Western intellectual Self-preservation

Hobbes believed that self-preservation was everyone's fundamental natural instinct. He believed it was essential to ground political philosophy on this basic principle.
“Among so many dangers therefore, as the natural lusts of men do daily threaten each other a, to have a care of oneself is not a matter so scornfully to be looked upon, as if so be there had not been a power and will left in one to have done otherwise. For every man is wishful of what is good for him, and despise what is evil, but chiefly the prime of natural evils, which is death; and this he doth, by a certain impulsion of nature, no less than that whereby a stone moves downward. It is therefore neither absurd, nor reprehensible; neither against the dictates of true reason for a man to use all his endeavors to preserve and defend his body, and the members thereof from death and sorrows; but that which is not contrary to right reason, that all men account to be done justly, and with right. Neither by the word Right is anything else signified, than that liberty which every man hath to make use of his natural faculties according to right reason. Therefore the first foundation of natural Right is this, that every man as much as in him lies endeavor to protect his life and members”
But because it is in vain for a man to have a right to the end, if the right to the necessary means denied him; it follows, that since every man has a right to preserve himself, he must also be allowed a right to use all the means without which he cannot preserve himself.
If in the state of nature man is free and good there is reason to question the need for authority and the inequality that comes from it. Rousseau writes “this sentiment must serve as the praise of your earliest forebears, the criticism of you contemporaries, and the dread of those who will have

Self Preservation In The Crucible

...In Arthur Miller's The Crucible, Self-Preservation is very common in the town of Salem. Self-Preservation is when a person protects themselves or someone else, whether it be by telling the truth or a lie. In the town of Salem many people use Self-Preservation to protect themselves from the consequences of performing witchcraft. However, others may use Self-Preservation to protect their reputation or image in society, such as Reverend Parris. He himself started, what is called a chain of self-preservation when he reported Abigail Williams and the girls performing witchcraft. This led to Abigail having to use self-preservation to protect herself from the consequences of witchcraft which later on led Elizabeth Proctor to protect herself and her...

The Crucible - Self-Preservation

...Self-preservation and the downfall of Salem Self-preservation is the act of protecting one’s self. It is often correlated with pain and fear and it is regarded as a basic human instinct. People often use self-preservation to protect their image and reputation in society, thus potentially having to lie and hurt someone else’s status in the process. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, many characters demonstrate self-preservation to avoid the consequences of their own actions. This results in prolonging the witch trials in the town of Salem, causing the destruction of the community. Reverend Samuel Parris is a prime example of a character that uses self-preservation throughout the play to maintain his high position in society. When he realizes that his daughter Betty and his niece Abigail danced in the woods and potentially performed witchcraft, he knows it can hurt his reputation to be associated with them, especially if the rumours of their blasphemous actions are proven to be true. In act one Parris speaks with Abigail and says, “I have fought here three long years to bend these stiff necked people to me, and now, just now when some good respect is rising for me in the parish, you compromise my very character" (Miller 11). The townsfolk already question his values and see him as an unfit minister for the town. Parris is afraid that the actions of his rebellious daughter and niece will destroy the name he has worked to build over the years and thus give the community...

Silence, And Self-Preservation In Night, By Elie Weisel

...In the book, Night, by Elie Weisel, there are three key factors to this book: silence, family, and self-preservation. All of these thematic ideas relate to the book, they have a great impact the prisoner's lives. Silence is a major part in this book. it can decide whether they live, die, or suffer. multiple times throughout the book the prisoners are silent. When they are silent it represents sadness, anger, exhaustion, and despair. For other silence means safety. For example, Eliezer caught his block captain with a girl, in order for eliezer to stay silent his block leader had him whipped 25 times. If Eliezer did not keep quiet he wouldn't be safe. At this time silence was the best answer. Family is an important aspect in this book, throughout...

