Self-Reflection Essay

When I first enrolled here at Trident University, I never thought I would ever be in the position to graduate. The idea of finishing college was a huge goal growing up but it was also my biggest fear. But after dedication and perseverance I plan to get my degree in a year. Getting this far in college was not easy, it took encouragement from family and friends. With their assistance they helped me reach this position. Many years ago I remember my parents telling me that in order for me to become successful, a college education was a must. They always told me that if I wasn’t in school then I would be working. Both of my parents attended college but neither of them finished. They did not want me to repeat their fate because they really regret not getting a degree. My grades in elementary school were poor because I had trouble paying attention to things that were not challenging. I tried to play sick just about every day but my parents were not falling for it. My favorite classes were gym, music, and art. Competing in sports is where I spent most of my time. The words of my parents and teachers went in one ear and out the other. School just wasn’t interesting to me. My senior year of high school I decided to dedicate myself to school work. I took school a little more seriously and paid attention. That summer after school I just wanted to find a job and start making some money. The thought of going to college for another four year was something I thought I could not handle. I got a job at Subway making sandwiches for customers. At first I thought how hard could it be? But every day I would come home exhausted. When I got my first tiny pay check, it hit me. I decided that manual labor was something that I could not do the rest of my life and I definitely could not support a family on that income. A job behind a desk in the air...

...Self-Reflective Essay Although it is something I would prefer not to admit to, I have always struggled and experienced some sort of hardship when having to write. The content hardly ever played a role; I faced obstacles no matter the topic or form of paper I had to write. Certain factors were able to better assist me when writing, however nothing was ever enough to perfect my writing, or at least, diminish the hardships I experienced. Throughout this first semester of literature I have, of course, experienced problems with my writing, however I have learned to identify my own mistakes and am beginning to better comprehend how to fix these mistakes. During the beginning of this past Fall’s semester, I had lost my confidence in my writing abilities. With my loss of confidence as a writer, came a strong desire to never write again. Still, the consequences of my loss of confidence further extended into my life and effected my overall perception of all things literary. I had no desire to read, and if I somehow felt forced to read, I would pay hardly any attention to the content. This influenced my writing in negative ways. However, I was still unable to recognize or identify the exact mistakes or flaws within my writing. Initially I had sought out the mistakes, but eventually lost hope and felt that there was no way to correct my writing. My horrendous writing skills were set in stone…or at least I believed so at the time. It was not up until I received the shameful grade of......

Self Reflective

...Developing Independent Learning is, I believe, the most important tool for the programme as it teaches us to develop the aspects of learning that are vital to us. Having dwelled on the skills that were thought to us, I have acknowledged my development as a learner. At the start of the programme I answered a test that evaluated my skills as an independent learner as scored a total of twenty-three out of thirty. As advised for the personal development portfolio, I was required to resit the same test again and to my surprise, I had scored twenty-nine out of thirty on this attempt. Having had my development clearly started in the form of grades, it has enlightened me to the success of the course and my success as an independent learner. I have noticed that my areas of concentration, motivation and deliberation have far increased. The variation of different classes that encompasses the IFP0400 module has given me good practise of my learning skills. Moreover it seemed to develop them into the skills needed at the University level. As the age of computers have taken over, the module gave insight into the workings of various programmes that were vital in use for future assignments and tasks. Microsoft Word and Excel were programmes that were taught to us in detail and with the relentless nature of the teacher, I believe that I completely understand the programme at a moderate if not expert level. The educational experience that was delivered here was not monotonous rather it was......

Self-Reflective Essay

...Self-Reflective Essay I narrowed my value list down to three values. My values being ranked in importance to me are:   family, honesty and striving for excellence.   Even though I only write about three values, I am very complex and there are many virtues that I hold deep to heart.   I value family first; I am a very fair person and know the influence of family cannot be overlooked in the workplace. Family and experiences mold us to be the worker that we are in the workplace. Family has helped me be the person I am today.   You can't change your family, so you must have faith in your family. I feel that my family values would affect my leadership style.   It makes me a more compassionate leader. Second, I value Honesty. I was raised on this value.   My parents raised us not to lie and we were taught strongly against it.   To be dishonest, shows poor character and low values.   I feel it’s a needed value to everyone.   Honesty definitely affects my leadership style. I am a fair and just leader.   I believe to treat others the way you want to be treated. I would not want anyone to be dishonest with me because I am an honest person. You have to believe that the person you are communicating with is telling the truth.   If not you will immediately take offense and be on the defense; and who wants to work like that?   I trust someone until they give me reason not to and feel they are honest people.   I will be honest and expect the same from others.   Honesty is a way of......

