areas, such as non-verbal behaviors, tone of the voices, perceptions, and perspectives of the others, tone (nuances) of the atmosphere, and requires compassion and empathy. In the video, Bradberry also explains that Social-Awareness is probably the area that many people score the lowest...

Deindividuation

...Summary Deindividuation account is the earliest major social psychological theories of aggression. Le Bon (1895), a French social psychologist and sociologist was the first to recognise how an individual’s behaviour changes when s/he is part of a crowd. The most important factor is anonymity. The more anonymous the crowd, the greater the threat of extreme action. A ‘collective mindset’ takes over and the crowd acts as one unit. The individual becomes part of the crowd and loses self control. ‘Deindividuation’ was defined by Festinger et al. (1952) as a state of affairs in a group where members don’t pay attention to other individuals as individuals and, correspondingly, the members don’t feel they’re being singled out by others. According to Festinger et al., individuals merge to the group, forego individuality and become anonymous when belonging to a group. Anonymity is the start of the process that leads to uncharacteristic behaviour in the individual. Being in a group causes the individual to be less bothered about the consequences of their actions. Zimbardo (1969) argued that there is more to deindividuation than just anonymity in a group or crowd. Diener et al. (1976) conducted an experiment involving over 700 Halloween trick-or-treaters visiting local houses in their Halloween costumes. Friends of the researchers put out bowls of sweets or coins that were labelled “TAKE ONE”. There were two conditions, the non-anonymous condition and the anonymous condition. While...

Iah206

...Che Hung Su Mrs. Noll IAH206-Sec 735 June 30 2015 Reflection Paper The story that I had chosen in The Wesleyan Anthology of Science Fiction is Eileen Gunn’s Computer Friendly. The objective of the story is taking about the virtual reality and it has been put the category of “Computer and Virtual Reality” in the book. In my perspective, the story is not just about the computer and virtual reality, it is talking about the utopias and dystopias. I know my opinions might not be right since I am not some professor or expert in the philosophy, but here is my thought. In the story, Elizabeth has been taken to a place to do an adaption test by her dad. Luckily, Elizabeth scores high point in the test so that she does not have to go to the “Asia Center,” where is a trash can to down all the children who have low score. And the story revealed at the end that Elizabeth’s brother, Bobby, who had better score than her has been put down, too. Only his brain has survived and it has been used as the hardware of a computer to maintain the system and so as her dog, Brownie, his brain has to put into the system for traffic regulation. To me, this is a horrify story because if this is our future, it is a dystopias. We are not living in a free will and even our lives’ purpose is serving as the hardware component of a computer. If we are not suitable for the computer, we will be trashed. Gunn does not give much about the background, but she has stated that the building that Elizabeth took...

This assignment has given me reason to look thoroughly at many of my personal challenges that if not improved upon could affect the level of my future successes personally, academically, and professionally. • Working with, understanding, and influencing others • Stress management and self control After completing the questionnaire and reviewing the workbook, I noted that in all except three of my competencies I scored higher than twenty. It is interesting that according to the self assessment profile it could be concluded that I overcompensate in some areas to offset the challenges I have in other competency areas. On the other hand these competencies may not be applicable for the role that I currently hold as an independent Branch Manager. I have considered that with regard to Relationship Management: Inspirational Leadership I scored 24. Yet Influence and Teamwork were two of my lowest scores. I know that it good leaders...

Kantianism is Kant’s view that that moral value was based on an individual using his or her own rational faculties as described in the text chapter nine. Faculties are reference to our intellectual minds. Kant believed a person needed to develop a clear understanding of the universal morals that are shared by all people with in all circumstances. His argument for defense is good will is irreducible source of moral value as stated in the text. Virtue ethics give emphasis to one’s disposition of self morals. The text describes a “virtuous character” to state that people achieve their moral base through making moral choices in time as our daily lives advance. The text refers that acting natural expressing moral principles is virtue ethics or a virtuous character. Utilitarianism vs. Kantianism is complete opposites. Kant is more believe that if a person practices good will and follows certain standards or moral laws they will have done well.
