Are we equal? Is racial discrimination a thing of the past? Are there lessons to be learnt from the campaign which lobby for Blacks to have the right to vote as depicted in this movie?
The movie is based on a period in the life of Martin Luther King Jr played by David Oyelowo, this period starts with him accepting the Noble Peace Prize. During this period Martin Kuther King Jr. campaigns for the black man’s right to vote in America. The film take us through the drama and tragedy of this period. This movie has highlighted that we might be equal on paper but to be equal in society we need to fight for it.
The movie tells the story of human rights violations and that of the civil rights movement and the struggle to register to vote black people had in America. The story of black man’s right to vote. Martin Luther King Jr. the charismatic civil rights movement leader, who just won the Noble Peace Prize for his work in ending segregation, however does that mean we equal. Annie Lee Cooper a black women who want to register to vote. President Lyndon Johnson who had to make tough decision.
David Oyelowo played the role of Martin Luther King Jr. very well, he did particularly well in the scenes in which he address large crowds. It felt that I was watching the actual Martin Luther King Jr. on Youtube, his portrayal of his character was just inspirational as the man himself. Oyelowo did very well filling the boot of such a great man, this was his first lead role in a movie. Another actor in the movie who stood out was Oprah Winfrey she embraced the role of Annie Lee Cooper, she was the correct person to cast for the role because she could identify with struggle of being a black woman. This is not the first time Oprah Winfrey and David Oyelowo have acted together in a movie, they worked together in the movie called The Butler.
The movie’s director, Avu Duvernay told the story of the people in Selma who wished to register to vote at the court in a manner which made one feel as if one was there. As if this was a documented account of what had transpired rather than a movie of what transpired in Selma. The music, costume and dialect used in the film gave it authenticity. This substantiated by its nomination for Best Picture for Academy Awards and vice versa.
The movie has similarities in our struggle for democracy as South African. In South Africa we were also discriminated against because of the colour of our skin and black people were not allowed to vote. I was emotional with the bombing in the beginning but it tied into the story later on as it was not just shown to show the attacks on blacks during this time but it had a purpose.
The movie co-produced by the Plan B production company who has produced movies such as The Pursuit of Happyness and Oprah Winfrey who has produced movies such as The Butler, both telling stories of overcoming adversity.
In life we need inspiration as we face daily struggles in our pursuit for equality in life. This movie reminded me that there is light at the end of that tunnel. Go watch Selma and be inspired by the story of perseverance.

Healthsouth Scandal

...Introduction Richard Martin Scrushy was born in 1952 in Selma Alabama. Richard is the son to Gerald and Gerri Scrushy. Gerald was a cash register salesman and Gerri was a registered nurse (Watson, 2005, p. 2). Richard worked until he became successful, wealthy, and powerful. He was able to obtain the American dream of family, security and wealth. In 2003, an accounting scandal threatened to change his career, his wealth, and his freedom. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed a civil law suit against HealthSouth Corporation and Richard M. Scrushy. The SEC charged that the company inflated their books by $1.9 billion since 1999 (SEC, 2003). The filing of these charges had a multiple impact on the stakeholders. The ethical dilemmas that caused the rise and fall of Richard M. Scrushy will be reviewed. Scrushy’s Beginnings Scrushy began his humble beginnings in Alabama. Watson (2003), biography of Scrushy reports he dropped out of high school and worked as a gas station attendant and later a bricklayer. He eventually returned back to school and earned his high school diploma. Later Scrushy enrolled at Jefferson State Community College in Birmingham. He did a year at Jefferson State and a year of clinical training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Scrushy graduated in 1974 as a certified respiratory therapist (Watson, 2003, p. 1). Once Scrushy graduated with the certification of a respiratory therapist, he began climbing the ladder...

...WORKING WITH ABUSED CHILDREN 1 / CHAPTER ONE The Abuse of Filipino Childr en Filipino families consider children as gifts from God (Bulatao 1975). They are persons who inspire love and affection and bring happiness and security in the twilight years of parents. Interestingly, children are seen as links to immortality because children pass on from one generation to another the family’s name, history, and heritage. Often, children are portrayed as being nurtured and properly attended to in their homes; however, Filipino children are not as secure and protected as they are ideally portrayed. The increasing number of street children who work on the streets or beg for alms from pedestrians and motorists belie such an idealized portrayal. Street children, among other things, are the most palpable reminder that all is not well with Filipino children. Reality reveals the many children who are denied even the most minimum of needs like food, love, nurturance, stability, security, and stimulating learning environment that will allow for their healthy development. Many Filipino children are rushed into maturity because early on in their lives, they are forced to contend with difficult problems and to take on adult roles and responsibilities. Media and popular and academic literature, more than any other time, has brought to our attention the plight of children, be they street children or not, who perform adult roles and who are in need of the basic components ...

Freakonomics-Expanded

...FREAKONOMICS A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything Revised and Expanded Edition Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner CONTENTS AN EXPLANATORY NOTE In which the origins of this book are clarified. vii PREFACE TO THE REVISED AND EXPANDED EDITION xi 1 INTRODUCTION: The Hidden Side of Everything In which the book’s central idea is set forth: namely, if morality represents how people would like the world to work, then economics shows how it actually does work. Why the conventional wisdom is so often wrong . . . How “experts”— from criminologists to real-estate agents to political scientists—bend the facts . . . Why knowing what to measure, and how to measure it, is the key to understanding modern life . . . What is “freakonomics,” anyway? 1. What Do Schoolteachers and Sumo Wrestlers Have in Common? 15 In which we explore the beauty of incentives, as well as their dark side—cheating. Contents Who cheats? Just about everyone . . . How cheaters cheat, and how to catch them . . . Stories from an Israeli day-care center . . . The sudden disappearance of seven million American children . . . Cheating schoolteachers in Chicago . . . Why cheating to lose is worse than cheating to win . . . Could sumo wrestling, the national sport of Japan, be corrupt? . . . What the Bagel Man saw: mankind may be more honest than we think. 2. How Is the Ku Klux Klan Like a Group of Real-Estate Agents? 49 In which it is argued that nothing is more powerful than information,...

...Social Change and Modernity Edited By Hans Haferkamp and Neil J. Smelser UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA PRESS Berkeley Los Angeles Oxford © 1992 The Regents of the University of California INTRODUCTION Hans Haferkamp and Neil J. Smelser Haferkamp is grateful to Angelika Schade for her fruitful comments and her helpful assistance in editing this volume and to Geoff Hunter for translating the first German version of parts of the Introduction; Smelser has profited from the research assistance and critical analyses given by Joppke. 1. Social Change and Modernity Those who organized the conference on which this volume is based—including the editors— decided to use the terms "social change" and "modernity" as the organizing concepts for this project. Because these terms enjoy wide usage in contemporary sociology and are general and inclusive, they seem preferable to more specific terms such as "evolution" "progress," "differentiation," or even "development," many of which evoke more specific mechanisms, processes, and directions of change. Likewise, we have excluded historically specific terms such as "late capitalism" and "industrial society" even though these concepts figure prominently in many of the contributions to this volume. The conference strategy called for a general statement of a metaframework for the study of social change within which a variety of more specific theories could be identified. 2. Theories of Social Change Change is such an evident feature of...