Self Reflective Analysis

... In the beginning of the fall semester my thoughts on this course was that it was going to be really pointless because I felt like I wasn’t going to learn anything that was going to be useful. But when we started gradually going into good conversation and started having discussions about things that would help us in life my thoughts began to change. What I found useful about cornerstone was the topics we learned and the discussions we had. I found the GPS assignment to be really helping it gave me a lot of help and made me more knowledgeable about college. And I found the True Colors activity we did in class helpful in the course also. Every single time we did a presentation in class I always left the class with something knowledgeable and useful to me that was one key reason why I love attending class. I like how the discussions we had made you think and put the way you think or how you act into perspective. I feel like what we learn will help us in the future as individuals because there’s not many courses you take in college that you can later in the future put what you learn to use. The topics about critical thinking helped me evaluate and rethink the way I handle situations. I also found the professor to be helpful also because every time we do have presentations he would give us examples on how he applies the topics we are talking about into his life. As a freshman in college you are basically clueless about college and don’t really know anything......

Self Reflective Analysis

... When school started back up this past September i walked in as a senior with a set of skills that i had already, only looking to improve from there on. I thought to myself that i already was a great writer and that i didn’t need to improve on much. I was oh so wrong, there was a lot that needed to be improved on and thankfully through the course of this semester i have been able to improve on those things. The improvements came about from the different type of essays that we had to write and it brought a whole lot of strengths from it. Although in the past years we have learned on how to write a lot of these papers this year we dove a little more into them. We took different approaches to them to get more out of them than we had before, such as the personal narrative. I have written a personal narrative in the past but this time it helped me improve because i could not just be basic. I learned that i would have to write more in detail for it be a quality paper, that i couldn’t just get away with writing it like a 9th grader any more. The improvement was just as small as having to do with the intro and getting better with my attention getters. It benefitted me because we have to write intos in all of our papers and if you write an intro that can’t grab the attention, no one will be interested in it. Even though i have written a million and one letters of appreciation to people that i'm thankful for, this time was a little different. It took on a different meaning this time...

Self Reflective Course Essay

...TRIDENT UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL NAME BUS303 Business Communication MODULE 4: Integration and Reflection Assignment: Self Reflective Course Essay INSTRUCTOR: This Business Communication course has helped me overcome my fear of entering the real world and preparing for my military retirement. Being in the service for all of these years will place a small amount of fear regarding entering the civilian workforce because of the leadership style you are taught in the military. However, with the tools I have gained from this class; I feel that my transition from military life to the civilian sector will be easier than I thought. We as military personnel have learned how to wear a uniform properly and how to greet personnel with respect but we have not been taught how to properly prepare for retirement. When asked to write a resume in this course, I felt this assignment would be a challenge because the first thing I thought about was “the future”. Asking myself what exactly does my own future have in store for me and how do I prepare. Immediately, I took this assignment serious; gathering my thoughts to put into my resume because what if there was no tomorrow for me in the U.S. Navy; what if I had to get out today “what would I do”. I really enjoyed this assignment along with the cover letter because it challenged me to “think, what if” and “how do I prepare”, so this really hit home for me. “The Tips for Writing Resumes” was a great source to refer to for......

Reflective Review

...20 Self-Reflection As they are intervening in complex human systems, capacity-development practitioners need to be flexible, adaptable and willing to learn from what they do. An important source of learning in real time is the processes and results of monitoring and evaluation (M&E). Bruce Britton explains M&E activities as they are commonly pursued and explores creative ways in which practitioners can use them for personal learning and selfreflection. He also provides suggestions on how this can be done under non-conducive organizational conditions. Monitoring and Evaluation for Personal Learning Bruce Britton By three methods we may learn wisdom: first, by reflection, which is noblest; second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest. (Confucius) Introduction Capacity development practitioners collaborate in efforts to improve the capabilities of complex human systems that operate and connect at different levels. First and foremost, capacity development is a process based on the assumption that better understanding and knowledge will bring about change. Also, the planning for capacity development interventions typically rely on variations of the Logical Framework Approach (LFA), which encourage careful thinking about expected outcomes and impacts. By its very nature LFA assumes that intended results of an initiative can be established in advance because the path that a capacity development process will take can be......