"Government Should Preserve Publicly Owned Wilderness Areas in Their Natural State, Even Though These Areas Are Often Extremely Remote and Thus Accessible to Only a Few People

...a universal statement that should be obeyed always. I do not think the matter is quite so simple. • Preserving some areas of land may be more expensive than preserving other areas of equal area. A cost benefit analysis must be run to determine benefits vs. costs. • Preserving some areas of land may provide jobs near areas which have high unemployment or reduce pollution in areas which have high industrial output. Other factors for land preservation need to be considered. • Preserving wilderness that is accessible to many people is preferable so that people are able to enjoy the preserved wilderness, through hiking or camping in it. However, areas which are not remote could be better candidates for public recreational reasons. • Wilderness accessible to only a few people are typically preserved anyway. Although there are some political figures who suggest that wilderness should be exploited partially because few people are affected -- GW Bush and drilling in the Artic Wildlife Preserve. • Also need to consider how the preservation decision will benefit specific species of wildlife. ——————————————— "In any field of endeavor, it is impossible to make a significant contribution without first being strongly influenced by past achievements within that field." • Author's viewpoint goes too far. Conservation vs Preservation

...Conservation Versus Preservation Today, millions of acres of land in our nation have been fortunate enough to not be disrupted by the touch of man. Around the nation it is also always on debate about using the natural resources of those untouched lands to benefit the economy and man in some way. However, there are many who oppose doing this and there are also those who believe we should harness those resources, but in a way that is not damaging. These two beliefs are called conservation and preservation and are very different in the way people look at the land. Preservation refers to leaving the land and all the natural wildlife and plant life alone and not disturbing the natural beauty and natural cycle of life in the environment. Conservation means that the natural resources of the environment should and can be used without causing too much disturbance to the natural environment. The underlining issue here is which one should we be practicing? Conserve the land, but use natural resources that are available for us or preserve the land by not disturbing what was naturally created? Personally, I am a preservationist and believe there are far too little natural places left and we should protect those places and leave them be. A strong and notable example of the debate of conservation and preservation is the Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming. This national forest covers 3.4 million acres of land that has been preserved from the destruction of mankind. The Bridger-Teton National...

Anatomy of I, Robot

...a. Do you think it will be possible in the future to create a robot like Sonny? What are Sonny’s features that make him human-like? b. Is there any way to know whether a robot, who behaves just like a human, is REALLY experiencing feelings and moral emotions? c. Do you think a robot could be programmed to make moral decisions if it did not experience feelings or moral emotions? d. If a robot has an interest in self-preservation, should it be given the right to life (or, as we might say the right to ‘continued existence’)? e. What are Grau’s thoughts about whether or not it would be desirable to create a utilitarian robot? A. Sonny has his own sense of self. While the other robots are essentially a “unit” and act under Viki, Sonny is independent. This is more obviously shown by the fact Sonny had “killed” Dr.Lanning, something that broke one of the 3 laws Robots had to uphold. Sonny was able to reason, break the laws given to him, and essential be his own rational and sentient being. B. To a large extent no, there is not way to know. That is similar to trying to figure out where does an idea, or emotion come from for a human. While we can say certain parts of the brain are “used” depending on the situation the spark or origin of this behavior is really unknown. The best way to describe it I think is through a very famous Japanese Anime, the Ghost in the machine. If it is possible to somehow view this more abstract ghost then in theory, we should be able to observe...

Power of Success

...tragedy, Miller successfully depicts the human condition in midst of denying failure. The play unfolds around a washed- up salesman named Willy Loman, whose obsession with reaching concrete evidence of success, creates unfortunate repercussions on his family, and himself. Willys conviction that a man must not only be like, but he must be well liked (Miller, 1250), along with his uninterrupted focus on prominence, reflects on his two sons, Biff and Happy, as he infuses them with values of social status as well as future success. Willy’s sense of self value depends on the response of others. Such gestures of recognition provide signals that society is a comfortable home for him, one where he hopes to make his sons as happily at ease as he (Jacobson, 249). This is doubtlessly a mirage of security for Willy, as he desperately suppresses his inner motions of regret, and refuses to embrace his conscious identity. Ultimately, Willy Lomans self- delusion of success disabled him to obtain his true identity, and influence a displacement of identity in his sons. Most people in today’s society develop a constant necessity to better their lives, as well the quality of life for their family. For many, this necessity stems from their core beliefs of what a comfortable life should contain in our society, along with secure elements for their loved ones in order to flourish as human beings. Whether it is, health, security, education, or freedom, people pursue different values, which they feel...