Reflective Log Tips

...Tips for Writing a Reflective Learning Log for an Assignment What is a reflective log? This kind of log is a record of your learning experiences, thoughts, feelings and reflections. It is not just a diary of what you have done, but a critical assessment of how you have progressed. It is less formal than other kinds of assignments - for example you should write in the first person. To be truly reflective you need to ask yourself some questions: • • • • • • What have I achieved? Have I made progress? Have I developed new skills? How might I use these skills in the future (at university or in the workplace)? How have I changed my learning style? What would happen if I continued to practice this new skill? Think about the last assignment you did.... • • • • • Were you satisfied with the result? How could you improve the process of planning, research or writing? How could you improve your marks? What new things did you try? How did you overcome any difficulties? The advantages of being a reflective learner Students who successfully keep learning logs often notice changes associated with reflection Accepting becomes questioning Information for this handout and presentation was taken from: Pulman, A. ...The Development of Self: A Comparison and Analysis of Child Self-Description Using Rosenberg Locus of Self Knowledge Abstract The concept of self is an ever developing process which begins from childhood. It accounts for the ability to initially identify ourselves using physical attributes and activities, progressing into descriptions which capture emotions and beliefs only privy to the individual. Open ended self-description questionnaires along with semi structured interviews were conducted with two female children aged eight and sixteen years old. Their responses were analysed and compared to identify whether a developmental trend existed. The results supported Rosenberg’s Locus of Knowledge theory; with age and experience children develop a self-reflexive sense of self separate to their caregivers. Although, methodical choices reduce the possibility of ecological validity. Introduction The general consensus amongst western theorists is the concept of ‘self’ as a progressive process. Fundamentally, the acknowledgement of self-existence, which Lewis (1990) refers to as the existential self. The awareness of ‘me’, the person, the ‘self-as-object’ or the ‘categorical self’ as described by James (1892) follows. This stage reflects a child’s ability to identify themselves, identifiable by others and socially categorised according to their relationships, gender and age. Cooley (1902) suggested ‘the looking glass self’ was another way people viewed their identities......

Personal Responsibility

...of the perspectives of others. Depending on what you decide can lead you on a road to success or failure, but it is the most crucial and important. Starting from your hygiene, eating habits, school, work, keeping your body in shape to just simple hobbies may have a big impact on your life's longevity and social aspect. The first step in building good personal responsibility, is by first realizing the flaws and mistakes that you have made, because although it is not an addiction we tend to create bad habits. From our early school years up until your set in your career we must have a schedule to keep us on track and at the same time develop self confidence and motivation to better our selves. Creating a physical work out routine will not only maintain your physical shape, but also provides more energy to the body acquiring more self motivation to keep active. Also while exercising your relieving stress from the body and the brain, establishing more space for knowledge and social view point, therefore, make it is easier to become more educated. When we think about how personal responsibility can be related to education we acknowledge that in order to succeed as a student one must form schedules to study and listen to the advice given to us by our teachers, hard work pays off. As a student eager to succeed in high school as well as college must know that asking for help when in doubt is also allowed. The Secret Life of Skin

...and nibble on nuts apply potions and lotions, don helmets and hats: All at the behest of my skin. Drinking too much, sleeping too little, lying too long in the sun and I am compelled to feel guilty.  Connor says ‘the skin is not a part of the body’ (Connor 2002, 4) and indeed, my skin is like a domineering despot. It petulantly exposes my neglect by painting dark circles under my eyes, smudging the glow and scattering blemishes.  It is the reflection of my soul, separate but inseparable from myself - my ‘body’s twin’ (Connor 2002, 5). It is this ‘twin’ (Connor 2002, 5) or my ‘immaterial, ideal, ecstatic’ (Connor 2002. 5) imagining of my skin that constitutes what Cooley described as a ‘looking glass self’. (described by Coser 1997) This concept states that ‘an individual’s self-conception result(s) from assimilating the judgments of their significant others’ (discussed by Mikala, 2012). What we see in this mirror is not our carefully considered actions and the complex thought process that leads us to take them; We only see this ‘shadow’ (Connor 2002, 5) which becomes more than simply the living tissue. It is branded with our outward identity. And so, how we perceive others to view us in turn influences how we see ourselves. This attitude is present without an actual witness though. The...
